Top al Qaeda strategist killed in Pakistan Posted: 05 Jun 2012 04:50 PM PDT WASHINGTON/PESHAWAR (Reuters) - A U.S. drone strike in Pakistan killed one of al Qaeda's most powerful figures, the U.S. government said on Tuesday, dealing the biggest in a series of blows to the militant group since the raid that killed founder Osama bin Laden last year. Abu Yahya al-Libi, a veteran militant said to have been a leader of the group's operations, and who survived previous U.S. attacks, was killed in the drone strike early Monday morning on a hideout in North Waziristan in Pakistan's tribal areas, officials said. ... |
Queen Elizabeth gives thanks to end rapturous jubilee party Posted: 05 Jun 2012 11:08 AM PDT LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's Queen Elizabeth waved from her Buckingham Palace balcony to the cheering masses on Tuesday and thanked millions of well-wishers at the end of four days of spectacular Diamond Jubilee celebrations marking her 60th year on the throne. From the biggest flotilla seen on the River Thames for more than three centuries, a star-studded concert and a horse-drawn procession through the capital to street parties in towns, tiny villages and communities up and down the country, the queen said the show of public affection had been "a humbling experience". ... |
Syria bars diplomats, gunships in action Posted: 05 Jun 2012 10:19 AM PDT BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syria's government banned 17 Western diplomats and its helicopter gunships pounded rebels in a coastal province on Tuesday as President Bashar al-Assad defied international pressure to halt his campaign to crush the uprising against his rule. The declaration that ambassadors from the United States, Canada, Turkey and several European countries were unwelcome was retaliation for the expulsion of Syrian envoys from their capitals last week, following the massacre of more than 100 civilians by suspected Assad loyalists. ... |

Police arrested porn actor Luka Rocco Magnotta, 29, in a Berlin Internet cafe on Monday. He faces first-degree murder charges in Canada over the killing of Chinese student Jun Lin, 32, in Montreal. ... |
Nigeria forces say kill 16 Islamists in fire fight Posted: 05 Jun 2012 02:39 PM PDT MAIDUGURI (Reuters) - Nigerian forces shot dead 16 suspected militants in a fire fight with Islamist sect Boko Haram on Tuesday, the military said. A Reuters reporter heard gunfire and explosions echoing through the remote city of Maiduguri, in Nigeria's dry, dusty northeast. Boko Haram, which wants to create an Islamic state in parts of Nigeria, has been blamed for hundreds of bomb and gun attacks on security forces and civilians over the past two years. ... |
Mexico's Pena Nieto stops slide in support: poll Posted: 05 Jun 2012 03:15 PM PDT MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexico's presidential front-runner Enrique Pena Nieto has stopped a recent slide in support, though his leftist rival Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador is still gaining on him, an opinion poll showed on Tuesday. The latest voter survey for the July 1 election by Consulta Mitofsky showed support for Pena Nieto, of the opposition Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), at 35.8 percent, up 0.2 points from a poll published by the firm a week earlier. ... |
Twenty detained as Russia debates protest rules Posted: 05 Jun 2012 01:22 PM PDT MOSCOW (Reuters) - Police detained some 20 activists protesting on Tuesday outside Russia's parliament where deputies debated a Kremlin-backed bill to hike fines for violations during rallies, a proposal the opposition says is aimed at smothering dissent. The controversial bill proposed by the ruling United Russia party following the biggest protests against President Vladimir Putin's 12-year-rule is all but guaranteed to be passed this week by the State Duma lower house. ... |
Defections over tough tactics sting Peru's Humala Posted: 05 Jun 2012 04:26 PM PDT LIMA (Reuters) - Three legislators have quit President Ollanta Humala's Gana Peru party and more departures are possible as his crackdown on anti-mining protests and drift to the right erode his working majority in Congress. The departing lawmakers on Tuesday accused Humala of spurning traditional allies on the left, courting big business and - most importantly - using force instead of mediation to quell vexing social conflicts over the spoils of mineral wealth. ... |
Egyptians protest to reclaim their revolt Posted: 05 Jun 2012 11:59 AM PDT CAIRO (Reuters) - Thousands of Egyptians poured into Cairo's Tahrir Square on Tuesday to reclaim a revolt they say has been hijacked after Hosni Mubarak was jailed for life and his top security officials freed in a sign they say his old guard is still in charge. Although Mubarak was imprisoned on Saturday over the killing of protesters, he escaped the death penalty and senior officers tried with him were acquitted for lack of evidence, so many now believe the deposed leader could win an appeal. ... |
Iran hopeful on atomic talks if "rights" respected Posted: 05 Jun 2012 12:28 PM PDT VIENNA/DUBAI (Reuters) - If the world recognizes Iran's "nuclear rights", negotiations aimed at easing a standoff with the West later this month could have a positive outcome, an adviser to Iran's supreme leader was quoted as saying on Tuesday. But Washington said Iran had to move first to make its nuclear work compatible with international law and demanded it let U.N. inspectors into a military site that the West believes has been used for weapons-related nuclear research. Iran has been under U.N. ... |
