Pentagon repeats call for China to end island building, seeks more military contact Posted: 11 Jun 2015 04:24 PM PDT By David Brunnstrom WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter met a top Chinese general on Thursday and repeated a U.S. call for a halt to land reclamation in the South China Sea while stressing that the Pentagon remained committed to expanding military contacts with China. In the meeting with General Fan Changlong, a deputy head of China's powerful Central Military Commission, Carter stressed his commitment to developing "a sustained and substantive U.S.-China military-to-military relationship," the Pentagon said. In reiterating U.S. concerns about tensions in the South China Sea, Carter called on China and all rival claimants to halt land reclamation and militarization of disputed territory, and to pursue a peaceful resolution in accordance with international law, the Pentagon statement said. |
U.S. considering more military bases in Iraq: top general Posted: 11 Jun 2015 12:48 PM PDT By Phil Stewart NAPLES, Italy (Reuters) - The United States is considering building more U.S. military bases in Iraq to drive back Islamic State militants in a move that may require a further increase in American forces, the top U.S. general said on Thursday. A day after the White House announced the deployment of 450 more U.S. troops to Iraq and a new training hub in Anbar province, Army General Martin Dempsey said the Pentagon was considering more sites in strategic areas such as the corridor from Baghdad to Tikrit and further north toward Mosul. |
Islamic State says blows up two warplanes at Libya base: video Posted: 11 Jun 2015 03:08 PM PDT By Ayman al-Warfalli BENGHAZI, Libya (Reuters) - The militant group Islamic State's Libya wing released a video on Thursday purportedly showing it blowing up two warplanes at an air base while its fighters paraded heavy weapons in a show of force. The video showed the group's fighters manning a tank, firing a mortar gun and destroying the planes parked in front of a hangar at the base seized by the militants near the central city of Sirte. The authenticity of the video could not be verified. |
Iran envoy declines to commit to nuclear transparency measures Posted: 11 Jun 2015 05:44 AM PDT By Shadia Nasralla VIENNA (Reuters) - Iran's envoy to the U.N. nuclear agency declined on Thursday to commit to nuclear transparency measures that were part of a preliminary deal Tehran and world powers reached in April, deflecting U.S. demands to implement such provisions. The United States urged Iran to implement the so-called Additional Protocol, which allows more intrusive access to Iranian sites, and Code 3.1, which requires from Iran early notification of the construction of any new nuclear facilities. "These are the issues still under discussion and I believe we should wait to see the final text... and before that, we cannot prejudge anything," Reza Najafi told reporters. |
Crunch time coming for Saudi campaign as options narrow in Yemen Posted: 11 Jun 2015 05:48 AM PDT By Angus McDowall NAJRAN, Saudi Arabia (Reuters) - After 11 weeks of air strikes that have failed to change the balance of power in Yemen, Saudi Arabia is running out of options to restore President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi's exiled government to Sanaa. Despite the destruction of much of their heavy weaponry, the Houthi militia and army forces loyal to former president Ali Abdullah Saleh control most of the country's populated west and still daily attack Saudi territory with mortar fire or missiles. The possibility of a ground operation in support of the ragtag local groups still fighting the Houthis in Aden, Taiz, Marib and al-Dhala appears to have been discounted by the Saudis and their allies in an Arab coalition from early on. |
Killings of soldiers and civilians fray Ukraine's ceasefire Posted: 11 Jun 2015 08:50 AM PDT Three civilians and two Ukrainian soldiers were killed in eastern Ukraine within 24 hours up to midday on Thursday, Kiev's military said, further eroding a four-month-old ceasefire in the separatist conflict. The truce brokered by the leaders of Ukraine, Russia, Germany and France has stemmed large-scale fighting but regular skirmishes near Donetsk claim lives almost daily on both sides, and international monitors said they feared a bigger flare-up. The two Ukrainian soldiers were killed and 13 others wounded by pro-Russian separatists using heavy weapons in violation of the February ceasefire, a military spokesman said in Kiev. |

General: New US hub in Iraq could be model Posted: 11 Jun 2015 04:40 PM PDT NAPLES, Italy (AP) — The Pentagon's top general said Thursday the U.S. military's reach could extend even further into Iraq if the anti-Islamic State campaign gains momentum, and he held out the possibility of eventually recommending to President Barack Obama that U.S. troops take on the riskier role of calling in airstrikes. |

Top Asian News at 11:30 p.m. GMT Posted: 11 Jun 2015 04:32 PM PDT BEIJING (AP) — A court sentenced China's former security chief to life in prison Thursday after convicting him of corruption in a secretly held trial, underscoring President Xi Jinping's anti-graft campaign and further cementing Xi's authority by burying a once-powerful political faction. Zhou Yongkang, 72, was spared the death penalty in a decision seen as a show of leniency toward the former Politburo Standing Committee member, the highest-level politician to face court in China in more than three decades. |

Pentagon chief urges China to stop island building Posted: 11 Jun 2015 04:11 PM PDT US Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter called Thursday on Beijing to stop building artificial islands in the disputed waters of the South China Sea, as he hosted a top Chinese general. The visit to the Pentagon of General Fan Changlong, vice chairman of China's Central Military Commission, was relatively low key amid simmering tensions over the maritime dispute and a massive hack of US federal employees. China insists it has sovereignty over nearly all of the South China Sea, a major global shipping route believed to be home to oil and gas reserves, but rival claimants accuse it of expansionism. |

Colombia's FARC rebels step up infrastructure attacks, kill three police Posted: 11 Jun 2015 03:22 PM PDT Colombia's FARC rebels shot dead three police officers on Thursday and brought down an energy pylon, cutting off power to half a million people in the country's south, the military said, as the Marxist group steps up attacks amid stumbling peace talks. Members of the FARC, or the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, opened fire on the three police officers patrolling a stretch of the southwestern Pan-American Highway on Thursday and detonated explosives a few kilometers away on the same road. The 8,000-strong FARC lifted a unilateral ceasefire about three weeks ago and has since hit almost daily at roadways, power networks and crude oil trucks and pipelines, polluting water supplies in the rebels' southwestern stronghold. |

Israel denies spying on Iran talks hotels Posted: 11 Jun 2015 03:11 PM PDT Swiss and Austrian investigators have launched probes into alleged spying in hotels hosting delicate Iranian nuclear talks, with Israel denying Thursday its secret services were involved. The revelation comes in run-up to a June 30 deadline for a historic agreement between Iran and world powers on curtailing Tehran's nuclear programme in return for relief from punishing sanctions, and a day after a Russian-based security firm said a computer worm widely linked to Israel was used to spy on the negotiations. Israel is vehemently opposed to a nuclear deal with Iran, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warning that the accord would not "block Iran's path to the bomb". |
Guatemalan president vows to stay despite graft probe Posted: 11 Jun 2015 03:09 PM PDT Guatemalan President Otto Perez said Thursday he has no plans to resign despite being investigated for corruption and facing the possible lifting of his presidential immunity. Perez, who has faced large protests calling for his resignation in recent weeks, was dealt a new blow Wednesday when the Supreme Court endorsed an opposition party's request to investigate how much he knew about fraud by senior officials in the customs and social security systems. The court also asked Congress to consider lifting his immunity. |

The Arctic Challenger is one of about two dozen support vessels that will accompany drilling rigs slated to resume a search for fossil fuels as soon as next month in the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas, among the world's most ecologically sensitive regions. |
