U.S. conducts raid in Syria, says it kills senior Islamic State leader Posted: 16 May 2015 04:30 PM PDT By Will Dunham and Matt Spetalnick WASHINGTON (Reuters) - American special operations forces killed a senior Islamic State leader in a raid in Syria, U.S. officials said on Saturday, an operation that marked a departure from Washington's strategy of relying primarily on air strikes to target militants there. Delta Force commandos used UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters and V-22 Osprey tiltrotor aircraft to punch deep into eastern Syria from Iraq. They engaged in a firefight and hand-to-hand combat with Islamic State fighters, killed a key figure in the group named as Abu Sayyaf and captured his wife, U.S. officials said. |

The White House said President Barack Obama ordered the raid that killed the Islamic State figure identified as Abu Sayyaf, who helped direct the group's oil, gas and financial operations. |
U.S., China clash over disputed South China Sea Posted: 16 May 2015 03:42 AM PDT By David Brunnstrom and Michael Martina BEIJING (Reuters) - The United States and China clashed over a territorial dispute in the South China Sea on Saturday, as China's foreign minister asserted its sovereignty to reclaim reefs saying its determination to protect its interests is "as hard as a rock". After a private meeting with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi showed no sign of backing down despite Kerry urging China to take action to reduce tension in the South China Sea. "With regard to construction on the Nansha islands and reefs, this is fully within the scope of China's sovereignty," Wang told reporters, using the Chinese name for the Spratly islands. |
Drone strike in northwest Pakistan kills several militants Posted: 16 May 2015 12:36 PM PDT By Haji Mujtaba BANNU, Pakistan (Reuters) - A U.S. drone strike in northwestern Pakistan's Shawal region killed at least four militants on Saturday, officials said, as Pakistani military forces dug into positions in the area ahead of what officials described as an anti-Taliban offensive. "According to internal conversations of the militants, members of the Punjabi Taliban and foreign militants believed to be Arabs were killed in the drone strike," said a security official in Miranshah, the headquarters of the mountainous region of North Waziristan along the border. Punjab is a province in Pakistan. |
Egyptian court seeks death penalty for ex-president Mursi Posted: 16 May 2015 04:58 PM PDT By Stephen Kalin CAIRO (Reuters) - An Egyptian court on Saturday sought the death penalty for former president Mohamed Mursi and 106 supporters of his Muslim Brotherhood in connection with a mass jail break in 2011. Mursi and his fellow defendants, including top Brotherhood leader Mohamed Badie, were convicted for killing and kidnapping policemen, attacking police facilities and breaking out of jail during the uprising, against then-president Hosni Mubarak. The court's request drew condemnations from Amnesty International and Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan. The court sought capital punishment in a separate case for Brotherhood leader Khairat el-Shater and 15 others for conspiring with foreign militant groups Hamas and Hezbollah against Egypt. |

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the blast, but it bore the hallmark of Islamist militant group Boko Haram, which has been fighting a six-year insurgency in a bid to establish an Islamic state in northern Nigeria. Boko Haram took over a territory larger than Belgium last year, killing thousands of people and displacing some 1.5 million. The militants overran most of Borno state and parts of Adamawa and Yobe. |

Guyana swears in new president after multiracial bloc wins vote Posted: 16 May 2015 04:46 PM PDT By Neil Marks GEORGETOWN (Reuters) - Former army brigadier David Granger was sworn in as Guyana's new president on Saturday after his multiracial opposition coalition narrowly won a national election, heralding a new chapter in the ethnically-divided South American nation. Granger's APNU+AFC coalition, a recent fusion between the traditional black party and a smaller third party, broke the ruling Indo-Guyanese PPP party's 23 year grip on power in Monday's election. Thousands flocked to Georgetown's Parliament Square to cheer on Granger, a 69-year-old Afro-Guyanese who has vowed to crack down on corruption and govern for citizens of both Indian and African descent. "I shall be a good president for all the people of Guyana," Granger said after taking the oath of office for his five-year term. |

