Russian, Syrian missiles pound Aleppo, destroy hospital: rebels and aid workers Posted: 01 Oct 2016 04:01 PM PDT By Suleiman Al-Khalidi AMMAN (Reuters) - Russian warplanes and their Syrian government allies battered rebel-held areas in and around Aleppo on Saturday, and rebels and aid workers accused them of destroying one of the city's main hospitals and killing at least two patients. M10, the city's main trauma hospital, in eastern Aleppo, was struck as the United States and its allies urged Russia, which is trying to crush resistance to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, to halt the bombing and reach a diplomatic resolution. |
U.N. atomic agency chief says Iran sticking to nuclear deal Posted: 01 Oct 2016 12:09 PM PDT Iran has kept to a nuclear deal it agreed with six world powers last year limiting its stockpiles of substances that could be used to make atomic weapons, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) told French daily Le Monde. Confirming the findings of a confidential report by the U.N. agency seen by Reuters last month, IAEA Director-General Yukiya Amano said Tehran had observed the deal which was opposed by hardliners inside Iran and by skeptics in the West. "The deal is being implemented since January without any particular problem," he told Le Monde in an interview published on Saturday. |
PM vows to make Britain 'sovereign' in first Brexit detail Posted: 01 Oct 2016 02:09 PM PDT Prime Minister Theresa May will promise to make Britain "a sovereign and independent country" by repealing the act that took it into what is now the European Union next year, she told the Sunday Times newspaper. In an interview, May, appointed after Britain's vote in June to leave the EU, said she would not wait for an election in Germany next September before triggering Article 50 of the EU's Lisbon Treaty to start formal divorce proceedings. The former interior minister has been under pressure from EU officials, investors and members of her ruling Conservative Party to offer more detail on her plan for Britain's exit, beyond her catch phrase "Brexit means Brexit". |
Iran showcases new combat drone, copied from U.S. unmanned aircraft Posted: 01 Oct 2016 06:42 AM PDT Iran's Revolutionary Guards unveiled a home-built drone that they said was capable of carrying bombs, state media reported on Saturday, in what appeared to be another copy of a reconnaissance U.S. drone that Iran captured five years ago. The drone, called Saegheh, or lightning, was unveiled at an expo showcasing the latest achievements by the Revolutionary Guards' aerospace arm. "This long-range drone is capable of hitting four targets with smart precision-guided bombs with high accuracy," the head of the Revolutionary Guards' aerospace arm, Amir Ali Hajizadeh, was quoted as saying by state news agency IRNA. |
Pope says gender theory part of 'global war' on marriage, family Posted: 01 Oct 2016 10:45 AM PDT Pope Francis warned on Saturday of a "global war" against traditional marriage and the family, saying both were under attack from gender theory and divorce. Francis made his comments in an impromptu response to a question at a meeting of the small Catholic community in the ex-Soviet republic of Georgia. "You mentioned a great enemy of marriage: gender theory," the pope said in response to a woman who had asked about it being taught in schools. |
Hungarians set to reject migrant quotas in boon for PM Orban Posted: 01 Oct 2016 04:05 PM PDT By Krisztina Than BUDAPEST (Reuters) - An overwhelming majority of Hungarians are expected to reject the European Union's migrant quotas in a referendum on Sunday, which should boost Prime Minister Viktor Orban's standing at home and embolden him in his battles with Brussels. Orban, who has been in power since 2010, is among the toughest opponents of immigration in the EU, and over the past year he has sealed Hungary's southern borders with a razor-wire fence and thousands of army and police border patrols. While last year hundreds of thousands of migrants fleeing war and poverty in the Middle East crossed Hungary on their way to richer countries in Western Europe, this year Hungary recorded around 18,000 illegal border crossings. |

Storm-struck St. Lucia's PM says islands need more to tackle warming Posted: 01 Oct 2016 05:03 PM PDT By Sarah Peter CASTRIES, St. Lucia (Reuters) - Small island states need financial help to help cope with extreme weather linked to climate change, St. Lucian Prime Minister Allen Chastanet said, as his Caribbean country recovers from flooding and landslides triggered by Hurricane Matthew. Matthew hit St Lucia with tropical storm strength winds on Wednesday, and has since intensified to become the most powerful hurricane to cross the Caribbean in nine years, threatening Jamaica, Haiti and Cuba with 150 mile-per-hour (240 kph) winds. It is hard to say whether a particular storm has been affected by climate change, but some scientists say warmer seas will lead to more intense hurricanes. |
Colombian rebels confirm they will pay reparations to victims Posted: 01 Oct 2016 04:34 PM PDT Colombia's FARC rebels said Saturday they would pay reparations to victims of the country's long war as per a recent peace accord. Pedro Sanchez, Spain's fallen Socialist chief Posted: 01 Oct 2016 03:15 PM PDT At the helm of the Spanish Socialist party for more than two years, Pedro Sanchez -- or "Mr Handsome" as he is known -- fell for repeatedly saying "no" to the conservatives. For months, the 44-year-old had been resisting overtures by acting conservative Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy to enter a coalition or let his minority government rule, as Spain was knee deep in political paralysis following two inconclusive elections. The former economics professor was largely unknown when he took the reins of the Socialist party (PSOE) in July 2014 after winning the first ever primary elections organised by the 137-year-old grouping. |

Garcia, McIlroy spark Europe as US clings to Ryder Cup lead Posted: 01 Oct 2016 03:05 PM PDT Emotional Ryder Cup efforts by Sergio Garcia and Rory McIlroy sparked a Europe rally Saturday but the United States clung to a 6 1/2 - 5 1/2 lead after alternate shots foursomes matches. Garcia shrugged off hecklers and joined Spanish compatriot Rafa Cabrera Bello to win four of the last six holes and halve with Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed in one of the greatest comebacks in the history of the biennial team golf showdown. "To turn things around and take back that half, to push it that little bit extra, is fantastic," Europe captain Darren Clarke said. |

Powerful Hurricane Matthew swirls toward Jamaica, Haiti and Cuba Posted: 01 Oct 2016 02:38 PM PDT By Rebekah Kebede KINGSTON, Jamaica (Reuters) - Hurricane Matthew, the most powerful cyclone to form over the Atlantic since Hurricane Felix in 2007, churned across the Caribbean on Saturday on a path expected to put it over Jamaica and Haiti on Monday. Matthew, with winds at about 150 miles per hour (240 kph), could make landfall as a major storm on Jamaica's southern coast, home to the country's capital, Kingston, and its only oil refinery. The hurricane could also affect tourist destinations such as Montego Bay in the north and the southwest coast of flood-prone Haiti was also in harm's way, forecasters said. |
Spain's Socialist Party chief steps down Posted: 01 Oct 2016 02:31 PM PDT Spain's Socialist chief Pedro Sanchez quit Saturday after high-ranking party members staged a rebellion against him, in a move that could pave the way to unblocking the country's political paralysis. Weakened by dismal results in general and regional elections, the Socialist party (PSOE) is deeply divided between those who want to let a minority government led by acting conservative Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy govern, and others like Sanchez who categorically refuse. The party will now be run by an interim executive, which may direct its lawmakers to abstain in a parliamentary vote of confidence on a Rajoy-led government, instead of voting against it as they did last month under Sanchez's guidance, prompting its failure. |
