U.S. considers air strikes on Iraq, holds talks with Iran Posted: 16 Jun 2014 04:43 PM PDT By Ziad al-Sanjary and Susan Heavey MOSUL Iraq/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama considered options for military action to support Iraq's besieged government on Monday, and U.S. and Iranian officials held talks to stabilize the region, which has been roiled by the advance of Sunni rebels toward Baghdad. Obama, who was being presented with recommendations from his top national security advisers on Monday evening, has made U.S. action contingent on Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki's taking steps to broaden his Shi'ite-dominated government. Militants from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant have routed Baghdad's army and seized the north of the country in the past week, threatening to dismember Iraq and unleash all-out sectarian warfare with no regard for national borders. The fighters have been joined by other armed Sunni groups that oppose what they say is oppression by Maliki. |
Russia cuts off gas to Ukraine as Kiev orders border secured Posted: 16 Jun 2014 12:12 PM PDT By Natalia Zinets and Vladimir Soldatkin KIEV/GORKI Russia (Reuters) - Russia cut off gas to Ukraine on Monday in a dispute over unpaid bills that could disrupt supplies to the rest of Europe and set back hopes for peace between the former Soviet neighbours. After the weekend loss of 49 troops when pro-Russian rebels shot down a military transport plane, Ukraine's new president ordered his forces to retake full control of their border with Russia - saying this could then pave the way for negotiations. Calling time on weeks of wrangling in talks over natural gas supplies, Russia said Kiev had missed a Monday morning deadline to repay $1.95 billion owed for previous purchases and announced Ukraine would now only get gas it has paid for in advance. At the same time, Moscow insisted that Ukraine must let Russian gas flow across the country through international pipelines to Russia's clients in the European Union - noting a temptation for Kiev to tap into those supplies in transit. |
Exclusive: U.S., Iran discuss Iraq on sidelines of nuclear talks - sources Posted: 16 Jun 2014 03:41 PM PDT By Arshad Mohammed and Parisa Hafezi WASHINGTON/VIENNA (Reuters) - U.S. and Iranian officials discussed the crisis in Iraq on the sidelines of separate negotiations about the Iranian nuclear program in Vienna, three sources familiar with the matter said on Monday. Militants from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant have routed Baghdad's army and seized the north of the country in the past week, threatening to dismember Iraq and unleash all-out sectarian warfare with no regard for national borders. U.S. President Barack Obama will review his national security team's suggestions for how to deal with the crisis in Iraq, including possible actions, when he returns to Washington later on Monday, the White House said earlier. "The disastrous situation in Iraq was discussed today . |
Brazilian police arrest 14 in anti-World Cup protest Posted: 16 Jun 2014 04:05 PM PDT Brazilian police arrested 14 people on Monday during an anti-World Cup demonstration near the stadium where Nigeria and Iran played in southern Brazil, local security authorities said. In another demonstration in the northern city of Natal, protesters burned a U.S. flag a few hours before the United States' first World Cup match against Ghana. The small demonstration that was headed for the Estadio das Dunas where both teams are playing was dispersed by the police without any clashes, local media reported. Last year at a warm up tournament hundreds of thousands of Brazilians took to the streets to protest against corruption, poor public services and World Cup overspending. |
Pakistan jets strike insurgents in full-scale offensive Posted: 16 Jun 2014 09:40 AM PDT By Haji Mujtaba MIRANSHAH Pakistan (Reuters) - Pakistani fighter jets pounded North Waziristan on Monday, a day after the army announced the start of a full-scale drive to flush Islamist insurgents out of the volatile region bordering Afghanistan. In a long-awaited military operation precipitated by a deadly insurgent attack on Pakistan's biggest airport a week ago, Islamabad has deployed troops, artillery and helicopter gunships to fight insurgents in North Waziristan. The Taliban and their ethnic Uzbek allies holed up in North Waziristan have both claimed responsibility for the June 8 commando-style attack on Karachi airport, which was seen as a strategic turning point in how Pakistan tackles the insurgency. In a chilling message issued in response to the offensive, the Taliban said foreign firms operating in Pakistan would bear the brunt of their revenge. |
Obama tells Congress U.S. deploying up to 275 troops to Iraq Posted: 16 Jun 2014 03:42 PM PDT President Barack Obama told Congress on Monday the United States was deploying up to 275 military personnel to provide support and security for U.S. personnel and the country's embassy in Baghdad after militants seized control of the north of the country. "This force will remain in Iraq until the security situation becomes such that it is no longer needed." The president said he was notifying Congress under the War Powers Resolution. |

