Gaza fighting flares, UN, Israel debate truce Posted: 28 Jul 2014 11:58 AM PDT By Nidal al-Mughrabi and Crispian Balmer GAZA/JERUSALEM (Reuters) - A grim-faced Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned on Monday of a protracted war in Gaza, dashing any hopes of a swift end to the three-week conflict as Palestinian fighters launched an audacious cross-border raid. The Israeli army said five of its soldiers died in two separate incidents, including four in a mortar strike. Inside Gaza itself, eight children and two adults were killed by a blast in a park as an unofficial truce sought by the United Nations for the Muslim Eid al-Fitr festival collapsed. Residents blamed the explosion on an airstrike, but Israel said a misfiring militant rocket caused the carnage. |
West agrees wider Russia sanctions as Kiev says forces near crash site Posted: 28 Jul 2014 12:58 PM PDT By Gabriela Baczynska and Aleksandar Vasovic KIEV/DONETSK Ukraine (Reuters) - U.S. and European leaders agreed on Monday to impose wider sanctions on Russia's financial, defense and energy sectors as Ukraine said its forces advanced toward the crash site of Malaysian flight MH17. The new sanctions, which U.S. President Barack Obama and leaders of Germany, Britain, France and Italy discussed in a conference call, are aimed at increasing the pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin after the Malaysian airliner was shot down over territory held by pro-Moscow rebels in eastern Ukraine. "It's precisely because we've not yet seen a strategic turn from Putin that we believe it's absolutely essential to take additional measures and that's what the Europeans and the United States intend to do this week," said Tony Blinken, a national security adviser to Obama. |
Iraq lays claim to Kurdish crude cargo in Texas court Posted: 28 Jul 2014 04:26 PM PDT Iraq filed suit on Monday in a Texas court to gain control of a cargo of crude oil from Iraqi Kurdistan that Baghdad says was sold without its permission. The United Kalavrvta tanker, carrying some 1 million barrels of crude worth about $100 million, arrived off the coast of Texas on Saturday but has yet to unload its disputed cargo. The ship, which is too large to enter the port of Galveston near Houston, was given clearance by the U.S. Coast Guard on Sunday to transfer its cargo offshore to smaller boats that would deliver it to the U.S. mainland. Iraq, in its filing in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas, asked for an order allowing the cargo to be seized by the U.S. Marshals Service. |
Huge blaze out of control in Tripoli battle as Libya slides into chaos Posted: 28 Jul 2014 10:01 AM PDT By Patrick Markey and Aziz El Yaakoubi TRIPOLI (Reuters) - A huge fuel depot in Libya's capital burned out of control on Monday, set ablaze in fighting between rival militias that has driven the country to chaos three years after the NATO-backed revolt that toppled Muammar Gaddafi. Combat over control of the nearby airport forced firefighters to withdraw, abandoning their attempts to extinguish the blaze ignited by a missile strike that hit millions of litres of fuel. Western countries have urged their nationals to leave, shut their embassies and pulled diplomats out, after two weeks of clashes among rival factions of former rebels killed nearly 160 people in Tripoli and the eastern city of Benghazi. The Netherlands, the Philippines and Austria on Monday prepared to evacuate diplomatic staff. |
U.S. 'disappointed' Netherlands released Venezuelan wanted over drugs Posted: 28 Jul 2014 03:12 PM PDT By Patricia Zengerle WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States is "deeply disappointed" the Netherlands released a former Venezuelan military intelligence chief detained over U.S. drug trafficking allegations, and is "disturbed" at reports indicating Caracas used threats to obtain his freedom, the State Department said on Monday. Instead of being extradited to the United States, retired Venezuelan General Hugo Carvajal flew home on Sunday from the Netherlands' Caribbean island of Aruba after the Dutch government ruled he had diplomatic immunity. He had been arrested on Aruba on Wednesday. Jubilant Venezuelan officials with the ruling Socialist Party celebrated his release as a "victory" over their ideological foes in the United States. |
U.N. blacklists operator of North Korean ship seized in Panama Posted: 28 Jul 2014 03:20 PM PDT By Michelle Nichols UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - A U.N. Security Council committee on Monday blacklisted the operator of a North Korean ship, which was seized near the Panama Canal last year for smuggling Soviet-era arms, including two MiG-21 jet fighters, under thousands of tonnes of sugar. The North Korea (DPRK) sanctions committee designated Ocean Maritime Management, which operated the Chong Chon Gang, the ship that was detained a year ago. The U.N. designation means the company is now subject to an international asset freeze and travel ban. "Ocean Maritime Management Company, Ltd (OMM), played a key role in arranging the shipment of the concealed cargo of arms and related materiel," the committee said in an implementation assistance notice, obtained by Reuters. |

