Security Council resolutions, two U.S. officials said on Monday. Fox News earlier on Monday on its website cited Western intelligence sources as saying the test was held near Chabahar, a port city near Iran's border with Pakistan. All ballistic missile tests by Iran are banned under a 2010 Security Council resolution that remains valid until a nuclear deal between Iran and six world powers is implemented. |

Posted: 07 Dec 2015 04:19 PM PST BEIJING (AP) — Beijing issued its first-ever red alert for smog on Monday, urging schools to close and invoking restrictions on factories and traffic that will keep half of the city's vehicles off the roads. The red alert — the most serious warning on a four-tier system adopted a little over two years ago — means authorities have forecast more than three consecutive days of severe smog. An online notice from the Beijing Municipal Environmental Protection Bureau said it issued the alert to "protect public health and reduce levels of heavy air pollution." Beijing hotel staffer Fan Jinglong said the smog forecast was "really worrisome." "We have no choice but to step up preventative measures like wearing a mask outdoors at all times," he said. |

British review calls for urgent cuts to antibiotic use in livestock Posted: 07 Dec 2015 04:07 PM PST By Kate Kelland LONDON (Reuters) - Massive use of antibiotics in farming poses a critical threat to global public health and should be reduced dramatically to an internationally-agreed target, according to a British government-commissioned review. Agreeing and implementing a global target for agricultural antibiotic use won't be easy, the review, led by former Goldman Sachs chief economist Jim O'Neill, said, but is vital if life-saving medicines designed to fight bacterial infections are to be kept effective, both for animals and for people. The review suggested that following examples of Denmark and the Netherlands could make a swift, significant difference. |

Washington denies U.S.-led coalition hit Syria army camp Posted: 07 Dec 2015 03:21 PM PST By John Davison BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syria's government said a U.S.-led military coalition carried out a deadly air strike on a Syrian army camp, but coalition officials said the report was false. Syria said four coalition jets killed three of its soldiers and wounded 13 in the eastern province of Deir al-Zor on Sunday evening, calling it an act of aggression, the first time Damascus has made such an accusation. Any such strike by U.S.-led coalition planes, which have focused their fire on Islamic State targets, would further complicate the increasingly regional conflict. |