Tornadoes sweep through northeastern Nebraska Posted: 16 Jun 2014 04:47 PM PDT (Reuters) - Two large tornadoes swept farming areas of northeastern Nebraska on Monday, causing severe damage to at least one town and some injuries, according to officials and media reports. The tornadoes, part of a super-cell thunderstorm system, cut a swath across northeastern Nebraska, uprooting trees and leveling homes, officials said. The towns of Pilger and Stanton had suffered damage and emergency officials were searching for survivors, said Al Vacanti, city administrator for the nearby town of Wisner. "Pilger is totally destroyed. |
U.S. pressures Iraqi leader to curb sectarian governance Posted: 16 Jun 2014 04:43 PM PDT By Warren Strobel and Arshad Mohammed WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. security officials prepared on Monday to brief President Barack Obama on options to counter militants threatening Baghdad as Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki came under increased U.S. pressure to curb religious partisanship in his government. Obama notified Congress on Monday the United States was deploying up to 275 military personnel to provide support and security for U.S. personnel and the country's embassy in Baghdad after militants seized control of the north of the country. Brett McGurk, the State Department point man on Iraq, and U.S. Ambassador Stephen Beecroft met with Maliki in Baghdad on Monday as part of a U.S. effort to prod leaders of Iraq's Shi'ite-dominated administration to govern in a less sectarian manner, officials said. |
Canada securities watchdog warns of medical marijuana scams Posted: 16 Jun 2014 04:41 PM PDT Canada's securities watchdog warned Monday against dud medical marijuana investments, saying stock prices of several shell companies have soared after simply announcing their "intention" to grow and sell pot. This follows a new government scheme starting on April 1 that banned home cultivation of medical marijuana in favor of large commercial greenhouses in Canada. The Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA) said in a statement it "is urging investors to be cautious when considering investing in medical marijuana stocks." "In many of these cases, just the announcement of intent to develop a medical marijuana business has resulted in an immediate rise in a company's stock price," the CSA said. |
Researchers find great white shark population growing in Pacific Posted: 16 Jun 2014 04:36 PM PDT By Barbara Liston ORLANDO Fla. (Reuters) - A new look at research on great white sharks in the eastern north part of the Pacific Ocean indicates the population is likely growing rather than endangered, according to an international research team. "The good news is that white sharks are returning to levels of abundance," said George Burgess, director of the Florida Program for Shark Research, who led the new study published Monday in the journal PLOS ONE. The findings upend an impression of alarming low numbers left by a 2011 Stanford University study which led to petitions by conservationists to add white sharks to state and federal endangered lists, Burgess said. Stanford researcher Barbara Block said in an emailed statement to Reuters the data in the two studies is not inconsistent. |

Police fire rubber bullets in Brazil World Cup city Posted: 16 Jun 2014 04:27 PM PDT Curitiba (Brazil) (AFP) - Police fired rubber bullets and arrested 11 people Monday to break up anti-World Cup protesters who trashed banks and blocked traffic in the southeast Brazilian host city of Curitiba. About 200 protesters gathered in the city center and marched toward the stadium where Iran played Nigeria in a World Cup match, but were blocked by police, news website G1 reported. The protesters stopped a bus carrying fans to the stadium and blocked off several streets, setting garbage on fire to prevent cars from getting through, G1 said. The rally then broke up, but a small group of masked protesters returned to the city center and began storming banks until police fired rubber bullets to disperse them. |

About 275 US military personnel to Iraq, says Obama Posted: 16 Jun 2014 03:55 PM PDT About 275 US military personnel are being deployed to Iraq to help American personnel and protect the embassy in Baghdad, President Barack Obama said Monday in a letter to Congressional leaders. The force, which began deploying on Sunday, has been sent "for the purpose of protecting US citizens and property, if necessary, and is equipped for combat," Obama wrote. "This force will remain in Iraq until the security situation becomes such that it is no longer needed." The move comes as jihadists of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) battle Iraqi security forces for control of a strategic northern town and Washington weighs possible drone strikes against the militants. |

Iran and six powers seek to recover momentum for nuclear deal Posted: 16 Jun 2014 03:48 PM PDT By Justyna Pawlak and Fredrik Dahl VIENNA (Reuters) - Iran and six world powers will try in talks in Vienna this week to narrow differences and keep alive hopes of ending a decade-old nuclear dispute by late July, despite doubts the self-imposed deadline can be met. Ahead of Tuesday's start of formal talks, U.S. and Iranian officials separately discussed the fast-moving crisis in Iraq on Monday. Governments in Iran and Iraq share concern over the ascendancy of militant Sunni rebels there. With time running short if a risky extension of the nuclear talks is to be avoided, negotiators face huge challenges to bridge gaps in positions over the future scope of Iran's nuclear programme in just five weeks. |
U.S. official confirms talks with Iran about Iraq Posted: 16 Jun 2014 03:44 PM PDT The United States and Iran discussed Iraq briefly on Monday, a senior U.S. official confirmed, saying such talks would not include military coordination and would not make "strategic determinations" over the heads of Iraqis. "The issue did come up briefly with Iran on the margins of the P5+1 in Vienna today, separate from our trilateral meeting," the senior State Department official said, referring to talks between Iran and six major powers about Iran's nuclear program. U.S., Iranian and European Union officials held three-way talks on Monday but Iraq did not come up there, the official said. |

Two dead, 15 prisoners escape from Mali prison in gun battle Posted: 16 Jun 2014 03:35 PM PDT At least two people were killed and 15 prisoners escaped after a suspected Islamist militant detainee shot his way out of the main jail in Mali's capital Bamako on Monday, a government official said. Mid-afternoon gunfire shook downtown Bamako, underscoring lingering security fears in a country where French and U.N. troops have deployed to draw a line under a coup and the occupation of Mali's north by al Qaeda-linked Islamists two years ago. Boya Dembele, a senior justice ministry official, said 23 prisoners had initially escaped but eight were later recaptured. Dembele said the mass break out began when Mohamed Aly Ag Wadousene, a detainee accused of kidnapping and belonging to terrorist groups, took advantage of plumbers accessing cells to start shooting at guards. |
