Saudis see some progress toward political solution in Syria Posted: 25 Oct 2015 08:50 AM PDT Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir said on Sunday after talks with his counterpart in Cairo that wider international talks to find a political solution to the conflict in Syria had yielded some progress although further consultations were needed. Differences seem to be increasing between Saudi Arabia's position on Syria and that of Egypt, a close ally. Unlike Saudi Arabia, which backs some Syrian rebel groups, Egypt has welcomed Russian air strikes in Syria against insurgents. |
Britain's Blair says 2003 Iraq invasion played role in Islamic State rise Posted: 25 Oct 2015 06:20 AM PDT Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair acknowledged the 2003 invasion of Iraq played a part in the rise of the Islamic State militant group, and apologized for some mistakes in planning the war, in an interview broadcast on Sunday. Blair's decision to send troops to back the U.S.-led invasion is still a live political issue in Britain, where a six-year public inquiry into the conflict is yet to publish its findings. "Of course, you can't say that those of us who removed (former Iraqi dictator) Saddam (Hussein) in 2003 bear no responsibility for the situation in 2015," Blair told U.S. network CNN. |
Slovenia sees end to EU if leaders fail on migrant plan Posted: 25 Oct 2015 10:02 AM PDT By Robin Emmott and Ivana Sekularac BRUSSELS (Reuters) - The European Union faces collapse if the bloc cannot agree on a plan to confront the sudden influx of refugees through the Balkans, Slovenia's premier warned on Sunday as leaders bickered over who was to blame for the crisis. Nine days after Hungary's move to seal its southern border drove unprecedented migrant flows into tiny Slovenia, Prime Minister Miro Cerar sent out a dramatic call to fellow central and eastern leaders in Brussels for emergency talks. "If we don't find a solution today, if we don't do everything we can today, then it is the end of the European Union as such," Cerar said. |
Assad's priority to defeat 'terrorism' before elections: Russian lawmaker Posted: 25 Oct 2015 11:05 AM PDT By Alexander Winning and Tom Perry MOSCOW/BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's priority is to defeat "terrorists" before holding elections but he is ready to call parliamentary and presidential polls if necessary, a Russian lawmaker who met him on Sunday said. The remarks are a first indication of Assad's response to a call by his Russian allies for new presidential and parliamentary elections, as Moscow uses its clout with Damascus to try to end almost five years of conflict in Syria. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, whose country has launched air strikes against Assad's opponents in Syria, called for the elections in an interview broadcast on Saturday. |
Exclusive: UK nuclear deterrent to cost $256 billion, far more than expected Posted: 25 Oct 2015 12:30 PM PDT By Elizabeth Piper LONDON (Reuters) - The overall cost of replacing and maintaining Britain's nuclear deterrent will reach 167 billion pounds ($256 billion), much more than expected, according to a lawmaker's and Reuters' calculations based on official figures. The Scottish Nationalist Party, which wants Britain's Scotland-based nuclear-armed Trident submarines scrapped, called the sum "unthinkable and indefensible" at a time when deep cuts under the government's "austerity" policies mean "thousands of people across the UK are struggling to afford basics like food". Some military officials also oppose investment in Trident, saying the money would be better spent on maintaining the army and on more conventional technology, which have also faced cuts. |
Guatemala's Perez says Biden forced him to accept anti-corruption purge Posted: 25 Oct 2015 01:33 PM PDT By Sofia Menchu and Enrique Pretel GUATEMALA CITY (Reuters) - Guatemala's jailed former president, Otto Perez, says he regrets bowing to U.S. pressure to extend the work of an anti-corruption unit that then toppled him from power and that it was U.S. Vice President Joe Biden who forced his hand. Perez resigned and was arrested last month after Guatemala's attorney general and the U.N.-backed anti-corruption body accused him of leading a customs racket. In a series of meetings earlier this year, U.S. officials pressured Perez to fire corrupt officials and allow the International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala (CICIG) to continue its work, officials with direct knowledge of the talks have told Reuters. |
Eurosceptics claim victory in landmark Poland election Posted: 25 Oct 2015 03:42 PM PDT By Pawel Sobczak and Marcin Goettig WARSAW (Reuters) - Poland's eurosceptic Law and Justice party (PiS) claimed victory on Sunday in a watershed election that risks putting the ex-communist state on a collision course with key European Union allies. Run by Jaroslaw Kaczynski, the twin brother of Poland's late president Lech, PiS secured 39.1 percent of the vote, enough to govern alone and well ahead of the incumbent, staunchly pro-EU Civic Platform (PO) on 23.4 percent, said pollster Ipsos. If the exit poll is correct, the victory by PiS would be the biggest in terms of seats by a single party since Poland held free elections after shedding communism in 1989 -- marking a decisive swing to its brand of social conservativism mixed with left-leaning economics in the country of 38 million people. |

Argentina's Scioli leads election but opposition sees run-off Posted: 25 Oct 2015 04:48 PM PDT By Richard Lough and Hugh Bronstein BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) - Argentina's ruling party candidate Daniel Scioli had a wide lead in Sunday's presidential election, TV exit polls showed, but his main rival's party said it was sure Scioli would fall short of an outright win and have to face a run-off. Scioli promises he will make only gradual changes to outgoing leader Cristina Fernandez's brand of leftist populism while main pro-business opposition candidate Mauricio Macri talks of swiftly dismantling her protectionist controls to open up the ailing economy. "There will be a run-off according to our data based on exit polls," said Marcos Pena, Macri's chief campaign strategist. |
Greece agrees to new reception refugee capacity: EU's Juncker Posted: 25 Oct 2015 04:44 PM PDT Greece committed on Sunday to opening enough reception centers to house 30,000 refugees by the end of the year, with the United Nations to provide another 20,000 places, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said. |
Colombian capital veers right, elects mayor over security, transit Posted: 25 Oct 2015 04:42 PM PDT Colombians elected center-right Enrique Penalosa as mayor of the capital Bogota on Sunday, the nation's second most powerful position, in a vote that focused on transport chaos, security and how to put in place a peace accord with Marxist FARC rebels. Penalosa, 61, an independent who held the position back in 1998, will replace Gustavo Petro, a controversial leftist who once fought for the now-defunct rebel group known as M-19. "We will leave behind the hopelessness." The election, which also selected governors and regional mayors nationwide, is the first test of support for center-right President Juan Manual Santos, right-wing former President Alvaro Uribe, and the left since peace talks began three years ago. |

Poland's power twin and a coalminer's daughter Posted: 25 Oct 2015 04:00 PM PDT Poland's conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party, which won an outright majority in Sunday's general election according to an exit poll, is led by eurosceptic Jaroslaw Kaczynski, who has tapped Beata Szydlo, a relative unknown, for prime minister. JAROSLAW KACZYNSKI, 66, is the undisputed leader of PiS, which he co-founded with his identical twin brother Lech in 2001. A master of political intrigue since he played a behind-the-scenes role in the Solidarity trade union's dismantling of communism in Poland in 1989, Kaczynski is a fiery orator and a polarising figure. |

According to the IPSOS poll, PiS won 242 out of 460 seats in the parliament, the largest number a single party has ever secured since Poland overthrew communism in 1989, unseating the center-right Civic Platform after eight years. PiS said before the vote that it wanted the Polish central bank to launch a cheap lending program worth 350 billion zlotys ($90.72 billion), or 20 percent of the country's gross domestic product (GDP), over six years. |
