Saudis end air campaign in Yemen, seek political solution Posted: 21 Apr 2015 04:03 PM PDT By Noah Browning DUBAI (Reuters) - Saudi Arabia announced on Tuesday it was ending a month-long campaign of air strikes against the Houthi rebels who seized large areas of Yemen and said it would back a political solution to bring peace to its war-ravaged neighbor. "Operation Decisive Storm has achieved its goals...(including) removing the threat to Saudi Arabia and neighboring countries, especially in terms of heavy weapons," said a statement carried by Saudi state news agency SPA. It would combine political, diplomatic and military action but would focus on "the political process that will lead to a stable and secure future for Yemen." Saudi spokesman Brigadier General Ahmed Asseri said the alliance may still target Houthis. "The coalition will continue to prevent the Houthi militias from moving or undertaking any operations inside Yemen," he told reporters in Riyadh. |
Former Egyptian president Mursi jailed for 20 years Posted: 21 Apr 2015 12:59 PM PDT By Mahmoud Mourad CAIRO (Reuters) - Muslim Brotherhood leader Mohamed Mursi was sentenced to 20 years in prison without parole on Tuesday on charges arising from the killing of protesters, nearly three years after he became Egypt's first freely elected president. Mursi stood in a cage in court as judge Ahmed Sabry Youssef read out the ruling against him and 12 other Brotherhood members, including senior figures Mohamed el-Beltagy and Essam el-Erian. The United States expressed "concern" about the verdict but did not indicate that it would affect diplomatic relations with Egypt, a strategic U.S. ally in the Middle East. "Mr. Mursi, like all other defendants, must be afforded the basic legal right of due process. |
Italian prosecutors blame captain for collision in migrant shipwreck Posted: 21 Apr 2015 01:23 PM PDT By James Mackenzie CATANIA, Italy (Reuters) - Italian prosecutors blamed the captain of a grossly overloaded fishing boat for a collision which capsized and sank his vessel off Libya, drowning hundreds of migrants including many women and children locked below deck. The few survivors of Sunday's tragedy told investigators how the African and Bangladeshi migrants, among hundreds of thousands trying to escape war and poverty, had waited up to a month in Libya before the boat set sail for Europe. Only 28 survivors have been brought to Italy from the hundreds of people on board the fishing boat. |
U.S. senators call for humanitarian safe zones in Syria Posted: 21 Apr 2015 03:25 PM PDT Republican and Democratic U.S. senators called on President Barack Obama on Tuesday to create and enforce humanitarian safe zones in Syria, amid international concerns about the dire conditions faced by millions of people displaced by the war. "The staggering human displacement, killing and destruction are an affront to the civilized world and must be stopped," Republican Senators John McCain and Lindsey Graham and Democrats Richard Durbin and Tim Kaine wrote to Obama in a letter seen by Reuters. The four-year-long war in Syria has killed more than 220,000 people and displaced millions of others. The lawmakers urged Obama to establish one or more safe zones, with "necessary enforcement mechanisms" including air assets, and securing of the border area by Turkey. |

New law to allow Japan to supply U.S. military in South China Sea, say officials Posted: 21 Apr 2015 02:24 PM PDT By Nobuhiro Kubo and Tim Kelly TOKYO (Reuters) - Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's plans to expand Japan's non-combat role in armed conflicts beyond "areas around Japan" could see Tokyo becoming dragged into action in the South China Sea in support of U.S. forces, government and ruling party sources say. Abe will send legislation to parliament next month - with the backing of his coalition partners virtually assuring its passage - allowing Japan to ship fuel and ammunition to American units anywhere, should Tokyo judge its national security to be at stake. Japan and the United States have no territorial claims in the energy-rich South China Sea, but tensions are rising between China and Philippines in the strategic waterway, where some $5 trillion in ship-borne trade passes every year, much of it heading to and from Japanese ports. |
Chemical mishap killed hundreds of fish as Texas state aquarium Posted: 21 Apr 2015 04:58 PM PDT By Jim Forsyth SAN ANTONIO (Reuters) - Hundreds of fish were killed at the Texas State Aquarium in Corpus Christi after an industrial chemical was mistakenly introduced to a huge tank instead of a drug commonly used to kill worms and lice in fish, the aquarium said on Tuesday. About 13 percent of its entire collection was killed, including a sand tiger shark and hundreds of fish in its 125,000-gallon (473,000-liter) Islands of Steel and 40,000-gallon (151,000-liter) Flower Gardens exhibits, the aquarium said. Aquarium President Tom Schmid said fish began dying after employees introduced what they thought was a low dose of a drug used to kill parasites in fish. |

