Iran and the powers -- the United States, Russia, China, France, Britain and Germany -- are trying to reach a settlement by June 30 under which Iran would curb its nuclear program in exchange for relief from economic sanctions. The United States has said it stands by the end-June deadline for the deal, meant to assuage Western fears that Iran is working to develop a nuclear bomb.


Pentagon sent live anthrax to Japan in 2005

By David Brunnstrom WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Pentagon on Friday added Japan to a list of countries that received live anthrax samples from the U.S. military, while a news report said the lab that sent out the bacteria faced sanctions in 2007 for failing to kill specimens but was never fined. The sample that went to Japan was sent to the U.S. military base of Camp Zama about 25 miles (40 km) southwest of Tokyo in 2005 and was destroyed in 2009, Defense Department spokesman Colonel Steve Warren said. Warren said the anthrax, which was sent to Japan for the purpose of testing detection equipment, came from a master lot that was thought to have been inactive but turned out to be active when tested.

California curtails some longstanding water rights over drought

The curtailment affects more than 100 so-called senior water rights holders, including water districts and farmers of commodities such as almonds, pears and grapes, with most of those located near the Sacramento River, the State Water Resources Control Board said in a statement. The order will impose limits on water use by these rights holders for irrigation and provision of livestock, and marks the first time since a drought in the late 1970s that California has curtailed water diversions to senior water rights holders in the state, the board statement said.

A federal-state team that oversees the recovery of grizzly bears in and along the northern Continental Divide in Montana believes the animals there are thriving and may no longer require federal protections, the group's spokesman said. The status of roughly 1,000 bears who roam northwestern Montana, including the Glacier National Park and the Blackfeet Indian Reservation, is to be reviewed on Tuesday at a Montana meeting of the Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee, the government team responsible for coordinating recovery of the bears in the Lower 48 states. Committee spokesman Gregg Losinski said government bear managers believe the animals are thriving in the region and may recommend removing them from the federal list of endangered and threatened species.
