Russian forces seize two Ukrainian bases in Crimea Posted: 19 Mar 2014 04:56 PM PDT By Aleksandar Vasovic and Maria Kiselyova SEVASTOPOL, Ukraine/MOSCOW (Reuters) - The United States warned Moscow it was on a "dark path" to isolation on Wednesday as Russian troops seized two Ukrainian naval bases, including a headquarters in the Crimean port of Sevastopol where they raised their flag. The dramatic seizure came as Russia and the West dug in for a long confrontation over Moscow's annexation of Crimea, with the United States and Europe groping for ways to increase pressure on a defiant Russian President Vladimir Putin. "As long as Russia continues on this dark path, they will face increasing political and economic isolation," said U.S. Vice President Joe Biden, referring to reports of armed attacks against Ukrainian military personnel in Crimea. |
U.S. examines pilot simulator data as Malaysia plane search falters Posted: 19 Mar 2014 02:45 PM PDT By Tim Hepher, A. Ananthalakshmi and Mark Hosenball KUALA LUMPUR/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The FBI is helping Malaysian authorities to analyze data from a flight simulator belonging to the captain of a missing Malaysian airliner, a U.S. official said on Wednesday as investigators grasped for clues 12 days after the plane vanished. Malaysia's police chief, Khalid Abu Bakar, said an examination of the simulator, taken from the home of pilot Zaharie Ahmad Shah, 53, showed its data log had been cleared on February 3, more than a month before the airliner, carrying 239 people, disappeared on a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing. |
Iran, six powers lock horns over nuclear reactor that could yield plutonium Posted: 19 Mar 2014 10:37 AM PDT By Fredrik Dahl and Parisa Hafezi VIENNA (Reuters) - Iran and world powers locked horns on Wednesday over the future of a planned Iranian nuclear reactor that could yield plutonium for bombs as the United States warned "hard work" will be needed to overcome differences when the sides reconvene in April. The meeting in Vienna was the second in a series that the six nations - the United States, China, Russia, Germany, France, Britain - hope will produce a verifiable settlement on the scope of Iran's nuclear program, ensuring it is oriented to peaceful ends only, and put to rest the risk of a new Middle East war. This week the two sides endeavored to iron out their positions on two of the thorniest issues: the level of uranium enrichment conducted in Iran, and its Arak heavy-water reactor that the West sees as a possible source of plutonium for bombs. However, Tehran's foreign minister voiced optimism that their July 20 deadline for a final agreement was within reach. |
Turkish president contradicts Erdogan, dismissing foreign plot Posted: 19 Mar 2014 01:26 PM PDT By Humeyra Pamuk ANKARA (Reuters) - President Abdullah Gul has dismissed suggestions that outside forces are conspiring against Turkey, openly contradicting Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan's assertions that a corruption scandal shaking the country is part of a foreign-backed plot. The graft inquiry swirling around Erdogan's government has grown into the biggest challenge of his 11-year-rule. "I don't accept allegations about foreign powers and I don't find them right ... I don't believe in these conspiracy theories as if there are some people trying to destroy Turkey," the Hurriyet newspaper quoted Gul as telling reporters during a visit to Denmark. "Of course Turkey has its long-standing opponents in the world. |
Two army officers, teenager killed in violence in Egypt Posted: 19 Mar 2014 01:19 PM PDT By Michael Georgy and Yasmine Saleh CAIRO (Reuters) - Ten people were killed in violence across Egypt on Wednesday, months ahead of a presidential vote meant to put Egypt back on a democratic path after last July's army takeover. In Qalubiya province, north of Cairo, two soldiers were killed in a shootout with Islamist militants, the Interior Ministry said, adding that six militants were killed and eight arrested in a raid on a weapons storage facility. A 13-year-old boy was shot dead in southern Egypt and one man was killed in Cairo, both in clashes between police and supporters of deposed elected President Mohamed Mursi of the Muslim Brotherhood, the health ministry said. |
Convicted Berlusconi relinquishes "Knight of Labour" title Posted: 19 Mar 2014 12:24 PM PDT Italy's four-time former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi on Wednesday relinquished the honorary "Knight of Labour" title that gave him his nickname of "il Cavaliere" in 1977 as he prepares to serve a one-year sentence for tax fraud. The 77-year-old media magnate "auto-suspended" himself from the Federation of Knights of Labour in a letter before a planned meeting of the directorate, the federation said. Since entering politics in 1994, Berlusconi was frequently referred to as simply "il Cavaliere" both in the media and by fellow politicians. On Tuesday, Italy's highest appeals court confirmed a two-year ban from public office for the center-right leader over a conviction for tax fraud in August in which he was handed a four-year prison sentence, commuted to one year. |
White House launches climate data website, more initiatives to come Posted: 19 Mar 2014 05:11 PM PDT By Jeff Mason WASHINGTON (Reuters) - In an effort to help Americans prepare for the effects of global warming, the White House on Wednesday unveiled a new initiative to make climate data widely available to citizens, companies and local governments. The move is part of President Barack Obama's Climate Action Plan, a broad strategy to meet U.S. commitments to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide that are blamed for heating the earth. Part of tackling climate change involves adapting to it, and the administration launched a website, climate.data.gov, to help people do that by gaining access to collated data from different government agencies. "These data will be crucial to helping communities plan for floods and other climate impacts," John Podesta, a senior adviser to the president, told reporters in a briefing. |

S.Africa's largest union marches for youth jobs Posted: 19 Mar 2014 04:51 PM PDT South Africa's 340,000-strong NUMSA union marched Wednesday to protest a new labour law it says will increase unemployment and poverty, amid a tense stand-off with the ruling ANC weeks before polls. Thousands of people striked and marched across the country in support of the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa, the largest worker organisation in the country, to demand more policies to fight poverty. NUMSA, which largely represents workers in the auto and metal sectors, is at odds with the African National Congress government over how to tackle youth joblessness. It takes exception especially to a law signed in December that provides tax incentives for companies to employ more young people, which the union says will discriminate against older workers. |

Kerry angered by Israeli minister's sharp criticism Posted: 19 Mar 2014 04:31 PM PDT In a rare move, Secretary of State John Kerry protested Wednesday to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about strong criticism of US foreign policy by his outspoken defense minister. In a telephone call, Kerry told Netanyahu the comments made by Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon were inconsistent with strong ties between Israel and the United States, State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said. "Clearly his comments were not constructive," Psaki told reporters, after Yaalon accused the US administration of showing weakness around the world, particularly on its policy with Iran and Ukraine. "Secretary Kerry spoke with Prime Minister Netanyahu this morning and protested to him his concerns about these comments," she said, adding that the United States has an "unshakeable commitment" to Israel's security. |
Brazil says floods driving thousands from homes Posted: 19 Mar 2014 04:30 PM PDT Brasília (AFP) - More than a month of flooding in northern Brazil has swollen rivers and driven thousands of people from their homes, authorities said Wednesday. Heavy rain in regions bordering Bolivia forced 22,000 households to leave their homes, including 3,000 families in the state of Rondonia after a tributary of the Amazon River burst its banks. Now it has risen above 19 meters," Colonel Denargli da Costa Farias of the Rondonia fire department told AFP. Predicting that the river would continue to rise through the end of the month, Da Costa Farias said the swift evacuation of residents in the worst-affected areas had ensured there were no fatalities. |

There was no mention of any Ukrainian requests for assistance in the brief statement about Hagel's conversation with Ukraine's acting defense minister, Ihor Tenyukh.
