More than 200 feared dead in sinking of migrant boat Posted: 06 Aug 2015 10:45 AM PDT By Wladimir Pantaleone PALERMO, Sicily (Reuters) - Hopes faded of finding more survivors on Thursday from a shipwreck in which 200 migrants are feared drowned, as rescue ships were called to the aid of more migrant boats in the same area of the Mediterranean. "We are witnessing a genocide caused by European selfishness," said Palermo mayor Leoluca Orlando as the Irish navy ship LE Niamh docked in the port carrying some 370 survivors of Wednesday's disaster and 25 corpses, including three children. Orlando, speaking on Italian television as hearses arrived to take the bodies away, called on European leaders to do more to prevent such disasters and to allow more refugees to re-settle in their countries. |

Kerry says U.S. will not accept restrictions in South China Sea Posted: 06 Aug 2015 06:58 AM PDT By David Brunnstrom and Praveen Menon KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry on Thursday accused China of restricting navigation and overflights in the disputed South China Sea, despite giving assurances that such movements would not be impeded. Addressing a regional meeting in Kuala Lumpur that has been dominated by the South China Sea, Kerry said China's construction of facilities for "military purposes" on man-made islands was raising tensions and risked "militarization" by other claimant states. Kerry's blunt criticism of Beijing, in front of his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi, is likely to lift the South China Sea up the agenda when Chinese President Xi Jinping visits Washington next month, some experts said. |

The Center for Biological Diversity cited extensive corrosion that is believed to have caused an onshore pipeline to burst in May west of Santa Barbara, unleashing the biggest oil spill to hit that region in more than four decades. The failed pipeline, which had been inspected by its owner, Texas-based Plains All American Pipeline, weeks before the rupture, is decades younger than much of California's offshore infrastructure, the group said in its petition. |

Allies of Brazil's Rousseff see leadership vacuum as economy sinks Posted: 06 Aug 2015 02:41 PM PDT By Anthony Boadle BRASILIA (Reuters) - Allies of Brazil's President Dilma Rousseff have turned to her opponents to talk about filling what they see as a damaging leadership vacuum after losing confidence in her ability to pull the country out of an economic tailspin, party insiders said on Thursday. Two parties broke ranks with Rousseff's governing coalition on Wednesday night, fueling a lopsided defeat on a lower chamber bill raising salaries for police officers, prosecutors and government attorneys. The president's failure to control her political base in Congress, dramatized by House Speaker Eduardo Cunha's own very public break with Rousseff, has undermined her efforts to bridge a gaping fiscal deficit that threatens Brazil's prized investment grade credit rating. |
