Rights groups dismayed by Afghanistan's return to executions Posted: 21 Nov 2012 03:03 PM PST KABUL (Reuters) - Human rights groups reacted with dismay on Wednesday to Afghanistan's resumption of executions after a near-four-year moratorium on a penalty that characterized the austere rule of the former Taliban regime. Eight men found guilty of "crimes against the people, especially women and children" were hanged on Tuesday and eight more were to meet the same fate either on Wednesday or Thursday, according to a government official. This alarmed activists who said the return of executions in a country with a weak judiciary was a setback. ... |
Analysis: Relief at Gaza ceasefire can't mask its frailty Posted: 21 Nov 2012 03:23 PM PST JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Triumphal Hamas celebrated a "victory" in their Gaza stronghold on Wednesday after a truce was declared with Israel, where a sober reckoning of how the next round may go underscored the total lack of trust between the two foes. Palestinians and Israelis alike were relieved that their eight-day conflict had come to an end without a bloody invasion of the Gaza Strip. But on both sides there was a foreboding that their ceasefire might not last very long. "We are sceptical," said a senior Israeli government official, who declined to be named. ... |

Syrian jets blast rebels in Damascus suburb Posted: 21 Nov 2012 03:58 PM PST AMMAN/BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syrian warplanes bombed a Damascus suburb on Wednesday in a push to dislodge rebels from a stronghold that threatens President Bashar al-Assad's hold on the capital, opposition activists said. Heavy fighting also raged in other outskirts of the city in the most serious challenge to Assad's seat of power in months. In Brussels, NATO envoys were considering a request by Turkey to deploy Patriot missiles its territory to defend itself against any Syrian attacks. ... |
Goma rebels say they will "liberate" all Congo Posted: 21 Nov 2012 01:23 PM PST SAKE/GOMA, Democratic Republic of Congo (Reuters) - Rebel forces in eastern Congo vowed on Wednesday to "liberate" all of the vast central African country as they began seizing towns near the Rwandan border and spoke of a 1,000-mile march to the capital Kinshasa. The M23 rebels, widely believed to be backed by Rwanda, captured the eastern city of Goma on Tuesday, a provincial capital home to a million people; United Nations peacekeepers simply looked on, after Congolese troops had quit the town. ... |

World powers want new nuclear talks with Iran quickly Posted: 21 Nov 2012 12:45 PM PST BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Six world powers agreed on Wednesday to seek renewed talks with Iran as fast as possible, reflecting a heightened sense of urgency to resolve a long rift over Tehran's disputed nuclear activity and avert the threat of war. Their call coincided with growing evidence of Iran expanding nuclear capacity in an underground bunker virtually impervious to attack and follows the November 6 re-election of U.S. President Barack Obama, which has cleared the way for new contacts. ... |
Congo's "The Terminator": at large but out of sight Posted: 21 Nov 2012 10:50 AM PST (Reuters) - He is one of the most wanted war crimes fugitives in the world and the International Criminal Court lists him as "at large".
