Emergency workers gather at the scene of a car bombBy Isabel Coles ERBIL (Reuters) - A car bombing claimed by the Islamic State killed three people on Friday outside the U.S. consulate in Erbil, in a relatively rare attack in the capital of Iraq's Kurdistan region. No U.S. personnel were hurt in the blast, according to the U.S. State Department, which said a "vehicle-borne improvised explosive device" exploded right outside the entrance to the heavily fortified compound. Smoke billows during an air strike on the Republican Palace in Yemen's southwestern city of TaizBy Mohamed Mokashaf ADEN (Reuters) - Yemen's former president Ali Abdullah Saleh said on Friday he would not leave the country, dismissing reports in the Gulf Arab media that he was seeking a safe exit as Saudi Arabian war planes bomb troops loyal to him and their Houthi militia allies. The United Nations, meanwhile, said about 150,000 people had been driven from their homes by three weeks of air strikes and ground fighting and more than 750 people killed. The Iran-allied Houthis, a Shi'ite Muslim movement from northern Yemen, have formed an alliance of convenience with Saleh, who is widely believed to be plotting behind the scenes to make a comeback on Yemen's tumultuous political scene. The person who can say to Ali Abdullah Saleh 'leave your country' has not been and will not be born," he wrote on his Facebook page.

The North's Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of Korea said Lippert's remarks were proof that Washington was intent on hostility. "Otherwise, next time, he could face a bigger mishap than getting cut in the cheek by a South Korean citizen," it said.

A man carries a wounded person in the rebel-held area of Douma, east of the Syrian capital Damascus, following reported air strikes by regime forces on March 15, 2015Two Syrian doctors urged Russian diplomats at the United Nations on Friday to put pressure on President Bashar al-Assad to allow life-saving medical supplies into a besieged city near Damascus. The meeting came a day after the UN Security Council heard the two doctors give a detailed account of treating victims of chemical attacks last month in Idlib province. Doctor Zaher Sahloul told the diplomats that 10 people had died of kidney failure in the besieged city of Douma because they did not have access to dialysis fluid and 23 others are at risk unless the medical aid is let in. Russia, an ally of the Assad regime, voted in favour of a resolution last year that demanded access for humanitarian aid and set up deliveries of cross-border aid convoys, without the consent of Damascus.

Colombia's Santos calls for deadline on FARC peace talks

Posted: 17 Apr 2015 03:09 PM PDT

Colombia's President Juan Manuel Santos on Friday warned that the country's patience with Marxist FARC rebels is wearing thin and that the peace process to end five decades of war must have a deadline. Two days after the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) broke a unilateral ceasefire, ambushing and killing 11 soldiers in rural Cauca province, Santos pledged to remain at the negotiating table with the rebels but called for a timeline. "We must put deadlines on this process and if (the FARC) want peace they must demonstrate with deeds and not with words." The rebels called a ceasefire back in December and demanded the government reciprocate by halting all offensives against the group. The attack on the soldiers, who had been carrying out an anti-drugs operation in southwestern Colombia, prompted calls from the opposition for Santos to suspend the peace talks.

Windies frustrate England as Anderson tops Botham

English fast bowler James Anderson celebrates after equaling the highest English wicket taker record with 383 on day five of the first cricket Test match between West Indies and England in St John's, Antigua on April 17, 2015James Anderson became England's leading wicket-taker in Test history but celebration of the historic milestone could not be complemented by a team triumph as the West Indies hung on for a draw on the final day of the first Test at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua on Wednesday. Jason Holder played the innings of his young cricketing life to take the home side to safety with three wickets in hand at 350 for seven after they were set the improbable target of 438. His calm, controlled batting was the perfect foil to Denesh Ramdin's growing defiance, the pair putting on 105 runs for the seventh wicket when Anderson broke the record and gave his team one last chance to push for victory heading into the final hour of the match. Having drawn level with the record tally of 383 wickets by former all-rounder Sir Ian Botham when he dismissed Marlon Samuels in the morning, Anderson returned with the second new ball and finally separated Ramdin and Holder, inducing an indeterminate defensive prod from Ramdin to have the West Indies captain caught for 57 by his England counterpart, Alastair Cook, at first slip.
