East Ukraine city largely calm after battle, rebels seek Russian help Posted: 28 May 2014 11:36 AM PDT By Gabriela Baczynska DONETSK Ukraine (Reuters) - Relative calm returned to the streets of Donetsk on Wednesday after the biggest battle of the pro-Russian separatist uprising in eastern Ukraine, a conflict transformed by the landslide election of a pro-European leader who vowed to crush the revolt. However, this appeared minor compared with on Monday and Tuesday when government forces killed dozens of rebel fighters in an assault to retake Donetsk International Airport, which the rebels had seized the morning after Ukrainians overwhelmingly elected Petro Poroshenko as president. On Wednesday their leader Denis Pushilin appealed again for Russia's help. "The residents of the Donetsk People's Republic are on the verge of a humanitarian catastrophe," he said. |
Obama fights foreign policy critics, pledges aid to Syria groups Posted: 28 May 2014 03:58 PM PDT By Steve Holland WEST POINT, N.Y., Reuters) - President Barack Obama fought back against critics of his foreign policy on Wednesday by insisting U.S. reliance on diplomacy over military intervention was working to resolve global crises like Ukraine and Iran, and he pledged to ramp up support for Syria's opposition. In the commencement address at the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, Obama laid out his approach to foreign affairs for the rest of his presidency built on a commitment to act in concert with other nations, and he shifted the fight against terrorism from Afghanistan to more diffuse threats globally. Obama, stung by unrelenting criticism that he has been passive and indecisive as a world leader, spent a large section of his address countering Republicans in Congress and foreign policy experts in Washington who argue for a more aggressive approach to crises from Ukraine to Syria. |
Egypt's Sisi heads for big win in early provisional count Posted: 28 May 2014 03:31 PM PDT By Yasmine Saleh and Michael Georgy CAIRO (Reuters) - Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, the former army chief who toppled Egypt's first freely elected leader, was on course for a sweeping victory in the country's presidential election on Wednesday, early provisional results showed. But a lower than expected turnout figure raised questions about Sisi's credibility after his supporters had idolized him as a hero who can deliver political and economic stability. Sisi captured 92.2 percent of votes cast in more than 50 percent of polling stations, judicial sources said. His only rival, leftist politician Hamdeen Sabahi, gained 3.2 percent while 4.6 percent of votes were declared void. |
At least 54 killed in Iraqi violence Posted: 28 May 2014 03:52 PM PDT Violence rocked Iraq on Wednesday as at least 54 people died in car bombings, suicide attacks and assassinations around the country. The bloodshed hit mostly Shi'ite sections of Baghdad and the troubled northern city of Mosul, where an al Qaeda breakaway faction, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), holds sway. The bombings and killings were a reminder in the month since national elections were held that the pace of bloodshed has shown no signs of diminishing In one attack in Baghdad's Sadr City, a minivan pulled into a line of taxis and the driver abandoned the vehicle minutes before it exploded, police said. Four people were killed and 14 were wounded, police and medical sources said. |
U.S. Navy official says 'pings' unlikely from missing Malaysia jet: CNN Posted: 28 May 2014 04:50 PM PDT A U.S. Navy official said four acoustic pings at the center of the search for missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370, which disappeared in March, are no longer believed to be from the aircraft's black boxes, according to a report by CNN. Australian search authorities narrowed the search for the missing jet last month after picking up a series of pings near where analysis of satellite data put the last location of the Boeing 777, some 1,600 km off Australia's northwest coast. CNN said authorities now almost universally believe the pings did not come from the onboard data or cockpit voice recorders, but instead came from some other man-made source unrelated to the jetliner that disappeared on March 8, according to Michael Dean, the U.S. Navy's deputy director of ocean engineering. "Our best theory at this point is that (the pings were) likely some sound produced by the ship ... or within the electronics of the Towed Pinger Locator," Dean said. |
Japan & Australia consider submarine deal that could rattle China Posted: 28 May 2014 02:12 PM PDT By Tim Kelly and Matt Siegel TOKYO/SYDNEY (Reuters) - Japan will get the chance to pursue an unprecedented military export deal when its defense and foreign ministers meet their Australian counterparts in Tokyo next month. Japan is considering selling submarine technology to Australia – perhaps even a fleet of fully engineered, stealthy vessels, according to Japanese officials. Any agreement would take months to negotiate and remains far from certain, but even a deal for Japan to supply technology would likely run to billions of dollars and represent a major portion of Australia's overall $37 billion submarine program. Experts say a Japan-Australia deal would send a signal to Asia's emerging superpower of Japan's willingness, under nationalist Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, to export arms to a region wary of China's growing naval strength, especially its pursuit of territorial claims in the East and South China seas. |

