Posted: 27 Jun 2016 05:32 PM PDT BEIJING (AP) — China is a potential winner if Britain and the European Union rework trade deals and look for investors after a British exit. Beijing faces a blow from weaker European demand for its exports and pressure to hold its yuan steady in turbulent currency markets. But economists and political analysts say if Britain and the EU split, both sides will look to cash-rich Chinese companies that are expanding abroad — with the possible bonus for Beijing of closer political ties. "One of the benefits China can gain from 'Brexit' is a stronger and closer economic relationship with the U.K. |

UNICEF finds dramatic inequality among world's poorest, richest children Posted: 27 Jun 2016 05:15 PM PDT By Sebastien Malo NEW YORK (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - The number of children who do not attend school is rising, child marriage has not dropped in decades and millions of young children will die mostly preventable deaths by 2030 if global poverty is not addressed, UNICEF said in a bleak report issued on Tuesday. Poor children are twice as likely as rich children to die before age 5, and poor girls are more than twice as likely to become child brides in signs of troubling inequality, said the annual report by the United Nations' children's agency. Noting some progress in halving global mortality rates for children under 5 since 1990 and boys and girls attending primary school in equal numbers in 129 countries, the report said such developments have been neither even nor fair, with repercussions for global turmoil. |
UK's Osborne rules himself out of race to succeed PM Cameron Posted: 27 Jun 2016 05:10 PM PDT By Andy Bruce LONDON (Reuters) - British finance minister George Osborne ruled himself out of the running to succeed Conservative Prime Minister David Cameron on Monday, citing his fierce advocacy of staying in the European Union. The government is under pressure to fill a vacuum left when Cameron announced he would resign by October after Britain ignored his advice and voted to leave the 28-member bloc in last week's referendum. "So it is clear that while I completely accept the result, I am not the person to provide the unity my party needs at this time." Before the referendum campaign, Osborne had been widely regarded as a candidate to succeed Cameron one day, boosted by one of the strongest expansions among major developed economies in the last few years. |
