Russia warns Turkey over Aegean warship incident Posted: 13 Dec 2015 08:10 AM PST By Katya Golubkova MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia on Sunday warned Turkey to stop staging what it called provocations against its forces in or near Syria after one of its warships fired warning shots at a Turkish vessel in the Aegean to avoid a collision. The Russian Defence Ministry said one of its warships, the destroyer Smetlivy, had been forced to fire the warning shots on Sunday morning and that it had summoned the Turkish military attache over the incident. "The Turkish military diplomat was given a tough explanation about the potentially disastrous consequences from Ankara's reckless actions towards Russia's military contingent fighting against international terrorism in Syria," the Defence Ministry said in a statement. |
How the world learned its lesson and got a climate deal Posted: 13 Dec 2015 10:11 AM PST By Richard Valdmanis and Emmanuel Jarry PARIS (Reuters) - It was an agreement born from a fear of failure, delivered by the smoothness of French diplomacy. Six years earlier, countries had bitterly walked away from global climate talks in Copenhagen without a deal. The decision to reassemble in Paris to try again at getting almost 200 countries to sign a pact on cutting carbon emissions was a gamble: another collapse could the end world's ability to forge a common approach to dealing with climate change. |
Merkel dismisses U.S. request for more military help against Islamic State Posted: 13 Dec 2015 12:22 PM PST Chancellor Angela Merkel on Sunday brushed off what a Germany magazine said was a request from the United States to provide more military help in the fight against Islamic State. "I believe Germany is fulfilling its part and we don't need to talk about new issues related to this question at the moment," Merkel told the ZDF broadcaster when asked about the Der Spiegel magazine report of the U.S. request. Der Spiegel reported on Saturday that U.S. Defense Secretary Ashton Carter had sent a letter asking for a bigger military contribution from Germany, a week after parliament approved a plan to join the campaign in Syria. |
Dozens die in strikes on Syrian school district, other areas Posted: 13 Dec 2015 07:31 AM PST Intense air and missile strikes on a school district and other areas in insurgent-held Damascus suburbs killed dozens of people on Sunday, including children, a monitoring group and local rescue workers said. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said unidentified war planes hit the town of Douma, 10 miles (15 km) northeast of the capital, and surface-to-surface missiles fired by the Syrian army also hit the surrounding areas, including Eastern Ghouta. The strikes killed at least two children and a school principal, it said. |
U.S. 'shocked' at Hungarian plans to honor WW2 anti-Semite Posted: 13 Dec 2015 11:29 AM PST By Marton Dunai SZEKESFEHERVAR, Hungary (Reuters) - A U.S. envoy said on Sunday Washington was shocked by plans to erect a statue of Balint Homan, who contributed to murderous anti-Semitism in Hungary in the 1930s and 40s. "From the U.S. government perspective we feel very strongly that history and the damage that this man did to Hungarian citizens who happened to be Jewish cannot be ignored, and to put up that statue seems incomprehensible," Ira Forman, special envoy against anti-Semitism, told Reuters. Hungary's Jewish community has called on the right-wing government of Prime Minister Viktor Orban's Fidesz party to block the statue. |

"The issue is on the agenda," Solis said at the Cuban capital's Jose Marti International Airport. The growing flow of Cuban migrants through Central America became choked last month when Costa Rica dismantled a people-smuggling ring and Nicaragua, a Cuban ally, closed its border to them. |

French far-right fails to win any regions in upset for Le Pen Posted: 13 Dec 2015 03:29 PM PST By Ingrid Melander and Michel Rose PARIS (Reuters) - Marine Le Pen's far-right National Front did not win any region in French elections on Sunday, in a setback to her hopes of being a serious presidential contender in 2017. The regional election run-off, in which the conservatives won seven constituencies and the Socialists five, was no real victory for either of these two mainstream parties, shaken by the far-right's growing appeal to disillusioned voters. Boosted by fears about security and immigration after the Islamist militant attacks in Paris a month ago that killed 130 people, the National Front (FN) had won more votes than any other party nationally in last week's first round. |

"This is reckless by President Zuma, he is playing Russian roulette with the South African economy," opposition Democratic Alliance leader Mmusi Maimane said. Zuma sacked Nhlanhla Nene from the ministry late on Wednesday, sparking a wave of criticism and financial turmoil, and replaced him with the relatively unknown lawmaker David van Rooyen. |

French far-right fails to win a single region in elections Posted: 13 Dec 2015 03:25 PM PST France's far-right National Front (FN) failed to win a single region in elections Sunday despite record results in the first round, as voters flocked to traditional parties to keep them out of power. With presidential elections due in 2017, the anti-immigration FN had hoped the regional polls would act as a springboard for leader Marine Le Pen. The FN had topped the vote in six of 13 regions on December 6, propelled by anger over the struggling economy and fears created by last month's jihadist attacks in Paris that left 130 dead. |

Pollster Datafolha said 40,000 people turned out in Brazil's largest city of Sao Paulo, down from 135,000 in an August protest and 210,000 in March. "This is just a warm-up, there will be a huge mobilization in January," said Paloma Morena, a 35-year-old scientist on Sao Paulo's most famous street, Avenida Paulista, where protesters carried blow-up caricatures of Rousseff and her predecessor, Luíz Inácio Lula da Silva, dressed in prison uniforms. |

Despite her party's defeat in regional elections on Sunday, she sounded a typically defiant and vitriolic note, lashing out at the traditional parties for teaming up against her and vowing to press on. The first round of the regional elections had given the anti-immigration FN the highest share of the vote, bolstering Le Pen's claim to lead "the first party of France". |
France's Le Pen says far-right rise unstoppable despite defeat Posted: 13 Dec 2015 01:19 PM PST The far-right's rise in France is unstoppable, National Front leader Marine Le Pen told supporters after exit polls showed her party won no region in election run-offs, suffering a major disappointment after topping the votes in the first round. Le Pen said the result would not discourage the "inexorable rise, election after election, of a national movement" behind her party. |
France's Sarkozy says strong FN vote a 'warning' to all politicians Posted: 13 Dec 2015 01:19 PM PST The far-right National Front's high score in regional elections should be a warning to all mainstream politicians, former French President Nicolas Sarkozy said on Sunday after exit polls showed the FN had failed to win any regions. "This mobilization in favor of our candidates should in no way let us forget the warning sent to all politicians, ourselves included, in the first round," he said. |

He was speaking after exit polls showed the far-right National Front had lost election run-offs in at least three key regions, despite topping last week's first round. Honestly, we weren't expecting anyone to win," said Sahar Hassan Nasief, a women's rights activist in the Red Sea city of Jeddah. "We need more," said Aljazi al-Hossaini, who was defeated in Diriyah on the edge of Riyadh, where three women won seats, according to Saudi news channel Al-Ekhbaria. |
