Germany says NATO concerned about Trump 'obsolete' remark Posted: 16 Jan 2017 10:52 AM PST By Tom Körkemeier and Andreas Rinke BRUSSELS/BERLIN (Reuters) - Germany's Foreign Minister said on Monday that U.S. President-elect Donald Trump's comments that NATO was obsolete had aroused concern across the 28-member alliance. Frank-Walter Steinmeier, speaking after a meeting with alliance Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg in Brussels, said Trump's remarks contradicted views expressed by designated Defense Secretary James Mattis. "I've spoken today not only with EU foreign ministers but NATO foreign ministers as well and can report that the signals are that there's been no easing of tensions," Steinmeier told reporters when asked about Trump's interview with Bild newspaper and the Times of London. |
Istanbul New Year's nightclub attacker caught: media reports Posted: 16 Jan 2017 02:42 PM PST By Daren Butler ISTANBUL (Reuters) - The gunman suspected of killing 39 people in an Istanbul nightclub on New Year's Day has been caught by police in the city's Esenyurt district, the Hurriyet newspaper website and other media reports said on Tuesday. The man, who media quoted police as saying had operated under the cover name Abu Muhammed Horasani, was caught in a hideout with his four-year-old son, Hurriyet said. Dozens of people have previously been detained in connection with the attack for which Islamic State has claimed responsibility, saying it was revenge for Turkish military involvement in Syria. |
Cuba, United States to fight terrorism, drug trafficking and other crimes Posted: 16 Jan 2017 04:37 PM PST By Marc Frank HAVANA (Reuters) - Cuba and the United States on Monday signed an agreement to cooperate in the fight against terrorism, drug trafficking, money laundering and other international criminal activities on the eve of President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration. President Barack Obama's Deputy National Security Adviser Ben Rhodes, who helped negotiate the normalization of relations between the two countries begun two years ago, was present for the signing, according to the White House. A brief statement said Rhodes was in Cuba for "official meetings, cultural engagements, and to witness the signing of a U.S.-Cuba Law Enforcement Memorandum of Understanding (MOU)." Trump, who takes office on Friday, has threatened to scrap a still-fragile detente between the two countries unless Cuba makes further political and economic concessions. |
Hundreds of U.S. Marines land in Norway, irking Russia Posted: 16 Jan 2017 10:07 AM PST Some 300 U.S. Marines landed in Norway on Monday for a six-month deployment, the first time since World War Two that foreign troops have been allowed to be stationed there, in a deployment which has irked Norway's Arctic neighbor Russia. Officials played down any link between the operation and NATO concerns over Russia, but the deployment coincides with the U.S. sending several thousand troops to Poland to beef up its Eastern European allies worried about Moscow's assertiveness. Marines from Camp Lejeune in North Carolina landed a little after 10 am CET (0900 GMT) at a snow-covered Vaernes airport near Trondheim, Norway's third-largest city, where temperatures were reaching -2 degrees Celsius (28 degrees Fahrenheit). |
Britain will not seek 'half in, half out' EU deal: PM May Posted: 16 Jan 2017 03:23 PM PST By Kylie MacLellan LONDON (Reuters) - Britain will not seek a Brexit deal that leaves it "half in, half out" of the European Union, Prime Minister Theresa May will say on Tuesday, according to her office, in a speech setting out her 12 priorities for upcoming divorce talks with the bloc. Media reported May would be less explicit on her plans for the customs union, but that her emphasis on building new trade relationships would make clear Britain could be no longer a member in the way it is now. |

On the campaign trail, the conservative Trump criticized Venezuela's ruling Socialists for oppressing their own people, but Maduro refrained from firing back in his first public comments on the Republican's election win. "He won't be worse than Obama, that's all I dare say. |

Asia stocks and pound sag, May speech awaited for Brexit stance Posted: 16 Jan 2017 04:30 PM PST Asian stocks and the pound sagged on Tuesday ahead of a speech by British Prime Minister Theresa May that could have implications for broader risk sentiment. Media have reported that May, due to speak later on Tuesday, will lay out plan to exit the European Union that would see Britain lose access to the bloc's single market. Growing uncertainty over the policies of Donald Trump have also hurt equities, which had rallied in many parts of the world thanks to speculation that the U.S. President-elect would enact bold stimulus and reflationary measures once in office. |