Britain considers aiding Mediterranean migrant rescues Posted: 21 Apr 2015 04:45 PM PDT Britain said it was considering ways to help Europe's refugee crisis on Tuesday following the Mediterranean's worst migrant disaster. Foreign Minister Philip Hammond told the BBC he wanted a "more formidable operation on the sea", while Prime Minister David Cameron said he wanted to prevent migrants travelling and "stop this cargo of death". The Ministry of Defence was understood to be considering options on how to help with the crisis at sea, said a source close to the matter speaking on condition of anonymity. "We've got one of the strongest and best-organised aid budgets anywhere in Europe and we can help stabilise some of these countries," Cameron told BBC radio. |

Top Asian News at 11:30 p.m. GMT Posted: 21 Apr 2015 04:32 PM PDT WASHINGTON (AP) — North Korea should learn from the emerging nuclear deal with Iran that Washington is willing to engage its adversaries if it has a "credible" partner to negotiate with, a senior U.S. official said Tuesday. Sydney Seiler, U.S. envoy to long-stalled six-nation talks on North Korea's nuclear weapons program, also cited Cuba and Myanmar as having "responded to our offer to reach out a hand to those who would unclench their fist." |

Sage-grouse in California, Nevada excluded from federal protection Posted: 21 Apr 2015 04:26 PM PDT The U.S. government denied protection on Tuesday to a type of prairie bird found in Nevada and California in a victory for mining and ranching groups who feared sage-grouse protections could restrict their livelihoods. Federal officials said the move to exempt the so-called bi-state population of greater sage grouse from Endangered Species Act protection comes as the federal government considers whether to impose measures to protect a broader species of the bird that lives in nearly a dozen U.S. states. The U.S. Department of the Interior said a key factor in Tuesday's decision was a $45 million conservation plan developed by federal and state officials and others to ensure the health of the animal. It has sound science behind it, that's the only way we can make these decisions" U.S. Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell said at an event in Reno, Nevada, where she was joined by Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval, a Republican. |
Oklahoma scientists say earthquakes linked to oil and gas work Posted: 21 Apr 2015 04:26 PM PDT Oklahoma geologists have documented strong links between increased seismic activity in the state and the injection into the ground of wastewater from oil and gas production, a state agency said on Tuesday. Oklahoma is recording 2-1/2 earthquakes daily of a magnitude 3 or greater, a seismicity rate 600 times greater than observed before 2008, the report by the Oklahoma Geological Survey (OGS) said. It is "very likely that the majority of the earthquakes" are triggered by wastewater injection activities tied to the oil and gas industry, the OGS said. Prior to 2008, Oklahoma averaged less than two a year. |
Obama: U.S. warned Iran about shipping weapons to Yemen - MSNBC Posted: 21 Apr 2015 04:21 PM PDT President Barack Obama said on Tuesday the United States government has warned Iran against delivering weapons to Yemen that could be used to threaten shipping traffic in the region. "We've been actually very straightforward to them," Obama said in a televised interview on MSNBC's "Hardball." "What we've said to them is that 'if there are weapons delivered to factions within Yemen that could threaten navigation, that's a problem.' And we're not sending them obscure messages - we send them very direct messages about it," Obama said. |
Super storm lashes Australian east coast for third day Posted: 21 Apr 2015 04:14 PM PDT By Jane Wardell SYDNEY (Reuters) - A cyclonic storm lashed Australia's east coast for a third day on Wednesday, causing millions of dollars of damage to property and infrastructure in Sydney and other cities. Three people have been killed in the wild weather, which has washed away houses, cut power to more than 200,000 homes and stranded a cruise ship off the coast in mountainous seas. The Bureau of Meteorology warned that a second storm cell was gathering off the coast north of Sydney, with gale force winds of up to 100 km per hour (62 miles per hour) and heavy winds lashing the coast. The storm caused havoc in Sydney, felling trees, downing power lines and knocking out traffic lights. |

British PM pressured over food bank rise Posted: 21 Apr 2015 03:59 PM PDT Britain's opposition centre-left Labour party on Tuesday urged Prime Minister David Cameron to promise to reduce reliance on free food bank supplies by people in economic trouble. Soaring use of food banks and a squeeze on living standards have emerged as a central theme in the election campaign ahead of the vote on May 7. The largest food bank network in Britain, The Trussell Trust, will report on Wednesday that food bank users rose to over a million last year, according to newspaper The Independent. The rise follows years of steep increases in reliance on free food handouts, from 130,000 people in 2011-2012 to 913,000 in 2013-2014. |

