Rescuers race through night to save Haiti students (AP)

Paloma continues to strengthen, batters Caymans (AP)

According to the National Hurricane Center at 1 a.m. EST the center of Major Hurricane Paloma was about 50 miles east of Grand Cayman.  Paloma is moving to the northeast near 8 mph. Maximum sustained winds have increased and are nearing 120 mph with higher gusts. Some strengthening is forecast during the next 24 hours. Paloma is a Category 3 hurricane.
