Factbox: The economics of India's seasonal debt bondage trap Posted: 09 Nov 2016 04:18 PM PST By Anuradha Nagaraj Kantabanji, India (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Every November and December, villagers across the Balangir district of Odisha state in eastern India stuff belongings into sacks, leave their huts and visit the nearest temple to pray for good fortune. Rights groups call this a form of slavery known as debt bondage. Here are key facts about the economics of seasonal debt bondage in India, where around 18 million people are trapped in some kind of slavery, according to the latest Global Slavery Index by Walk Free Foundation: At least 10 million people work in India's tens of thousands of brick kilns, according to a 2015 report by the Centre for Science and Environment. |

All through the autumn, he drove to villages around the town of Kantabanji in India's eastern Odisha state looking for labor. India's move to curb "black money" will break backbone of traffickers: Satyarthi Posted: 09 Nov 2016 04:14 PM PST By Nita Bhalla NEW DELHI (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Nobel laureate Kailash Satyarthi has welcomed India's overnight move to withdraw 500 and 1,000 rupee notes from circulation to crack down on corruption and counterfeit currency, saying it would also to help curb human trafficking and child slavery. The shock currency move, announced late on Tuesday by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, aims to bring billions of dollars worth of unaccounted wealth which people are hoarding, or "black money", into the mainstream economy and curb corruption. Banks are meant to alert the Reserve Bank of India and tax authorities of any unusually large sums being exchanged - which may be the product of ill-gotten gains. |
UK urged to stop locking up stateless 'ghost people' Posted: 09 Nov 2016 04:13 PM PST By Emma Batha LONDON (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Britain is locking up stateless people for long periods even though there is nowhere they can be deported to, campaigners, lawyers and academics said on Thursday as they called for a strict time limit on detention. The European Network on Statelessness (ENS) estimates several hundred stateless people are living in "hidden misery" in Britain, at risk of destitution and exploitation. Many are subject to "prolonged and pointless detention" as Britain tries to remove them even though no country will accept them, ENS director Chris Nash said. |

Overall, women in Britain were paid 13.9 percent less than men in 2016, a slight improvement on the previous year when the average full time gender pay gap was 14.1 percent, according to the Fawcett Society. At the current rate, it will take another 62 years before women's work is valued as much as that of men, the group calculated using data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS). |

Posted: 09 Nov 2016 03:46 PM PST MOSCOW (AP) — World leaders struggled Wednesday to come to grips with a new reality — Donald Trump will be the next U.S. president — and an as yet unanswerable question: How many of his campaign pledges will he actually act on? The remarkable triumph of the politically untested businessman was welcomed in some countries, such as Russia, while in others it was a major shock. When Trump takes office in January, world leaders will confront a man whose stated views represent a sharp break with U.S. foreign policy orthodoxy. He has cozied up to Russian President Vladimir Putin, warned stunned NATO allies they will have to pay for their own protection, floated a ban on Muslims entering the U.S. |