Condemned Boston Marathon bomber may spend years in prison during appeal Posted: 16 May 2015 04:39 PM PDT By Elizabeth Barber BOSTON (Reuters) - Condemned to die for his part in the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is likely to await his fate over the course of years, if not decades, locked up in grim prisons under extreme conditions while his lawyers appeal his sentence. The U.S. Bureau of Prisons has not yet decided where Tsarnaev will go, but he is likely end up in one of two high-security detention facilities, Colorado's ADX or Indiana's Terre Haute, according to U.S. District Attorney for Massachusetts Carmen Ortiz. First the judge will hold a hearing where he will formally pronounce the sentence, Ortiz said after a jury decided on Friday that Tsarnaev, 21, deserved the death penalty. He will then pass into the custody of the Federal Bureau of Prisons, which will determine where he should be held. |

Top Asian News at 12:00 a.m. GMT Posted: 16 May 2015 05:02 PM PDT BEIJING (AP) — China and the United States budged not a bit Saturday over Beijing's assertive development in disputed parts of the South China Sea, with Foreign Minister Wang Ji politely but pointedly dismissing Washington's push for a diplomatic solution to ease tensions. Wang and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry stressed the importance of dialogue to resolve competing claims in the waterway. But neither diplomat showed any sign of giving ground over Chinese land reclamation projects that have alarmed the United States and China's smaller neighbors. |

US slams Gambia's president for 'unconscionable' gay comments Posted: 16 May 2015 03:30 PM PDT The United States slammed Gambian President Yahya Jammeh on Saturday for "unconscionable" remarks, after the West African leader reportedly threatened to slit the throats of gay men in his country. In a public speech this month, Jammeh said he would slit the throats of men who wanted to marry other men in the small West African nation, according to Human Rights Campaign. Without quoting his remarks, US National Security Advisor Susan Rice said the comments were part of an "alarming deterioration of the broader human rights situation" in Gambia. "The recent unconscionable comments by Gambian President Yahya Jammeh underscore why we must continue to seek a world in which no one lives in fear of violence or persecution because of who they are or whom they love," Rice said in a statement. |

Seattle flotilla protests Shell's Arctic drilling plans Posted: 16 May 2015 02:30 PM PDT By Bryan Cohen and Victoria Cavaliere SEATTLE (Reuters) - Hundreds of activists in kayaks and small boats fanned out on a Seattle bay on Saturday to protest plans by Royal Dutch Shell to resume oil exploration in the Arctic and keep two of its drilling rigs stored in the city's port. Environmental groups have vowed to disrupt the Anglo-Dutch oil company's efforts to use the Seattle as a home base as it outfits the rigs to return to the Chukchi Sea off Alaska, saying drilling in the remote Arctic waters could lead to an ecological catastrophe. Demonstrators have planned days of protests, both on land and in Elliott Bay, home to the Port of Seattle, where the first of the two rigs docked on Thursday. Kayakers on Saturday paddled around the rig yelling "Shell No." Others unfurled a large banner that read "Climate Justice." Environmental groups contend harsh and shifting weather conditions make it impossible to drill in the Arctic, a region with a fragile environment that helps regulate the global climate because of its vast layers of sea ice. |

With swoop on Islamic State compound, U.S. commandos seek to disrupt financing Posted: 16 May 2015 02:13 PM PDT By Matt Spetalnick and Phil Stewart WASHINGTON (Reuters) - After weeks of planning and surveillance focused on a compound near the oilfields of eastern Syria, elite American commandos were finally given the green light to swoop in on their target – an Islamic State commander considered to have acted as the group's "chief financial officer." Mounting a rare raid in a war-ravaged country where U.S. President Barack Obama has long been reluctant to commit "boots on the ground," the Delta Force unit flew in from Iraq under cover of darkness in the early hours of Saturday on Black Hawk helicopters and Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft. Their objective, according to U.S. officials: to capture alive a Tunisian-born militant leader, Abu Sayyaf, believed responsible for overseeing the group's black-market sales of oil and gas and other financial operations to help fund a brutal Jihadist campaign that has seized swathes of Syria and Iraq. As U.S. special operations forces assaulted the compound housing Islamic State leadership in the town of al-Amr,, they were confronted by militant fighters. |
