Migrant chaos at Budapest train station; Germany says EU rules still hold Posted: 01 Sep 2015 01:28 PM PDT By Krisztina Than and Madeline Chambers BUDAPEST/BERLIN (Reuters) - Hundreds of angry migrants demonstrated outside Budapest's Eastern Railway Terminus on Tuesday demanding they be allowed to travel on to Germany, as the biggest ever influx of migrants into the European Union left its asylum policies in tatters. Around 1,000 people waved tickets, clapping, booing and shouting "Germany! Germany!" outside the station. A refugee crisis rivaling the Balkan wars of the 1990s as Europe's worst since World War Two has polarized and confounded the European Union, which has no mechanism to cope with the arrival of hundreds of thousands of poor and desperate people. |
Iran nuclear deal backers near votes to protect pact in U.S. Congress Posted: 01 Sep 2015 04:01 PM PDT By Patricia Zengerle WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Supporters of the international nuclear agreement with Iran moved within one vote of mustering enough support to protect the deal in the U.S. Congress on Tuesday when two more Democratic senators said they would support the pact. Senators Bob Casey and Chris Coons, known as Iran hard-liners, both said they backed the agreement announced on July 14 between the United States, five other world powers and Tehran. Altogether 31 Senate Democrats and two independents who vote with them now support the deal, a potential legacy foreign policy achievement for Democratic President Barack Obama. |
Big guns in east Ukraine fall silent, two more die from wounds in Kiev protests Posted: 01 Sep 2015 07:31 AM PDT Sporadic shelling and shooting, which each side has blamed on the other, had ensured a steadily mounting death toll despite the ceasefire called as part of a peace plan worked out in Minsk, Belarus, in February. More than 6,500 people have been killed since a separatist rebellion erupted there in April 2014. |
Greece's Syriza party lead shrinks further in election race: poll Posted: 01 Sep 2015 02:47 PM PDT By Angeliki Koutantou ATHENS (Reuters) - Greece's Syriza party is on course to win 26 percent of votes in a snap election in September, just one point ahead of the conservative New Democracy party, a poll published by the Pulse for Action 24 television channel said on Tuesday. Former premier Alexis Tsipras of Syriza resigned in August to seek a new mandate for a bailout deal he clinched with the country's international creditors, but Syriza's slipping poll lead suggests the decision could backfire. Tsipras came to power in January promising to end austerity in a country battered by recession and unemployment but eventually accepted stringent conditions for a new 86-billion-euro bailout after months of difficult negotiations with Greece's lenders. |
Satellite images confirm major temple destroyed in Syria's Palmyra: U.N Posted: 01 Sep 2015 09:31 AM PDT Satellite images have confirmed the destruction of the Temple of Bel, which was one of the best preserved Roman-era sites in the Syrian city of Palmyra, a United Nations agency said, after activists said the hardline Islamic State group had targeted it. A comparison of before and after images shows the damage to the temple at the UNESCO World Heritage site, the Geneva-based United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) said. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group and other activists said on Sunday that Islamic State had destroyed part of the more than 2,000-year-old temple, one of Palmyra's most important monuments. |
Pope to allow all priests to forgive abortion during Holy Year Posted: 01 Sep 2015 02:49 PM PDT By Isla Binnie and Philip Pullella VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Francis will give all priests discretion during the Roman Catholic Church's Holy Year to formally forgive women who have had abortions -- the Argentine pontiff's latest move towards a more open and inclusive church. In Church teaching, abortion is such a grave sin that those who procure or perform it incur an automatic excommunication, which can only be lifted by designated church officials. Francis described the "existential and moral ordeal" faced by women who have terminated pregnancies and said he had "met so many women who bear in their heart the scar of this agonizing and painful decision". |

Guatemalan president faces judgment day in Congress Posted: 01 Sep 2015 03:30 PM PDT Guatemala's Congress convened Tuesday to debate whether to strip embattled President Otto Perez of his immunity and force him to face prosecution over massive corruption that has sparked unprecedented protests. Protesters demanding the conservative leader's ouster formed a cordon outside Congress to protect lawmakers as they arrived, after a separate group of demonstrators initially blocked the building's entrances. Shrinking Exit Glacier a powerful sign of warming climate: Obama Posted: 01 Sep 2015 02:56 PM PDT By Roberta Rampton SEWARD, Alaska (Reuters) - President Barack Obama walked down a winding wooded path past a small brown post marked "1926," past a glacial stream trickling over gravel that eons of ice have scraped off mountain peaks. "This is as good a signpost of what we're dealing with on climate change as just about anything," Obama told the reporters waiting on the outwash plain at the base of the glacier. It was the signature moment of Obama's trek to Alaska, aimed at making the world pay heed to how much damage rising seas have already caused, and demand their leaders reach a deal in Paris in December to curb climate-changing carbon emissions. |
