South China Sea ruling will 'intensify conflict': Chinese envoy Posted: 12 Jul 2016 05:22 PM PDT By David Brunnstrom and Ben Blanchard WASHINGTON/BEIJING (Reuters) - An international tribunal's ruling denying China's claims in the South China Sea will "intensify conflict and even confrontation," Beijing's ambassador to the United States said on Tuesday. The ambassador, Cui Tiankai, also told an international forum in Washington that Beijing remains committed to negotiations with other parties in disputes over the vital trade route. ... |
25 killed, 50 injured as trains collide in Italy Posted: 12 Jul 2016 01:16 PM PDT By Vincenzo Damiani BARI, Italy (Reuters) - At least 25 people died and dozens were injured on Tuesday when two passenger trains collided head-on at high speed in southern Italy, sending debris flying into surrounding olive groves. There was no immediate indication of what had caused one of Italy's worst train disasters in recent years, but the government promised a full and swift investigation. |
Iraqi forces link up south of Mosul, tightening noose around Islamic State Posted: 12 Jul 2016 03:20 PM PDT Iraqi government forces advancing on the Islamic State-held city of Mosul retook a village from IS on Tuesday and linked up along the Tigris river with army units pushing from a separate direction, Defence Minister Khalid al-Obeidi said. The territorial gain, which followed the recapture of a key air base nearby at the weekend, further isolated Mosul in preparation for a government assault to recover Iraq's second largest city 60 km (40 miles) to the north. "Forces from the 9th Armoured Division and the counter-terrorism service liberated Ajhala village north of Qayara base," Obeidi said on Twitter. |
Aleppo rebels brace for long Syrian government siege Posted: 12 Jul 2016 01:04 PM PDT By Tom Perry and Suleiman Al-Khalidi BEIRUT/AMMAN (Reuters) - Rebel areas of Aleppo have stockpiled enough basic supplies to survive months of siege by Syrian pro-government forces that cut off their half of the city last week, even though some goods are running out, an opposition official said. Government forces backed by allies including Lebanon's Hezbollah and the Russian air force advanced last week to within a few hundred meters (yards) of the only road into the rebel-held part of Aleppo, making it impassable for the several hundred thousand people living there. The advance has brought Damascus closer to achieving its long-held aim of encircling rebel districts of Aleppo, Syria's largest city and a potent symbol of the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad now in its sixth year. |
Anti-Islamic State coalition officials to meet in U.S. next week: Pentagon Posted: 12 Jul 2016 03:09 PM PDT U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter and senior officials from other countries in the coalition battling Islamic State will meet near Washington, D.C., on July 20 to discuss the ongoing military campaign, the Pentagon said on Tuesday. Biden to meet Japanese, Korean officials in Hawaii Posted: 12 Jul 2016 01:18 PM PDT Vice President Joe Biden will begin a trip to the Pacific region on Wednesday that will include meetings with Japanese and Korean officials in Hawaii and visits to Australia and New Zealand, officials said on Tuesday. Biden's visit with partners in the Asia-Pacific begins just a day after an arbitration court in The Hague ruled that China had no historic title over the waters of the South China Sea and had breached the Philippines' sovereign rights with its actions. Biden will deliver remarks on trade enforcement in San Diego on Wednesday before traveling to Los Angeles to present an athletic achievement award at the ESPY sports ceremony. |
All eyes on Amir as Pakistan return for Test at Lord's Posted: 12 Jul 2016 05:35 PM PDT |
Posted: 12 Jul 2016 05:24 PM PDT THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) — An international tribunal rejected China's extensive claims in the South China Sea in a landmark ruling Tuesday that also found the country had aggravated the seething regional dispute and violated the Philippines' maritime rights by building up artificial islands that destroyed coral reefs and by disrupting fishing and oil exploration. While the decision is seen as a major legal declaration regarding one of the world's most contested regions, China immediately rejected it as a "farce" and the true impact is uncertain given the tribunal has no power of enforcement. While the findings cannot reverse China's actions, it still constitutes a rebuke, carrying with it the force of the international community's opinion. |

