Obama reassures France after 'unacceptable' NSA spying Posted: 24 Jun 2015 10:21 AM PDT By John Irish and Elizabeth Pineau PARIS (Reuters) - U.S. President Barack Obama reaffirmed in a phone call with his French counterpart Francois Hollande on Wednesday Washington's commitment to end spying practices deemed "unacceptable" by its allies. The presidents' conversation, announced by Hollande's office, came after transparency lobby group WikiLeaks revealed on Tuesday that U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) had spied on the last three French presidents. The latest revelations of espionage among Western allies came after it emerged that the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) had spied on Germany and that Germany's own BND intelligence agency had cooperated with the NSA to spy on officials and companies elsewhere in Europe. |
NATO says won't be dragged into arms race with Russia Posted: 24 Jun 2015 01:44 PM PDT By Adrian Croft and Robin Emmott BRUSSELS (Reuters) - The head of NATO said on Wednesday the alliance would not be forced into a new arms race with Russia but said what he called Moscow's aggression in Ukraine had compelled it to strengthen its defenses. The United States announced plans this week to station tanks and heavy weapons in NATO member states on Russia's border, shortly after President Vladimir Putin said Moscow would add 40 missiles to its nuclear arsenal. "We will not be dragged into an arms race, but we must keep our countries safe," NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg told reporters at a meeting of alliance defense ministers. |
U.S., China appear to get little done in removing economic barriers Posted: 24 Jun 2015 01:01 PM PDT By David Brunnstrom WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States and China urged each other on Wednesday to remove barriers to foreign investment, saying that business ties were vital to overall relations, although they appeared to achieve little beyond rhetoric at a high profile three-day meeting that was overshadowed by security rivalries. Speaking to leading U.S. and Chinese CEOs on the final day of talks in Washington, Chinese Vice Premier Wang Yang said that while investment cooperation had made significant progress, "there are still problems and obstacles and this requires new ways of thinking, cooperation and policy environment." While the world's two largest economies have $590 billion in two-way trade, efforts to secure a bilateral investment treaty have been stalled for seven years. |
U.N. calls on Netanyahu to act on commitment to two-state solution Posted: 24 Jun 2015 03:41 PM PDT By Michelle Nichols UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - The United Nations called on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday to translate into action his commitment to a two-state solution between Israel and the Palestinians, including halting settlement construction. Netanyahu took a stand against Palestinian statehood during his election campaign earlier this year, but has since committed to a two-state solution. Palestinians seek a state in Gaza, the West Bank and East Jerusalem, lands Israel captured in 1967. |
EU states at odds on eve of summit on migration crisis Posted: 24 Jun 2015 04:15 PM PDT By Alastair Macdonald and Shadia Nasralla BRUSSELS/VIENNA (Reuters) - Austria threatened to reimpose controls on its Hungarian border and Britain considered adding security around the French port of Calais on Wednesday as divided EU leaders prepared to debate how to stem a flood of desperate migrants. On the eve of a Brussels summit looking for ways to spread the load of receiving hundreds of thousands fleeing poverty and war in Africa and the Middle East, the frontier rows across the 28-nation bloc were a reminder that the stakes are high. Austria's warning about reinstating checks on its passport-free border with Hungary follows a refusal by Budapest to take in asylum seekers sent back to it by other member states under EU rules. |
Kerry heads to Vienna on Friday for Iran nuclear talks: U.S. Posted: 24 Jun 2015 02:14 PM PDT U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry will fly to Vienna on Friday to take part in Iran nuclear talks ahead of a self-imposed June 30 deadline, U.S. State Department spokesman John Kirby said in a statement. The talks between Iran and six major powers aim to reach an agreement under which Tehran would restrain its nuclear program in exchange for relief from economic sanctions that have crippled its economy. The nations involved in the talks with Iran, which include Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and the United States, have set June 30 as a deadline for a deal but the negotiations are widely expected to slide past that date. |

Greece's Tsipras in crunch debt talks with creditors Posted: 24 Jun 2015 04:55 PM PDT Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras will continue marathon talks with creditors in Brussels Thursday to thrash out a debt deal to save Athens from default, despite having lashed out at lenders for rejecting his reform plans. Tsipras held a two-hour late-night meeting with the heads of the European Commission, International Monetary Fund and European Central Bank, Greece's main bailout monitors, officials said, after seven hours of discussions earlier Wednesday failed to produce a breakthrough. The parties agreed to resume the talks at 0700 GMT Thursday morning in hopes of finalising a deal in time to present it at a meeting of eurozone finance ministers later in the day. |
Spruce up ASAP, taxes drop: La Paz says ahead of pope visit Posted: 24 Jun 2015 04:53 PM PDT Bolivia's capital is gearing up for a papal visit with an unusual idea: a law that would slash La Paz residents' property taxes by 80 percent if they fix up their homes before the pontiff's July trip. It is aimed at making a special welcome for Pope Francis, who is due in Bolivia July 8, according to city councilman Sergio Siles, who sponsored the law. La Paz is high in the Andes and has about 766,000 residents. |

Drug-resistant bacteria lurk in crowded Afghan war clinic Posted: 24 Jun 2015 04:47 PM PDT By Krista Mahr KUNDUZ, Afghanistan (Reuters) - A frontline hospital in Afghanistan already stretched by rising war casualties is facing another, invisible danger that is only beginning to come to light: highly contagious strains of drug-resistant bacteria which are making treatment harder. While drug resistance is a problem in hospitals the world over, early evidence from tracking by Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) in the last two years suggests it may be acute in Afghanistan. At the trauma center in the northern city of Kunduz, where Afghan forces are battling Taliban militants, staff have identified nearly 100 cases of multi-drug resistant bacteria, or nearly 30 percent of samples tested, since last year. |

Kerry warns no Iran deal if concerns left unanswered Posted: 24 Jun 2015 04:42 PM PDT Top US diplomat John Kerry warned Wednesday there would be no deal with Iran if it fails to satisfy all lingering questions about its nuclear program, as he prepares to head back to tough negotiations. Firing the starting gun on what is set to be the last phase of a gruelling diplomatic marathon to stop Iran acquiring a nuclear bomb, the State Department announced Kerry would be leaving on Friday for Vienna. "It may be that the Iranians will not fill out the full measure of what was agreed on in Lausanne, in which case there will not be an agreement," Kerry told reporters. |

France passes sweeping new spying law Posted: 24 Jun 2015 04:27 PM PDT France passed a controversial new spying law on Wednesday granting sweeping powers to snoop on citizens on the same day that leaked documents caused uproar over US espionage against French leaders. France remains on high alert and is struggling to monitor the hundreds of young Muslims leaving to fight with jihadists in Syria and Iraq, as well as keep tabs on potential attacks at home. The vote came at an awkward time for French lawmakers, less than 24 hours after leaked documents appeared to prove the US had spied on President Francois Hollande and his predecessors between 2006 and 2012, sparking a diplomatic spat between the two countries. |

As Cameron prepared to present his proposals to an EU summit in Brussels on Thursday, 27 bosses from among the biggest listed British companies to the likes of Hogan's Cider, a brewery in the central English county of Warwickshire, said Britain should stay in the EU. |
