Policy differences over the negotiations with Iran remained firm, however, as Netanyahu set off for the United States to deliver the speech, which has imperiled ties between the two allies. Israel fears that U.S. President Barack Obama's Iran diplomacy, with an end-of-March deadline for a framework accord, will allow its arch foe to develop atomic weapons -- something Tehran denies seeking.

More than 30 arrested as Hong Kong anti-China protesters scuffle with police

A protester is detained by a policeman during a demonstration against mainland traders, at Yuen Long district near the border with mainland China in Hong KongMore than 30 people were arrested as a group of about 400 demonstrators in Hong Kong clashed with police in the latest sign of tensions caused by China's influence in the city. Protesters in Yuen Long, in Hong Kong's New Territories just a stone's throw from mainland China, chanted to "cancel the multiple-entry permit" and "topple the Chinese Communist Party" as they complained about so-called parallel traders, who buy goods in Hong Kong to sell at a profit across the border. Early on Monday, a police spokeswoman said a total of 36 people aged 13 to 74 had been arrested for offences including possessing offensive weapons, assault, disorder, and fighting. The demonstration mirrored others in recent weeks targeting mainland Chinese visitors that have tapped a seam of resentment against China, resulting in calls for greater Hong Kong nationalism and even independence from China, nearly three months after police cleared away the last of pro-democracy street protests in the city.

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — The yearlong search for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 has turned up no sign of the plane, but that doesn't mean it's been unproductive. It has yielded lessons and discoveries that could benefit millions, including coastal Australians, air and sea travelers and scientists trying to understand ancient changes to the earth's crust. The knowledge gained so far is of little comfort to family and friends of the 239 people still missing from the plane, which vanished last March 8 during a flight from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to Beijing. While finding the plane remains the top priority for searchers and investigators, what they're learning along the way may prove valuable long after the search ends.

Rockets hit residential areas in Libya's Benghazi on Sunday, killing at least two people and wounding more than 30 others in continued fighting over the city, officials said. Nearly four years after the fall of Muammar Gaddafi, Libya is caught up in a conflict between two rival governments, one internationally recognized and the other controlling Tripoli since its fighters took over the capital in the summer. The conflict involves loose confederations of rebel brigades who once battled Gaddafi, and Benghazi is a battle between a former Libyan general who declared war on Islamist militants, and an alliance of militants and former rebel fighters. Libyan military official Fadil Hassi said two people were killed and 30 wounded when at least two rockets hit downtown Benghazi.

Israeli official sees U.S. Congress as 'last brake' to stop Iran deal

Posted: 01 Mar 2015 03:24 PM PST

The U.S. Congress could be "the last brake" for stopping a nuclear deal with Iran, a senior Israeli official said on Sunday as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu arrived in the United States for a speech this week that has strained U.S.-Israeli relations. The official, who declined to be identified, told reporters on Netanyahu's plane that the prime minister in his address to Congress on Tuesday would give a detailed explanation of his objections to a deal with Iran. "In my opinion, Congress could be the last brake for stopping the deal - including if it is to happen on March 24," the official said, adding it was Israel's impression that members of Congress "do not necessarily know the details of the deal coming together, which we do not see as a good deal." Israel fears that President Barack Obama's Iran diplomacy, with an end-of-March deadline for a framework accord with six countries including the United States, will allow its archfoe to develop atomic weapons, something Tehran denies seeking.
