Palestinians kill four in Jerusalem synagogue attack Posted: 18 Nov 2014 12:01 PM PST By Maayan Lubell JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Two Palestinians armed with a meat cleaver and a gun killed four worshippers in a Jerusalem synagogue on Tuesday before being shot dead by police, the deadliest such incident in six years in the holy city. Three of the victims held dual U.S.-Israeli citizenship and the fourth man was a British-Israeli national, police said. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas of inciting violence in the city and said the killings, along with a spate of recent attacks, were part of a "battle over Jerusalem". ... |

The flare-up came just hours after court bailiffs managed to clear part of a protest camp in the heart of the city that has been occupied by pro-democracy demonstrators for nearly two months, while leaving most of the main protest site intact. ... |
Iran to resist 'excessive' demands in push for nuclear deal Posted: 18 Nov 2014 10:29 AM PST By Fredrik Dahl and Parisa Hafezi VIENNA (Reuters) - Iran said it would resist Western pressure to make what it considered to be excessive concessions in nuclear talks that started on Tuesday, highlighting obstacles that could prevent a historic deal being reached by a Nov. 24 deadline. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry declined to make any predictions for what he called a "critical week", during which negotiators from Iran and six world powers will push to end a 12-year dispute over Iran's nuclear program and dispel fears of a new Middle East war. ... |

But proof of whether President Xi Jinping is serious about narrowing differences that have marked his first two years in office will depend on how China's festering disputes are managed in the months ahead. ... |
Colombia rebels say army general's capture is part of war Posted: 18 Nov 2014 12:39 PM PST By Rosa Tania Valdés and Helen Murphy HAVANA/BOGOTA (Reuters) - Colombia's Marxist FARC rebels justified their capture of an army general in a remote jungle area as a legitimate act of war on Tuesday and urged the government to rethink its retaliatory suspension of peace talks. The two-year peace process faces its most serious crisis so far after rebel negotiators said General Ruben Dario Alzate and two others were the group's prisoners and made no offer to release them as a gesture to restart negotiations in Cuba. ... |

Top Asian News at 12:30 a.m. GMT Posted: 18 Nov 2014 04:33 PM PST TOKYO (AP) — Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe called a snap election for December and put off a sales tax hike planned for next year, seeking a renewed mandate for his all-or-nothing policies to end two decades of economic stagnation. Despite those policies, the Japanese economy slipped into a recession last quarter after a sales tax increase in April crushed consumer and business spending. That forced Abe to delay the second hike planned for October next year until April 2017. |

US Senate rejects Keystone pipeline by one vote Posted: 18 Nov 2014 04:04 PM PST The US Senate on Tuesday narrowly rejected a bill that would have approved construction of the Keystone XL pipeline to bring crude oil to Gulf coast refineries from Canada's controversial tar sands. Rejection of the pipeline, which became a political football in the aftermath of November's midterm elections, sets up another likely showdown when the new Republican-controlled Congress convenes in January. Many of the 45 Republicans who supported the bill, as well as some of the 14 Democrats who voted with them, described Keystone XL as a "no-brainer" that would generate thousands of jobs and improve American energy independence. "Senate Democrats once again stood in the way of a shovel-ready jobs project that would help thousands of Americans find work -- a remarkable stance after an election in which the American people sent a clear message to Congress, to approve serious policies," top Republican Senator Mitch McConnell said. |

G. Bissau says it remains 'fragile' despite some progress Posted: 18 Nov 2014 03:58 PM PST Guinea Bissau remains in a "fragile state" following a 2012 coup and still requires support from the international community, the prime minister told the UN Security Council Tuesday. Domingos Pereira, who was appointed as Prime Minister in June, said while there has been some progress clocked, the troubled West African nation still faces challenges. "Despite significant advances that the country has registered in terms of reforms, there are still serious risks when it comes to fragility," Pereira said after a United Nations meeting on the situation in Guinea Bissau. He said the country faces key issues, namely "a fragile state, limited resources and persistent social instability" and called for support from the international community. |

Korea 'crimes against humanity' Posted: 18 Nov 2014 03:48 PM PST The United Nations on Tuesday adopted a landmark resolution condemning North Korean rights abuses and laying the groundwork for putting the Pyongyang regime in the dock for crimes against humanity. A resolution asking the Security Council to refer North Korea to the International Criminal Court passed by a resounding vote of 111 to 19 with 55 abstentions in a General Assembly human rights committee. North Korea reacted angrily to the vote and announced that it was breaking off talks on improving human rights with the European Union, which drafted the resolution with Japan. |

"I will not allow this issue and finger-pointing to put in doubt the trust that the majority of Mexicans have put in me," Pena Nieto said in a speech in his native central State of Mexico. Already facing a major crisis over the presumed massacre of 43 college students, Pena Nieto has come under scrutiny over the luxurious house valued at $7 million and located in a ritzy Mexico City neighborhood. |

The vote count was 59-41 in favor, but 60 "ayes" would have been needed to assure passage. Fourteen Democrats voted for the bill, joining all 45 Republicans who voted to support the pipeline.
