Venezuela summit draws few leaders in blow to Maduro Posted: 17 Sep 2016 03:13 PM PDT By Girish Gupta and Deisy Buitrago MARGARITA ISLAND, Venezuela (Reuters) - Only a handful of leaders have traveled to a meeting of a large Cold War-era bloc in Venezuela this week, in an embarrassment for the crisis-hit socialist government. Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro has touted the 17th meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement as one that would "be remembered for centuries," as the unpopular leftist seeks to bolster his international legitimacy. Zimbabwe's Robert Mugabe, Iran's Hassan Rouhani and Palestine's Mahmoud Abbas, as well as regional allies from Cuba, Ecuador and Bolivia are among the few heads of states who have landed on the Caribbean island of Margarita. |
U.S.-led forces strike Syrian troops, prompting emergency U.N. meeting Posted: 17 Sep 2016 03:56 PM PDT By Angus McDowall and Andrew Osborn BEIRUT/MOSCOW (Reuters) - U.S.-led coalition air strikes killed dozens of Syrian soldiers on Saturday, Russia and a monitoring group said, putting a U.S.-Russian brokered ceasefire in jeopardy and prompting an emergency U.N. Security Council meeting. The United States military said the coalition stopped the attacks against what it had believed to be Islamic State positions in northeast Syria after Russia informed it that Syrian military personnel and vehicles may have been hit. Russia called for an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council after the incident, and diplomats said the 15-member body was due to meet behind closed doors at 7:30 p.m. ET. |
Pro-Putin party seen winning even greater sway in Russia's parliament Posted: 17 Sep 2016 02:17 PM PDT By Andrew Osborn MOSCOW (Reuters) - The ruling United Russia party is expected to win even greater dominance over Russia's lower house in a parliamentary election on Sunday, showing that support for President Vladimir Putin is holding up despite sanctions and a deep economic slowdown. The election for the Duma, or lower house, is being seen as a dry run for Putin's expected presidential campaign in 2018. It is also a test of how well the Kremlin can oversee trouble-free elections. |
Merkel faces setback in Berlin vote due to migrant fears Posted: 17 Sep 2016 04:10 PM PDT By Michael Nienaber BERLIN (Reuters) - German Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservatives look set to suffer a second electoral blow in two weeks in a Berlin city vote on Sunday as a growing number of voters are expected to express their unease with her refugee-friendly policy. The anti-immigrant Alternative for Germany (AfD) is expected to profit from a popular backlash over Merkel's decision a year ago to keep German borders open for refugees and the party could enter its tenth regional assembly out of Germany's 16 states. Polls point to heavy losses for Merkel's Christian Democrats (CDU) in the vote for the Berlin city assembly which means the center-left Social Democrats (SPD) may be able to ditch them from their current coalition. |
False alarm leads to major police operation in central Paris Posted: 17 Sep 2016 08:57 AM PDT Parts of central Paris were cordoned off on Saturday after a false alarm triggered a major security operation, French police said. French government security alert app - SAIP - warned citizens that a police operation was under way in Saint-Leu church in the busy shopping district of Chatelet and advised people to stay away. Interior minister, Bernard Cazeneuve, issued a statement confirming the false alarm and said that "the circumstances around the intervention" had yet to be determined. |
Canada's Trudeau sees potential for stronger ties with China Posted: 17 Sep 2016 12:46 PM PDT By Allison Lampert MONTREAL (Reuters) - Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, speaking days after a Canadian man was released from prison in China, said on Saturday there was "tremendous potential" for stronger and more stable ties with the Asian country. Trudeau won a diplomatic coup last week after China deported Kevin Garratt, who had been detained for two years on allegations of spying. The release came shortly after Trudeau's official visit to China earlier this month and ahead of Chinese Premier Li Keqiang's arrival in Canada next week. |

'Coalition raid' hits Syria army as truce wavers Posted: 17 Sep 2016 04:50 PM PDT A US-led coalition fighting jihadists in Syria admitted it may have hit an army position in the east Saturday, in strikes that Russia and a monitor said killed at least 62 soldiers. The strikes came less than a week into a fragile ceasefire aimed at stopping the bloodshed in Syria's five-year civil war, as Russia accused what it termed "moderate rebels" of causing the truce to fail. American officials said the US-led coalition fighting the Islamic State (IS) group in Syria may have hit Syrian military positions. |

"Coalition forces believed they were striking a Daesh fighting position," Central Command, known as Centcom, said in a statement, using an alternate term for the IS group. The United States "regrets" the death of Syrian troops, a senior US administration official said. |

Aid budgets under pressure as funds stretched to cope with refugees, say campaigners Posted: 17 Sep 2016 04:16 PM PDT Governments are failing to meet the world's massive humanitarian challenges because aid budgets in many countries are being stretched to cover the refugee crisis, a leading anti-poverty group said on Sunday. Goals such as tackling disease and ending extreme poverty by 2030 may slip down the agenda as donor governments shift funds away from long-term development aid, The ONE Campaign said. The group's analysis of international aid budgets comes ahead of a major U.N. summit on Monday on tackling the refugee and migrant crisis at a time of record displacement. |

Security Council to discuss air strikes by U.S.-led forces on Syrian troops near Deir al-Zor, a spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Saturday. Maria Zakharova said the strikes, which the Russian Defence Ministry had said killed 62 Syrian soldiers, jeopardized a Russian-U.S. agreement on Syria and looked like evidence that Washington was helping Islamic State militants. "We are reaching a really terrifying conclusion for the whole world: That the White House is defending Islamic State. |
Russia votes for new parliament with Putin secure Posted: 17 Sep 2016 02:01 PM PDT Russians began voting in parliamentary polls late Saturday, with parties loyal to President Vladimir Putin set to maintain their dominance despite the Kremlin making a show of cleaning up the vote after mass protests last time around. The nationwide elections follow several years of tumult that have seen the country annex Crimea from Ukraine, lurch into its worst stand-off with the West since the Cold War, plunge into economic crisis and launch a military campaign in Syria. Despite the dramatic events that have rocked the country, the campaign for the State Duma -- widely seen as a rubber-stamp body that has slavishly toed the Kremlin line -- was dubbed the most boring in recent memory by observers and high levels of voter apathy suggest that turnout could be low. |