In a letter to parliamentary speaker Milan Brglez, the Commissioner for Human Rights Nils Muiznieks said amendments that "are contrary to international law and undermine human rights" should be rejected. The changes, expected to be debated in parliament next week, would enable the police to seal the country's borders to most illegal immigrants for a limited period if parliament deemed it necessary for security reasons. |

Costa Rican foreign minister Manuel Gonzalez said Nicaragua had occupied a beach on Isla Calero in northeastern Costa Rica in November 2016, a virtually uninhabited area where both countries have a historic border dispute. "(Nicaragua) has installed a military post in a small strip of that Costa Rican territory. |

The spy who quit? Lovers keep 007 passive smoking risk up Posted: 16 Jan 2017 03:42 PM PST James Bond may have quit smoking 14 years ago, but he remains at high risk from the puffing habits of his many sexual partners, researchers warned Tuesday. Delving into the British spy's on-screen smoking history, a team of public health researchers sought to highlight the tobacco hazards faced by the fictional action hero -- and the real-life people he may have inspired. This "would have meant high levels of secondhand smoke exposure for Bond, especially with post-coital smoking, even to the point where one partner used an ashtray positioned on his naked chest," they said. |

Europeans look past Trump remarks to keep trans-Atlantic alliance alive Posted: 16 Jan 2017 03:15 PM PST By Robin Emmott and Gabriela Baczynska BRUSSELS (Reuters) - If Washington's European allies had any hope that Donald Trump would sound less like Donald Trump now that he is days from the U.S. presidency, his first European newspaper interview quickly buried it. Trump declared the NATO alliance "obsolete", praised Britain's exit from the European Union and gave his clearest hint yet that he would consider lifting financial sanctions on Moscow, which the United States and EU both imposed after Russia seized Ukraine's Crimea peninsula. German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said they had led to "astonishment and agitation" in Brussels, where Steinmeier was meeting EU counterparts. |

A SWAT team entered the prison before midday "to get control of the situation," said Major Eduardo Franco, spokesman for police in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, where the prison is located. By evening, police said the SWAT team gained control of the wing housing members of Brazil's most powerful drug gang, who until nightfall had refused to hand over their weapons and allow police to enter their area. |
Poroshenko says Ukrainians at risk of losing faith in EU path Posted: 16 Jan 2017 02:32 PM PST Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said on Monday Ukrainians risked becoming disillusioned with Ukraine's pro-European path if there are further delays to plans to cement its closer integration with the European Union. The European Union reached an agreement on visa waivers for Ukraine in December, after weeks of stalling, but the decision has yet to come into effect. "To delay further would be flagrantly unfair as Ukraine has paid a high price," Poroshenko told foreign ambassadors to Ukraine. |

Top German court to rule on far-right NPD ban Posted: 16 Jan 2017 02:07 PM PST By Madeline Chambers BERLIN (Reuters) - Germany's Constitutional Court looks likely to reject on Tuesday a historic attempt by the country's 16 federal states to ban the far-right National Democratic Party (NPD), described by the intelligence agency as racist and anti-Semitic, say law experts. This is harder to prove, as the party has failed to capitalize on the refugee crisis, which shows its weakness as a political force while the anti-immigrant Alternative for Germany (AfD) has soared to 15 percent in some polls. "The signs are mounting that the court will not ban the NPD," said Oskar Niedermayer, politics professor at Berlin's Free University. |

Gambia top judge pulls out of inauguration challenge Posted: 16 Jan 2017 01:52 PM PST The Gambia's top judge on Monday pulled out of hearing a bid by President Yahya Jammeh to halt the inauguration of president-elect Adama Barrow later this week, in a blow to the incumbent head of state. The small west African country has been plunged in political turmoil since Jammeh disputed Barrow's December election victory and refused to cede power. Jammeh has lodged a challenge to the election result with The Gambia's Supreme Court and last week filed a fresh injunction to prevent the chief justice from swearing Barrow into office. |
