Posted: 14 May 2015 04:15 PM PDT

Obama welcomes Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Nayef as he plays host to leaders and delegations from the Gulf Cooperation Council countries at the White House in WashingtonBy Jeff Mason and Roberta Rampton CAMP DAVID, Md. (Reuters) - President Barack Obama vowed on Thursday to back Gulf allies against any "external attack," seeking to reassure them of Washington's iron-clad commitment to their security amid Arab anxiety over U.S.-led efforts to reach a nuclear deal with Iran. Hosting the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council for a rare summit at Camp David, Obama pledged that the United States would consider using military force to defend them and would also help address Iran's "destabilizing activities in the region." "I am reaffirming our iron-clad commitment to the security of our Gulf partners," Obama told a closing news conference at the presidential retreat in the Maryland mountains outside Washington.

U.S. House passes Iran nuclear review legislation

Senate Major leader McConnell heads to the Senate floor for a cloture vote on Capitol Hill in WashingtonBy Patricia Zengerle WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly on Thursday to pass legislation giving Congress the right to review, and possibly reject, an international nuclear agreement with Iran. The 400-25 vote sends the legislation to the White House, where administration officials have said President Barack Obama will sign it into law. The Iran Nuclear Review Act of 2015 passed the Senate last week after lawmakers reached a compromise removing some of its toughest provisions, and Obama dropped his threat to veto the measure as a threat to continuing negotiations between the United States and other world powers and Iran. The bill gives Congress 30 days to review a final nuclear deal after international negotiators reach such an agreement, and during that time bars Obama from temporarily waiving any U.S. sanctions on Iran that were passed by Congress.

Iran blasts Saudis over Yemen, agencies rush in aid

Fighters of the Popular Resistance Committees man a checkpoint in TaizBy Angus McDowall and Mohammed Mukhashef RIYADH/ANKARA/ADEN (Reuters) - A top member of Iran's parliament called Saudi Arabia's King Salman a traitor to Islam on Thursday, a sharp escalation in rhetoric over Riyadh's air strikes against an Iranian-allied militia that has seized much of neighboring Yemen. Although a five-day humanitarian truce was largely holding, and aid was getting to some of the millions of Yemenis deprived of food, fuel and medicine, tensions were also mounting over an Iranian relief ship, which Saudi Arabia insisted on inspecting. Yemen is the latest theater in Shi'ite Muslim Iran and Sunni Saudi Arabia's tussle for power across the Middle East, which has played out along largely sectarian lines but has not yet led to direct confrontation between the Gulf powers.

Emergency workers and Amtrak personnel inspect a derailed Amtrak train in Philadelphia, PennsylvaniaBy Jarrett Renshaw and Laila Kearney PHILADELPHIA/NEW YORK (Reuters) - A portrait of the engineer at the helm of a speeding Amtrak train that derailed in Philadelphia began to emerge on Thursday as the man's lawyer said his client could not remember the crash, and rescuers pulled an eighth body from the wreckage. With the engineer facing intense scrutiny over his role in the accident, Philadelphia police said they launched a criminal investigation into Tuesday's crash of the New York-bound train. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said the engineer, identified as Brandon Bostian, 32, fully engaged the train's emergency braking system seconds before the wreck. NTSB member Robert Sumwalt, updating reporters on the board's probe into the cause of the wreck, said the engineer has agreed to be interviewed by agency investigators, who were giving him a day or two to recuperate from his injuries first, and that he was entitled to be accompanied by his lawyer.

In its decision, the high court affirmed the Yukon government's purview to set admissions criteria at Emilie Tremblay School in Whitehorse, as long as they meet constitutional essentials. Canada's constitution obliges governments to fund French education for French Canadians living outside the French-speaking majority province of Quebec, but there are disagreements about who qualifies. The Yukon Francophone School Board's lawyers had argued that exceptions must be allowed, including for French-speaking immigrants, Canadians of French ancestry who were assimilated into the English-speaking mainstream and anglophones integrated into French-speaking communities.

Shell oil rig arrives in Seattle waters amid protests, permit controversy

The Shell Oil Company's drilling rig Polar Pioneer is shown in Port Angeles, WashingtoBy Victoria Cavaliere SEATTLE (Reuters) - The first of two Royal Dutch Shell drilling rigs slated for Arctic oil exploration arrived in Seattle on Thursday as environmental activists geared up for days of protests over plans to store the equipment at the city's port. Shell is planning to use Seattle as a base to store and maintain the rigs and other equipment as it resumes exploration and drilling this summer in the Chukchi Sea off Alaska, where it has not drilled since a mishap-filled 2012 season. The decision to resume drilling, and the port's decision to allow Shell to lease space in Seattle, has been met with anger by some city leaders and environmental activists who say drilling in the delicate Arctic ecosystem could lead to an ecological disaster. Activists constructed an approximately 20-foot-tall (6-meter) metal tripod at the entrance to Shell Oil's fuel transfer station in Seattle on Tuesday to try to block access to the rigs.