2015 may be the year Cyprus is reunified, say Turkey, US Posted: 21 Apr 2015 03:48 PM PDT Turkey and the United States voiced hopes Tuesday that 2015 could be the year when a long-elusive diplomatic solution is finally found to the decades-old division of Cyprus. "This is a problem that just has gone on for far too long, and it is begging for international efforts to try to help bring about a resolution, a lasting settlement," US Secretary of State John Kerry said as he met with his Turkish counterpart. Greek and Turkish Cypriots have sought for more than four decades to resolve their split, with about 1,000 peacekeepers monitoring a ceasefire line that cuts through the heart of Nicosia, Europe's last divided capital. "The United States and Turkey both support the UN-led negotiations to reunify the island as a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation," Kerry said. |
South Africa deploys army to quell anti-immigrant attacks Posted: 21 Apr 2015 03:47 PM PDT South African soldiers deployed overnight Tuesday to tackle gangs hunting down and killing foreigners after at least seven people died in a wave of anti-immigrant violence, AFP photographers witnessed. Dozens of military police surrounded a downtown Johannesburg hostel housing mainly South Africans which police raided as a helicopter hovered above. In recent days police in the economic capital Johannesburg and in the port city of Durban have struggled to contain mobs targeting migrants from Zimbabwe, Malawi, Mozambique and other African countries over the past three weeks. The spate of attacks has revived memories of xenophobic bloodshed in 2008, when 62 people were killed in Johannesburg's townships, tarnishing South Africa's post-apartheid image as a "rainbow nation" of diverse groups living in harmony. |
White house says welcomes end of Saudi-led air campaign in Yemen Posted: 21 Apr 2015 03:32 PM PDT The White house said on Tuesday it welcomed Saudi Arabia's announcement that it would end air strikes against Houthi rebels in Yemen and back political peace talks. Samuels holds firm in 100th innings to steady WIndies ship Posted: 21 Apr 2015 03:31 PM PDT St. George's (Grenada) (AFP) - Marlon Samuels averted a complete West Indies batting collapse with a classy, unbeaten 94 to lift the home side to 188 for five at stumps on a rain-affected first day of the second Test against England at the National Cricket Stadium in Grenada on Tuesday. Playing the 100th Test innings of a career spanning more than 14 years, the elegant 34-year-old right-hander dominated a protracted final session to the extent that his unbroken 59-run sixth-wicket partnership with Denesh Ramdin has seen the captain contributing just six runs. Samuels, who came to the crease before lunch with the West Indies unsteady after two early setbacks, never looked troubled throughout his time in the middle and maintained his excellent record against the English with an innings that was watchful for the most part before he launched into a series of extravagant strokes on Ramdin's arrival at the wicket. He averages 69.00 in six previous Tests against England. |

Families mourn Mali desert crash victims as military stand by Posted: 21 Apr 2015 03:25 PM PDT Relatives of 116 people killed in an Air Algerie crash in July visited the scene of the disaster in remote hazardous northern Mali on Tuesday under tight military guard. The McDonnell Douglas 83 jet took off on July 24 from Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso bound for Algiers, but crashed after its pilots asked to turn back as bad weather struck. "I lost my entire family," Carine Renault sobbed, breaking down in grief as she reached the memorial stone, set a few hundred yards (metres) from the crash site where twisted black debris remains visible. Along with almost 300 people she was flown from Ouagadougou in Burkina to Gao in Mali in a French troop transport plane, then ferried to the crash site by helicopter. |

In North Korea, solar panel boom gives power to the people Posted: 21 Apr 2015 03:09 PM PDT By James Pearson SEOUL (Reuters) - In a country notorious for a lack of electricity, many North Koreans are taking power into their hands by installing cheap household solar panels to charge mobile phones and light up their homes. Apartment blocks in Pyongyang and other cities are increasingly adorned with the panels, hung from balconies and windows, according to recent visitors to the isolated country and photographs obtained by Reuters. "There must be at least a threefold increase in solar panels compared to last year," Simon Cockerell, who visits North Korea regularly as general manager of Beijing-based Koryo Tours, told Reuters from Pyongyang. "Some are domestically made, so that may have driven prices down." North Korea has long suffered from electricity shortages which plunge large parts of the country into darkness, providing a stark contrast in night-time photos taken from space to prosperous and power-thirsty South Korea. |

Honeymoon over for Indonesian leader as U-turns erode authority Posted: 21 Apr 2015 03:03 PM PDT By Kanupriya Kapoor DENPASAR, Indonesia (Reuters) - When Indonesian President Joko Widodo wanted to push this year's budget through the opposition-dominated parliament, he left it to his advisers to hash out a deal with lawmakers. His meteoric rise from furniture businessman to president of the world's third-largest democracy, and the first to come from outside the political or military establishment, was widely seen as a watershed moment for Indonesia. His strained relationship with the powerful head of his political party, former president Megawati Sukarnoputri, further complicates his job. |
