Germany re-imposes border controls to slow migrant arrivals

Posted: 13 Sep 2015 04:04 PM PDT

Migrants arrive at the main railway station in DortmundBy Michelle Martin and Alastair Macdonald BERLIN/BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Germany re-imposed border controls on Sunday after Europe's most powerful nation acknowledged it could scarcely cope with thousands of asylum seekers arriving every day. A day before deeply divided European Union ministers tackle the migrant crisis, the U.N. refugee agency also called on every member state to take in a share of asylum-seekers under a Brussels plan which some countries are fiercely resisting. Berlin announced that the temporary measure would be taken first on the southern frontier with Austria, where migrant arrivals have soared since Chancellor Angela Merkel effectively opened German borders to refugees a week ago.

Iran nuclear official says uranium exploration results promising

Posted: 13 Sep 2015 09:59 AM PDT

Preliminary exploration surveys for raw uranium in Iran are progressing well but it is too early to announce any discoveries, the spokesman for the Atomic Energy Agency of Iran (AEOI) was quoted as saying on Sunday. Behrouz Kamalvandi spoke to the ISNA agency a day after AEOI chief Ali Akbar Salehi was quoted by state news agency IRNA as saying recent "discoveries" had made Iran confident of its reserves and a new mine would become operational soon. The discovery of raw uranium, which can be refined to make nuclear fuel, would make Iran's disputed nuclear program more self-sufficient and raise concerns among those who fear the program is aimed at developing a bomb, a charge Iran denies.

Brazil's President Rousseff stands in a vehicle during a civic-military parade to commemorate Brazil's Independence Day in BrasiliaBrazilian President Dilma Rousseff has one last chance to stem a growing political and economic crisis before being forced to step down, one of the country's leading daily newspapers said on Sunday. In an unusual front-page editorial, Folha de S.Paulo said Rousseff needs to take "drastic measures" including additional spending cuts and tax hikes to make up for a 2016 budget gap that has cost Brazil its investment-grade rating from Standard & Poor's. Rousseff, a leftist who was re-elected by a thin margin in 2014, is facing impeachment calls as her government struggles with a deep economic recession and a massive corruption scandal at state-run oil company Petrobras that has implicated several of her political allies. In a cabinet meeting on Saturday, Rousseff ordered her ministers to find an additional 15 billion reais ($3.9 billion) in budget savings, daily Estado de S.Paulo reported on Sunday.

SINGAPORE (AP) — Every four or five years, Singaporeans vote in general elections without ever asking the question: Which party can best run the government? That's a no-brainer. It's the same party that's been ruling the wealthy Southeast Asian city-state for a half-century. The questions most ask instead is how much voice should they give the opposition. That explains the overwhelming majority that the People's Action Party has won in every election since independence in 1965, including the last one on Friday, which returned it with an even greater share of the votes than before. It was a result that any political party in the world would salivate over — 83 of 89 seats in Parliament and 70 percent of all votes cast.

The reshuffle, announced in a presidential decree on Friday, expanded the Cabinet to 41 members from 34 and was seen as an attempt to silence critics of the Bongo family's domination of Gabonese political life since independence from France in 1960.