Obama mulls large-scale move on immigration Posted: 28 Jul 2014 04:37 PM PDT WASHINGTON (AP) — Even as they grapple with an immigration crisis at the border, White House officials are making plans to act before November's mid-term elections to grant work permits to potentially millions of immigrants who are in this country illegally, allowing them to stay in the United States without threat of deportation, according to advocates and lawmakers in touch with the administration. |
NHC says 50 percent chance of cyclone off Cape Verde Islands Posted: 28 Jul 2014 04:37 PM PDT (Reuters) - A storm system located about 850 miles (1,365 km) west-southwest of the Cape Verde Islands has a 50 percent chance of becoming a tropical cyclone during the next 48 hours, the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) said on Monday in its latest update. A tropical depression could form during the next several days while the system moves generally westward or west-northwestward at 10 to 15 miles per hour (16 to 24 km per hour), the Miami-based weather forecaster said. Burundi party's 'relentless' intimdation ahead of polls: Amnesty Posted: 28 Jul 2014 04:32 PM PDT Burundi's ruling party is carrying out a "relentless campaign of intimidation" against opposition and critics, ahead of presidential elections next year, Amnesty International said Tuesday. "The government's clampdown on free expression and peaceful assembly has serious implications for human rights ahead of next year's elections," said Amnesty researcher Tom Gibson. The small nation in Africa's Great Lakes region emerged in 2006 from 13 years of brutal civil war and its political climate remains fractious ahead of presidential polls due in June 2015. |

The 22-year-old Bailey-Cole came back from a poor start to power through in 10.00 seconds, with England's Adam Gemili just edging out Nickel Ashmeade to take second in 10.10secs. |

Brazil farmers say GMO corn no longer resistant to pests Posted: 28 Jul 2014 03:59 PM PDT By Caroline Stauffer SAO PAULO (Reuters) - Genetically modified corn seeds are no longer protecting Brazilian farmers from voracious tropical bugs, increasing costs as producers turn to pesticides, a farm group said on Monday. Producers want four major manufacturers of so-called BT corn seeds to reimburse them for the cost of spraying up to three coats of pesticides this year, said Ricardo Tomczyk, president of Aprosoja farm lobby in Mato Grosso state. Large-scale farming in the bug-ridden tropics has always been a challenge, and now Brazil's government is concerned that planting the same crops repeatedly with the same seed technologies has left the agricultural superpower vulnerable to pest outbreaks and dependent on toxic chemicals. Experts in the United States have also warned about corn production prospects because of a growing bug resistance to genetically modified corn. |
Airlines to push for independent guidance on airspace safety after Ukraine crash Posted: 28 Jul 2014 03:57 PM PDT By Allison Lampert and Allison Martell MONTREAL/TORONTO (Reuters) - Global airlines will push to get "neutral information" on whether to use or avoid airspace over conflict zones at Tuesday's meeting of the U.N. aviation agency and other airline bodies, a European-based airline industry source said. The U.N. agency, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), has invited the heads of the airline industry, airports and the world's air traffic control networks to the Montreal meeting to discuss what needs to be changed to ensure that airliners are flying in secure airspace after the downing of a Malaysian airliner over Ukraine on July 17 took 298 lives. The meeting is likely to hear calls for wider international powers to intervene when a country fails to monitor threats to its airspace. |
California drought dries up plans for historic gold rush celebration Posted: 28 Jul 2014 03:52 PM PDT By Shawn Hubler SACRAMENTO Calif. (Reuters) - California's drought has claimed yet another historic casualty in this parched capital city - the annual heritage celebration known as Gold Rush Days. Staged for the past 15 years by tourism groups who turn the city's Old Sacramento district into a dirt-paved scene from the 1850s, the Labor Day weekend tradition was canceled on Monday due to concerns about water use and fire. Steve Hammond, president and chief executive officer of the Sacramento Convention & Visitors Bureau, said that up to 3,000 gallons of water typically are used daily to dampen the tons of dirt strewn over the streets to create a soft surface for horses, wagons and stunt performers. |

California and Mexico sign pact to fight climate change Posted: 28 Jul 2014 02:44 PM PDT By Rory Carroll SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - California Governor Jerry Brown and Mexican environmental officials signed a pact on Monday aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions, an agreement that could eventually expand the market for carbon credits. The six-page memorandum of understanding calls for cooperation in developing carbon pricing systems and calls on the partners to explore ways to align those systems in the future. "California can't do it alone and with this new partnership with Mexico, we can make real progress on reducing dangerous greenhouse gases," said Governor Brown. California operates a carbon cap-and-trade system, which sets a hard limit on the carbon output from large businesses and requires them to either reduce emissions or purchase credits to meet the target. |
