Intelligence gaps may have helped Afghan Taliban breach NATO fortress Posted: 23 Nov 2016 03:30 PM PST By Mirwais Harooni and Qiamuddin Shams BAGRAM, Afghanistan (Reuters) - In the year before Qari Naib blew himself up on Nov. 12 inside a NATO base near Kabul killing four Americans, Afghan intelligence warned the U.S. military at least twice that a worker could be planning an attack, government and security officials said. The Afghan officials also said they repeatedly asked Western forces to share information about local employees at the vast Bagram air base in order to check for "suspicious people among them", but were refused. When asked about the information sharing, NATO spokesman Captain William Salvin said NATO forces "routinely partner with ANDSF (Afghan National Defence and Security Forces) on all elements of security, to include information sharing. |
More Rohingyas flee to Bangladesh as violence spreads in Myanmar Posted: 23 Nov 2016 09:19 AM PST By Mohammad Nurul Islam COX'S BAZAR, Bangladesh (Reuters) - More Rohingya Muslims from Myanmar poured into neighboring Bangladesh this week, with some feared to have drowned after a boat sank during a bid to flee violence that has killed at least 86 people and displaced 30,000. Some Rohingya refugees have been missing since Tuesday after a group crossed the River Naaf that separates Myanmar and Bangladesh. Myanmar troops poured into the western state of Rakhine along the frontier with Bangladesh in response to coordinated attacks on three border posts on Oct. 9 that killed nine police officers. |
Civilians flee as Shi'ite fighters near flashpoint town near Mosul Posted: 23 Nov 2016 09:18 AM PST By Isabel Coles and Saif Hameed ERBIL/BAGHDAD, Iraq (Reuters) - Thousands of Iraqi civilians have fled Tal Afar as Shi'ite paramilitary groups close in around the Islamic State-held town on the road between Mosul and Raqqa, the main cities of the militant group's self-styled caliphate in Iraq and Syria. The exodus from Tal Afar, 60 km (40 miles) west of Mosul, is worrying humanitarian organizations as some of the civilians are heading into insurgent territory, where aid cannot be sent to them, provincial officials said. Popular Mobilisation units, a coalition of mostly Iranian-backed militias, are trying to encircle Tal Afar, a largely ethnic Turkmen town, as part of the offensive to capture Mosul, Islamic State's last major stronghold in Iraq. |
France's Fillon seen winning conservatives' primaries: poll Posted: 23 Nov 2016 10:07 AM PST Former French prime minister Francois Fillon will win the conservative nomination for next year's presidential election by a wide margin, an Ifop-Fiducial poll forecast ahead of a run-off vote on Sunday. Fillon, a 62-year-old social conservative with economically liberal ideas who admires late British prime minister Margaret Thatcher, unexpectedly topped the first round of the primaries last Sunday. Considering the divisions of the Left and deep unpopularity of Socialist President Francois Hollande, the winner of the run-off has a strong chance of being elected president in May. Anyone can take part in the primaries, whether they are members of the Les Republicains conservative party or not. |
Venezuela opposition says Vatican-brokered talks 'frozen' Posted: 23 Nov 2016 03:23 PM PST By Corina Pons and Alexandra Ulmer CARACAS (Reuters) - Venezuela's opposition said on Wednesday talks with the government were "frozen" after officials failed to attend meetings, throwing cold water on Vatican-brokered attempts to bridge the country's deep political crisis. The two sides are fundamentally at loggerheads, with the opposition seeking the ouster of Socialist President Nicolas Maduro, while authorities vow he will not leave office before his term ends in 2019. "The government, in an irresponsible manner, froze the dialogue process by not showing up to two technical meetings last night," opposition coalition leader Jesus Torrealba told Reuters. |

The fate of children staying in the squalid camp where migrants converged in the hope of making it across to Britain, has been a political problem for the British government. |
