U.S. considers air strikes on Iraq, holds talks with Iran

Volunteers, who have joined the Iraqi Army to fight against predominantly Sunni militants from the radical Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), gather with their weapons during a parade in Al-Fdhiliya districtBy Ziad al-Sanjary and Susan Heavey MOSUL Iraq/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama considered options for military action to support Iraq's besieged government on Monday, and U.S. and Iranian officials held talks to stabilize the region, which has been roiled by the advance of Sunni rebels toward Baghdad. Obama, who was being presented with recommendations from his top national security advisers on Monday evening, has made U.S. action contingent on Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki's taking steps to broaden his Shi'ite-dominated government. Militants from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant have routed Baghdad's army and seized the north of the country in the past week, threatening to dismember Iraq and unleash all-out sectarian warfare with no regard for national borders. The fighters have been joined by other armed Sunni groups that oppose what they say is oppression by Maliki.

Russia cuts off gas to Ukraine as Kiev orders border secured

Posted: 16 Jun 2014 12:12 PM PDT

Russia and Ukraine Locked in Gas WarBy Natalia Zinets and Vladimir Soldatkin KIEV/GORKI Russia (Reuters) - Russia cut off gas to Ukraine on Monday in a dispute over unpaid bills that could disrupt supplies to the rest of Europe and set back hopes for peace between the former Soviet neighbours. After the weekend loss of 49 troops when pro-Russian rebels shot down a military transport plane, Ukraine's new president ordered his forces to retake full control of their border with Russia - saying this could then pave the way for negotiations. Calling time on weeks of wrangling in talks over natural gas supplies, Russia said Kiev had missed a Monday morning deadline to repay $1.95 billion owed for previous purchases and announced Ukraine would now only get gas it has paid for in advance. At the same time, Moscow insisted that Ukraine must let Russian gas flow across the country through international pipelines to Russia's clients in the European Union - noting a temptation for Kiev to tap into those supplies in transit.

Planes are seen near a section of a damaged building at Jinnah International Airport, after Sunday's attack by Taliban militants, in KarachiBy Haji Mujtaba MIRANSHAH Pakistan (Reuters) - Pakistani fighter jets pounded North Waziristan on Monday, a day after the army announced the start of a full-scale drive to flush Islamist insurgents out of the volatile region bordering Afghanistan. In a long-awaited military operation precipitated by a deadly insurgent attack on Pakistan's biggest airport a week ago, Islamabad has deployed troops, artillery and helicopter gunships to fight insurgents in North Waziristan. The Taliban and their ethnic Uzbek allies holed up in North Waziristan have both claimed responsibility for the June 8 commando-style attack on Karachi airport, which was seen as a strategic turning point in how Pakistan tackles the insurgency. In a chilling message issued in response to the offensive, the Taliban said foreign firms operating in Pakistan would bear the brunt of their revenge.

Canada securities watchdog warns of medical marijuana scams

Workers tend to medical marijuana plants at a new commercial operation in Smiths Falls, Ontario on February 4, 2014Canada's securities watchdog warned Monday against dud medical marijuana investments, saying stock prices of several shell companies have soared after simply announcing their "intention" to grow and sell pot. The Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA) said in a statement it "is urging investors to be cautious when considering investing in medical marijuana stocks." "In many of these cases, just the announcement of intent to develop a medical marijuana business has resulted in an immediate rise in a company's stock price," the CSA said.

A Great White shark is pictured in the Eastern North Pacific in this undated handout photographBy Barbara Liston ORLANDO Fla. (Reuters) - A new look at research on great white sharks in the eastern north part of the Pacific Ocean indicates the population is likely growing rather than endangered, according to an international research team. "The good news is that white sharks are returning to levels of abundance," said George Burgess, director of the Florida Program for Shark Research, who led the new study published Monday in the journal PLOS ONE. The findings upend an impression of alarming low numbers left by a 2011 Stanford University study which led to petitions by conservationists to add white sharks to state and federal endangered lists, Burgess said. Stanford researcher Barbara Block said in an emailed statement to Reuters the data in the two studies is not inconsistent.

Governments in Iran and Iraq share concern over the ascendancy of militant Sunni rebels there. With time running short if a risky extension of the nuclear talks is to be avoided, negotiators face huge challenges to bridge gaps in positions over the future scope of Iran's nuclear programme in just five weeks.
