Ukraine sees 'understanding' with Russia on peace moves

Posted: 09 Jun 2014 12:57 PM PDT

An old woman sits in a car with bullet holes and shattered windows as she flees fighting in the eastern Ukrainian town of SlavianskBy Timothy Heritage KIEV (Reuters) - Ukraine said on Monday it had reached a "mutual understanding" with Moscow on parts of a plan proposed by President Petro Poroshenko for ending violence in the east of the country. Kiev gave no details and Russia did not comment directly but two days of talks, following a brief encounter in France last week that broke the ice between Poroshenko and Russian President Vladimir Putin, have given momentum to peace moves. German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said in a statement released in Berlin that there was "some faint light at the end of the tunnel" in the Ukraine conflict for the first time in months. The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said in a brief statement in Kiev that Russian and Ukrainian representatives had met three times in the past two days to discuss Poroshenko's plan to end an insurrection by pro-Russian separatists in the east.

Iran says six-month extension of nuclear talks may be necessary

Posted: 09 Jun 2014 01:36 PM PDT

By Stephanie Nebehay and Michelle Moghtader GENEVA/DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran's talks with global powers on curbing its nuclear program in exchange for an end to sanctions could be extended for another six months if no deal is reached by a July 20 deadline, a senior Iranian official said on Monday. U.S. and Iranian officials held talks in Geneva on Monday to tackle ways of breaking a deadlock which has raised the likelihood that the deadline will lapse without a deal meant to head off the risk of a Middle East war over the nuclear issue. Western officials say Iran wants to maintain a uranium enrichment capability far beyond what is suitable for civilian nuclear power stations. Iran says it wants to avoid reliance on foreign suppliers of fuel for planned nuclear reactors and rejects Western allegations it seeks the capability to make nuclear weapons under the guise of a peaceful energy program.

More than two dozen dead as Taliban assault Pakistan's main airport

Posted: 09 Jun 2014 10:52 AM PDT

By Syed Raza Hassan KARACHI (Reuters) - Taliban militants disguised as security forces stormed into Pakistan's busiest airport on Sunday night, triggering an all-night battle in which at least 27 people were killed. The assault on Jinnah International Airport in Karachi, Pakistan's sprawling commercial hub of 18 million people, all but destroys prospects for peace talks between the Pakistani Taliban and the government of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. It deals a heavy blow to Sharif's efforts to attract foreign investors to revive economic growth, and raises questions about security at Pakistan's main installations. Shahidullah Shahid, a Taliban spokesman, said: "The main goal of this attack was to damage the government, including by hijacking planes and destroying state installations." Just before midnight, 10 gunmen in military uniforms armed with automatic rifles and rocket-propelled grenades arrived at the cargo terminal in two minivans, then shot their way in.

Eighty children became ill after they were accidentally administered a vaccine intended for cattle while they were being used to trial other medicines in the mid-1970s, the Newstalk radio station reported. The report follows new evidence that suggests the bodies of up to 800 young children were deposited, without coffins or gravestones, in a mass grave near a Catholic-run home in County Galway. Historian Catherine Corless, who made the discovery, says her study of death records for the St Mary's home in Tuam suggests that a former septic tank near the home was used as a mass grave.