UN Security Council urges Mali to implement ceasefire Posted: 28 May 2014 04:54 PM PDT United Nations (United States) (AFP) - The UN Security Council urged Mali Wednesday to implement fully a ceasefire between the government and armed rebel groups following fresh fighting in the northern desert town of Kidal. Members "urged signatories to implement the ceasefire fully" and reiterated their "full support" in contributing towards the stabilization of Mali and the launching of peace talks. The Mali presidency earlier Wednesday appointed a retired air force colonel as defense minister after the predecessor resigned over last week's deadly rebel takeover of Kidal. Armed groups including the Tuareg separatist National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad (MNLA) humiliated the army in a deadly offensive across the northern desert. |

Acoustic pings at heart of MH370 hunt 'not likely from black box' Posted: 28 May 2014 04:37 PM PDT Four acoustic transmissions that have been the focus of the search for missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 are no longer believed to have come from the plane's black box, a US navy official said Thursday. The Navy's deputy director of ocean engineering Michael Dean told CNN there was now broad agreement that they came from some other man-made source unrelated to the jet that disappeared on March 8 carrying 239 people. He said it was not possible to absolutely exclude that the pings came from the black boxes, but there was no evidence now to suggest they did. A series of signals it picked up promoted Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott to say he was "very confident" they were from the black box from the plane that vanished en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing. |

Egypt's Sisi wins overwhelming majority: early poll count Posted: 28 May 2014 04:21 PM PDT Egypt's ex-army chief Abdel Fattah al-Sisi was headed on Thursday for an overwhelming victory in a presidential election touted as a plebiscite on his ouster of the elected Islamist leader last year. With almost 15 percent of polling stations accounted for, the retired field marshal led with about 93 percent of votes cast over the three-day election, trouncing his sole rival Hamdeen Sabbahi. The outcome had never been in doubt, with Sisi riding on a wave of support for a potential strongman who can restore stability after several years of tumult. But the army-installed government and Sisi were eyeing a large turn out as an endorsement of the overthrow of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi last July, and the subsequent crackdown on his supporters. |

Glazer death met with subdued response in Manchester Posted: 28 May 2014 03:48 PM PDT London (United Kingdom) (AFP) - Manchester United fans on Wednesday paid muted respect to owner Malcolm Glazer, who has died aged 85, as deep resentment still lingers over his debt-ladened takeover. Disgruntled supporters even set up a new club, called F.C. United of Manchester. A popular chant heard at F.C. United games looked forward to Glazer's passing, and although attitudes softened as the Premier League giant enjoyed one of its most succesful spells, supporters remain angry about the club's finances. Manchester United Supporters' Trust vice-chair Sean Bones said: "It would be inappropriate for me to make any comment about the death of Malcolm Glazer as I didn't know him or his family personally. |

BP asks U.S. Supreme Court justice to block Gulf spill payments Posted: 28 May 2014 03:38 PM PDT By Lawrence Hurley WASHINGTON (Reuters) - BP Plc on Wednesday asked Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia to allow the company to avoid making payments to businesses demanding compensation for the 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill while litigation continues. The company acted after the New Orleans-based 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals lifted an injunction earlier in the day that had prevented payments being made. Last week, the court had decided not to revisit a decision rejecting BP's bid to block payments to businesses that could not trace their economic losses to the disaster. In the new court filing, BP's lawyers say that if the payments are not blocked, "countless awards totaling potentially hundreds of millions of dollars will be irreparably scattered to claimants that suffered no injury traceable to BP's conduct." The appeals court in March voted 2-1 to authorize payments on so-called business economic loss claims, and said the injunction preventing payments should be lifted. |

U.S. industry gears up to fight Obama's climate rules Posted: 28 May 2014 03:28 PM PDT The Environmental Protection Agency is expected to propose on Monday new rules to crack down on power plant emissions as part of President Barack Obama's efforts to combat climate change. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce released a report on Wednesday that predicted the regulations would cost consumers $289 billion more for electricity through 2030 and crimp the economy by $50 billion a year. The EPA called the report "nothing more than irresponsible speculation" and said it was based on unfounded assumptions about future requirements for natural gas plants. "The chamber is using the same tired play from the same special interest playbook that is engineered to continue polluting and stall progress," EPA spokesman Tom Reynolds said in a statement. |
