India's pro-business Modi storms to historic election win Posted: 16 May 2014 12:41 PM PDT By Rajesh Kumar Singh and Aditi Shah NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Narendra Modi thundered to victory on Friday in India's election, trouncing the ruling Nehru-Gandhi dynasty in a seismic political shift that gives the Hindu nationalist and his party a mandate for sweeping economic reform. Modi's landslide, the most resounding election victory India has seen in 30 years, was welcomed with a blistering rally on India's stock markets and raucous celebrations at offices across the country of his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), where supporters danced, let off fireworks and handed out sweets. The BJP looked certain of a parliamentary majority, giving the 63-year-old former tea-seller ample room to advance reforms started 23 years ago by current Prime Minister Manmohan Singh but which stalled in recent years. |
Venezuela president urges re-start of political dialogue Posted: 16 May 2014 04:13 PM PDT Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro urged opposition leaders on Friday to return to political talks intended to stem unrest around the country or face the "repudiation" of the nation. Moderate leaders of the Democratic Unity (MUD) coalition broke off dialogue this week, saying government officials were insulting them and rebuffing requests for releases of opposition-linked prisoners. Unrest has flared again in Caracas in recent days, with more than 100 youths arrested during violent clashes with security forces and attacks on government buildings. "We don't accept blackmail from anyone," Maduro said during a ceremony with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Caracas. |
Libya closes Benghazi airport due to fighting - director Posted: 16 May 2014 01:39 PM PDT Libyan authorities closed the airport in the eastern city of Benghazi on Friday because of fighting between irregular forces of the self-declared Libyan National Army and Islamist militants, the airport's director said. "We have closed the airport for the safety of passengers as there were clashes in the city. The airport will be reopened depending on the security situation," Ibrahim Farkash, director of Benghazi's Benina airport, told Reuters. |
Colombian government, rebels move closer to peace deal Posted: 16 May 2014 04:51 PM PDT By Rosa Tania Valdés and Helen Murphy HAVANA/BOGOTA (Reuters) - Colombia's FARC rebels reached an agreement with the government on eliminating the illegal drug trade and called a weeklong ceasefire on Friday, giving a political boost to President Juan Manuel Santos in his re-election bid. The unilateral ceasefire includes the first round of presidential elections on May 25. It was announced after Santos, once a clear favorite, began to falter in public opinion polls. The center-right president's lead has evaporated with the rise of right-wing rival Oscar Ivan Zuluaga, now tipped to win in two recent surveys if, as expected, the voting goes to a second-round runoff on June 15. |
Proposed Dominican Republic immigration law gets mixed reaction Posted: 16 May 2014 02:43 PM PDT By Ezra Fieser SANTO DOMINGO (Reuters) - Proposed legislation offering a path to citizenship for tens of thousands of Dominican-born children of immigrants met mixed reactions on Friday from human rights groups, with some saying it does not protect enough people who could lose citizenship due to a court ruling. President Danilo Medina sent a bill to Congress on Thursday that would provide documentation to some children of immigrants and give permanent residency to others with the opportunity to apply for citizenship. The court ordered the civil registry to audit birth records dating back to 1929, stripping documentation from those who did not qualify, even if they had previously been issued papers. Human rights groups said as many as 200,000 people or more could be made stateless, most of them children of migrants from Haiti, which shares the island of Hispaniola with the Dominican Republic. |
Libyan militia clashes with Islamists in Benghazi, 19 killed Posted: 16 May 2014 03:28 PM PDT By Ayman al-Warfalli and Ahmed Elumami BENGHAZI, Libya (Reuters) - Libyan irregular forces backed by helicopters clashed with Islamist militias in Benghazi on Friday in fighting that left at least 19 people dead and posed a new test to the fragile government. Members of the self-declared Libyan National Army, led by retired General Khalifa Haftar, shelled bases belonging to Ansar al-Sharia and another Islamist militant group in Benghazi, said Mohamed Al-Hejazi, a spokesman for Haftar's forces. The violence prompted Libya's prime minister to order the regular military to control any armed groups - including Haftar's forces - in the eastern city, where militants often clash with the army, and assassinations and bombings are common. Since the 2011 civil war that ousted Muammar Gaddafi after 42 years of one-man rule, Libya has been unable to impose authority over brigades of former rebels who refuse to disarm and have carved out regional fiefdoms. |

Ukrainian foreign minister calls on West to impose tougher sanctions on Russia Posted: 16 May 2014 05:02 PM PDT The West should impose tougher sanctions on Russia, which is waging a "hidden war" in eastern Ukraine, Ukraine's acting Foreign Minister Andriy Deshchytsia said in an interview with German newspaper Die Welt. The United States and the European Union have already imposed several rounds of sanctions on Russian individuals and some companies, accusing Russian President Vladimir Putin of stoking the eastern rebellions, a charge Putin has denied. "It's also important to impose preventative sanctions before Russia does even more damage," he said. Deshchytsia said German politicians should be aware "that Russia will not stop at Luhansk and Donetsk" and added that if they do not want to be held responsible for destabilizing the region, the German government has to be tougher toward Russia. |
Top Asian News at 12:00 a.m. GMT Posted: 16 May 2014 05:02 PM PDT NEW DELHI (AP) — India's opposition leader, Narendra Modi, will become the next prime minister of the world's largest democracy, winning the most decisive election victory the country has seen in three decades and sweeping the long-dominant Congress party from power. Modi, a career politician whose campaign promised a revival of economic growth, will have a strong mandate to govern at a time of profound changes in Indian society. He also has said he wants to strengthen India's strategic partnership with the United States. But critics worry the ascendance of his Hindu nationalist party could worsen sectarian tensions with India's minority 138 million Muslims. |

Abductions seen as just one factor in coming Nigeria election Posted: 16 May 2014 03:17 PM PDT By Bate Felix and Matthew Mpoke Bigg ABUJA (Reuters) - Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan's last-minute decision to cancel his first visit to the village where Islamist rebels abducted more than 200 schoolgirls has sharpened criticism of his handling of the crisis. Yet the government's performance since last month's kidnappings is unlikely to prove decisive for Nigeria's polarized electorate if Jonathan decides to stand for re-election next February, analysts and voters said on Friday. Nigeria, a country of 170 million, is riven by political, regional and religious tensions as well as long-standing grievances over how its oil wealth should be shared. As a result, Boko Haram's five-year insurgency in the northeast is just one issue facing voters, even though thousands have died. |
