Finding humanity in dangerous places – a reporter's story Posted: 06 Jun 2019 01:45 PM PDT Dominique Soguel, who reports for the Monitor from her current base in Basel, Switzerland, is one of those journalists who possesses the knack and the energy to find people and organizations who can spark hope. Dominique, who is now also the mother of a toddler, has spent much of her career covering Syria, Northern Iraq, Turkey, and Libya. Reflecting on Dominique's work, Ken Kaplan, the Monitor's editor for Middle East coverage, said "illustrating and explaining the human condition is a hallmark of all of Dominique's work, perhaps nowhere more so than in Syria. |

It was a symbol, he said, of his growing "close personal friendship" with Vladimir Putin. The charismatic and uniquely Chinese creatures are already wowing Muscovites, who have not had the chance to see a panda up close since Mao Zedong gave one to Nikita Khrushchev back in the 1950s, to cement a similar moment of intense rapprochement between the two Asian giants. |

An ex-Marine who served four combat tours in Iraq, Representative Moulton of Massachusetts has tried to stand out in the crowded field of Democratic presidential candidates by emphasizing military and foreign-policy issues. "I think we have a historic opportunity to reclaim the mantle of leadership on national security," he says between campaign stops in New Hampshire in which he calls for Democrats to quit ceding patriotism to Republicans. |
