Illegal Volkswagen diesel emission systems may require two solutions Posted: 29 Sep 2015 03:32 PM PDT By Paul Lienert and Joseph White DETROIT (Reuters) - Volkswagen AG 's promise to fix pollution control systems on about 11 million diesel vehicles will involve changes to software, and possibly hardware, that could leave owners with cars that deliver diminished fuel economy and performance or require more maintenance, experts said Tuesday. The German automaker's new chief executive, Matthias Mueller, said Tuesday VW customers would need to have those diesel cars "refitted." The company did not specify what the refitting might entail. Some analysts have said the job could cost more than $6.5 billion. A former executive of Volkswagen's U.S. operation said Tuesday the company may be required to change only software, and not hardware, to bring older diesel models now deemed illegal into compliance with U.S. emissions standards. |

U.S. seeks to protect threatened bull trout Posted: 29 Sep 2015 03:01 PM PDT By Laura Zuckerman SALMON, Idaho (Reuters) - The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service on Tuesday unveiled measures to help the threatened bull trout, a native fish whose cold-water streams in Western states could be warming due to climate change, but conservationists said the plan was too timid. Under the plan, due to take effect on Wednesday, bull trout populations will be divided into six recovery units across five states, and efforts will be made to reduce threats such as the invasion of non-native fish species and barriers like temporary dams that stop the trout from swimming upstream to spawn. The bull trout was believed to have vanished from about half its historic range when it was added to the U.S. endangered and threatened species list in 1998-99. |
