Centrist Democrats are back. But these are not your father’s Blue Dogs Posted: 04 Jun 2019 12:02 PM PDT When Mikie Sherrill first ran into the congressional Blue Dog coalition in 2018, she wasn't sure it would be the place for her. "I had some pause," Representative Sherrill says in a phone interview. What won her over was Stephanie Murphy, the Vietnam-born Florida lawmaker who came to Congress in 2017 and now serves as the first woman of color to co-chair the Blue Dogs. |
The Spanish king who set, then saved, democracy Posted: 04 Jun 2019 11:38 AM PDT With little fanfare and a short farewell letter, Spain's king emeritus, Juan Carlos I, officially retired from public life June 2. ‘My first mission was Normandy’: World War II pilots recall role in history Posted: 04 Jun 2019 11:37 AM PDT Capt. Peter Goutiere, now 104, and Ret. Lt. Col. Dave Hamilton, 96, are still standing straight, as if at attention, and almost giddy as they recount their first missions flying C-47 Dakotas, the twin-engine military transports they called "Daks" back then. "The C-47 was a luxury aeroplane, it had everything," Captain Goutiere says to me and a small group gathered at a hanger at Waterbury-Oxford Airport in Connecticut. |
Russian grassroots democracy? Park-goers rally against church land grabs. Posted: 04 Jun 2019 10:20 AM PDT On a recent Sunday in Torfyanka Park, in a densely populated suburb near the northern edge of Moscow, a familiar ritual of confrontation is taking place. Dozens of people have gathered at a fenced compound that houses a 24-hour guard station and a large wooden cross, erected by the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC). Rather, they are here to protest that the compound is on the park grounds at all. |
