Armed men, believed to be Russian servicemen, stand guard outside the naval headquarters in SevastopolBy Aleksandar Vasovic and Maria Kiselyova SEVASTOPOL, Ukraine/MOSCOW (Reuters) - The United States warned Moscow it was on a "dark path" to isolation on Wednesday as Russian troops seized two Ukrainian naval bases, including a headquarters in the Crimean port of Sevastopol where they raised their flag. The dramatic seizure came as Russia and the West dug in for a long confrontation over Moscow's annexation of Crimea, with the United States and Europe groping for ways to increase pressure on a defiant Russian President Vladimir Putin. Iran, six powers lock horns over nuclear reactor that could yield plutonium

European Union foreign policy chief Ashton and Iranian Foreign Minister Zarif smile at start of a conference in ViennaBy Fredrik Dahl and Parisa Hafezi VIENNA (Reuters) - Iran and world powers locked horns on Wednesday over the future of a planned Iranian nuclear reactor that could yield plutonium for bombs as the United States warned "hard work" will be needed to overcome differences when the sides reconvene in April. The meeting in Vienna was the second in a series that the six nations - the United States, China, Russia, Germany, France, Britain - hope will produce a verifiable settlement on the scope of Iran's nuclear program, ensuring it is oriented to peaceful ends only, and put to rest the risk of a new Middle East war. This week the two sides endeavored to iron out their positions on two of the thorniest issues: the level of uranium enrichment conducted in Iran, and its Arak heavy-water reactor that the West sees as a possible source of plutonium for bombs. However, Tehran's foreign minister voiced optimism that their July 20 deadline for a final agreement was within reach.

Leader of Forza Italia party Berlusconi talks to reporters at the end of the consultations with Italian Prime Minister-designate Renzi at the Parliament in RomeItaly's four-time former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi on Wednesday relinquished the honorary "Knight of Labour" title that gave him his nickname of "il Cavaliere" in 1977 as he prepares to serve a one-year sentence for tax fraud. The 77-year-old media magnate "auto-suspended" himself from the Federation of Knights of Labour in a letter before a planned meeting of the directorate, the federation said. By Jeff Mason WASHINGTON (Reuters) - In an effort to help Americans prepare for the effects of global warming, the White House on Wednesday unveiled a new initiative to make climate data widely available to citizens, companies and local governments. The move is part of President Barack Obama's Climate Action Plan, a broad strategy to meet U.S. commitments to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide that are blamed for heating the earth. Part of tackling climate change involves adapting to it, and the administration launched a website, climate.data.gov, to help people do that by gaining access to collated data from different government agencies. "These data will be crucial to helping communities plan for floods and other climate impacts," John Podesta, a senior adviser to the president, told reporters in a briefing.