Two years the German chancellor's junior, May is highly regarded among European officials who largely welcomed news that she will become British prime minister on Wednesday after David Cameron bows out. Russia says willing to consider U.N. arms embargo on South Sudan Posted: 12 Jul 2016 04:15 PM PDT By Michelle Nichols UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - U.N. Security Council veto power Russia said on Tuesday it was willing to consider imposing an arms embargo on South Sudan and that sending more troops could help stabilize the world's newest nation after days of heavy fighting in the capital Juba. United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Monday called for the 15-member Security Council to impose an arms embargo on the oil-producing nation, a move backed by the United States, France, Britain, Angola and other council members. Russia said in January it was against an arms embargo, but on Tuesday Russian U.N. Ambassador Vitaly Churkin said that he was "not completely opposed" to the measure, though he was wary of whether it would actually achieve anything. |
U.S. urges all countries to adhere to South China Sea ruling Posted: 12 Jul 2016 04:12 PM PDT By David Brunnstrom and Jeff Mason WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States said on Tuesday a court ruling that China has no historic title over the waters of the South China Sea should be treated as final and binding and not be a reason to raise tensions. "We certainly would urge all parties not to use this as an opportunity to engage in escalatory or provocative action," White House spokesman Josh Earnest told reporters in a briefing aboard Air Force One. The Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague announced its ruling on Tuesday that there was no legal basis for China to claim historic rights to resources within much of the South China Sea, which has been subject to territorial disputes by several countries. |
Clinton welcomes South China Sea ruling, says critical to U.S. economy Posted: 12 Jul 2016 04:03 PM PDT U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton said Tuesday she welcomes an international tribunal's ruling denying China's claims in the South China Sea, saying the waters were "critical" to the U.S. economy. "The U.S. has a deep and abiding interest in the South China Sea and to the free flow of commerce – so critical to our economy – that flows through it. It is important that all claimants abide by this ruling and continue to pursue peaceful, multilateral means to resolve disputes among them," Clinton said in a statement provided to Reuters. |
Boost for UK Labour leader against party rebels Posted: 12 Jul 2016 03:59 PM PDT Britain's opposition Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn on Tuesday won a crucial victory against rebels seeking to unseat him, after the party's executive committee ruled he would automatically be included on a leadership ballot. The veteran socialist faces a challenge by senior MP Angela Eagle, although others may decide to stand in the race which will see the winner crowned in September. Three-quarters of Labour lawmakers backed a vote of no confidence in Corbyn on June 28, after months of criticism over his leadership boiled over following the shock vote by Britons to leave the European Union. |

U.S. lawmakers say Malaysia, India trafficking ratings may be too high Posted: 12 Jul 2016 03:42 PM PDT By Patricia Zengerle WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. lawmakers said on Tuesday they were concerned that Malaysia and India were rated too favorably in this year's State Department human trafficking report although the report seemed less influenced by politics than last year's. The U.S. Department of State's closely watched annual Trafficking in Persons (TIP) report was released on June 30. After last year's report provoked a firestorm of controversy, the Senate Foreign Relations and House Foreign Affairs Committees held hearings on Tuesday to review this year's findings. A low ranking is a black mark on a country's reputation and can subject a government to sanctions limiting access to aid from the United States, the International Monetary Fund or the World Bank. |

Macron holds first Paris rally as French presidency bid rumors swirl Posted: 12 Jul 2016 02:50 PM PDT By Michel Rose PARIS (Reuters) - France's Economy Minister Emmanuel Macron said on Tuesday he was determined to take his recently launched political movement to victory in 2017 elections, but stopped just short of announcing he would run for president at a first rally in Paris. The 38-year-old former investment banker, who launched the En Marche, or Forward, party in April, has kept the country guessing about his political ambitions, refusing to confirm or deny whether he would run for president in next year's election. At the Mutualité conference center in Paris' Latin Quarter, a venue often used for rallies by the left, the pro-reform minister told more than 3,000 supporters he was ready to take risks in the upcoming political battle, but crucially stopped short of announcing a bid. |

France's Macron edges towards presidential bid Posted: 12 Jul 2016 02:40 PM PDT France's rising political star Emmanuel Macron dropped more strong hints of his presidential ambitions on Tuesday, saying he wanted to lead his new political movement "to 2017 and to victory". The 38-year-old economy minister set up "En marche" (On the move) in April to the consternation of many of his Socialist Party colleagues, who see it as a challenge to the authority of embattled President Francois Hollande. While Macron stopped short of declaring himself a candidate for next year's presidential race, he told supporters at a meeting late Tuesday: "We will carry (the movement forward) together to 2017 and to victory". |
