Pentagon sent live anthrax to Japan in 2005 Posted: 12 Jun 2015 01:41 PM PDT By David Brunnstrom WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Pentagon on Friday added Japan to a list of countries that received live anthrax samples from the U.S. military, while a news report said the lab that sent out the bacteria faced sanctions in 2007 for failing to kill specimens but was never fined. The sample that went to Japan was sent to the U.S. military base of Camp Zama about 25 miles (40 km) southwest of Tokyo in 2005 and was destroyed in 2009, Defense Department spokesman Colonel Steve Warren said. Warren said the anthrax, which was sent to Japan for the purpose of testing detection equipment, came from a master lot that was thought to have been inactive but turned out to be active when tested. |

Top Asian News at 11:30 p.m. GMT Posted: 12 Jun 2015 04:32 PM PDT KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — They call it the "mini-Pentagon" -- a white marble building in the heart of Afghanistan's capital built with U.S. funds to serve as the headquarters of a modern military more than a decade in the making. But the newly constructed building is a world apart from the front-lines of Afghanistan's unfinished war, where soldiers huddled at exposed checkpoints increasingly rely on police and local militias, and where logistical bottlenecks almost led to the loss of a key northern city to insurgents who swept across the northern plain in April. |
California curtails some longstanding water rights over drought Posted: 12 Jun 2015 04:28 PM PDT By Alex Dobuzinskis LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - California's water board, facing a devastating four-year drought, on Friday curtailed some longstanding water rights for agriculture and other uses in Northern and Central California for the first time in nearly 40 years, officials said. The curtailment affects more than 100 so-called senior water rights holders, including water districts and farmers of commodities such as almonds, pears and grapes, with most of those located near the Sacramento River, the State Water Resources Control Board said in a statement. The order will impose limits on water use by these rights holders for irrigation and provision of livestock, and marks the first time since a drought in the late 1970s that California has curtailed water diversions to senior water rights holders in the state, the board statement said. |

The status of roughly 1,000 bears who roam northwestern Montana, including the Glacier National Park and the Blackfeet Indian Reservation, is to be reviewed on Tuesday at a Montana meeting of the Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee, the government team responsible for coordinating recovery of the bears in the Lower 48 states. Committee spokesman Gregg Losinski said government bear managers believe the animals are thriving in the region and may recommend removing them from the federal list of endangered and threatened species. |
