Ukraine protesters and police pull back in contest over president Posted: 16 Feb 2014 11:23 AM PST By Richard Balmforth KIEV (Reuters) - Ukrainian opposition protesters ended a two-month occupation of city hall in Kiev on Sunday and opened a road to limited traffic, meeting an amnesty offer aimed at easing a stand-off over President Viktor Yanukovich's rule. The authorities, for their part, withdrew riot police from a flashpoint district of the capital, near the Dynamo Kiev football stadium, where at least three protesters died in January in violence between ultra-radical activists and police. Apparently accepting that the protesters had met the authorities half-way, the prosecutor's office said in a statement that the amnesty would come into force from Monday. Criminal charges would be dropped against those protesters for violations committed between December 27 and February 2, it said - a period that includes a week of clashes in which six people were killed and hundreds of police and protesters injured. |
Suspected Islamists kill 90 in Nigeria village raid: witnesses Posted: 16 Feb 2014 02:12 PM PST Suspected Islamist fighters killed at least 90 people in an early morning attack on a village in remote northeast Nigeria on Sunday, witnesses said. The Boko Haram gunmen surrounded the village of Izge, near the border with Cameroon, spraying it with bullets, setting off explosions and burning down dozens of houses, they said. "As I am talking to you now, all the dead bodies of the victims are still lying in the streets," resident Abubakar Usman told Reuters by telephone. Another witness, Lawan Madu, said hundreds of residents had fled. |
Lawyers for Egypt's deposed President Mursi stage walk-out Posted: 16 Feb 2014 07:34 AM PST By Michael Georgy CAIRO (Reuters) - Lawyers for deposed Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi withdrew in protest after he appeared in court on Sunday on charges of conspiring with foreign groups to commit terrorist acts in Egypt. Mursi's legal team protested they could not hear their client speak from inside a soundproof glass cage. The judge ordered a lawyer's syndicate to assign 10 lawyers to defend Mursi at the trial's next hearing on February 23. In what they call "the biggest case of conspiracy in the history of Egypt", prosecutors say Mursi's Muslim Brotherhood hatched a "terrorist plan" in 2005 involving the Palestinian Hamas group as well as Shi'ite Iran and its Lebanese ally Hezbollah. |
Hezbollah says will quit Syria if Arabs stop meddling Posted: 16 Feb 2014 02:00 PM PST By Erika Solomon and Laila Bassam BEIRUT (Reuters) - Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah called on Sunday for Arab political forces to "stop the war on Syria," promising that if they left the country alone, his Lebanese Shi'ite group would also withdraw. The three-year-old conflict in Syria has fuelled Sunni-Shi'ite tensions in neighboring Lebanon and across the wider Arab world. "If you want to prevent this region from falling into chaos that will not end for decades, stop the war on Syria," Nasrallah said, addressing all political forces in the Arab world. "Get the fighters out of Syria, let the Syrians reconcile," the leader of the Iranian-backed movement said. |
Two Koreans and Egyptian driver die in Sinai tourist bus blast Posted: 16 Feb 2014 10:38 AM PST By Yasmine Saleh and Shadia Nasralla CAIRO (Reuters) - A bomb on a tourist bus in Egypt's Sinai killed at least two South Koreans and the Egyptian driver on Sunday, army and security sources said, in the first attack on tourists since an army takeover in July spurred an Islamist insurgency. The Interior Ministry said the bus was travelling from St. Catherine's Monastery, a popular tourist destination in the south Sinai, to nearby Israel when it was attacked. Egyptian officials use the word "terrorist" to describe Islamist militants. Al Qaeda-inspired Islamist militants based in the largely lawless Sinai peninsula have stepped up attacks on security forces since army chief Field Marshal Abdel Fattah al-Sisi ousted Islamist President Mohamed Mursi in July after mass protests against his rule. |
Venezuela's Lopez says ready for arrest at Tuesday march Posted: 16 Feb 2014 03:55 PM PST By Eyanir Chinea and Daniel Wallis CARACAS (Reuters) - A Venezuelan opposition leader wanted by police in connection with deadly street protests said on Sunday he would march with his supporters in Caracas on Tuesday, and that he was ready to face arrest if necessary. Authorities accuse Leopoldo Lopez of murder and terrorism in connection with violence around four days of sporadic anti-government protests that have left three people dead and both sides blaming each other for the bloodshed. The demonstrators have vowed to stay in the streets until President Nicolas Maduro resigns, although there is no sign of that happening. "If there is any illegal decision to jail me, then I will accept that decision and that infamous persecution by the state." Tuesday's march would run from Plaza Venezuela to the state prosecutor's office in the city center, Lopez said. |

Obama says Uganda anti-gay bill would be 'step backward' Posted: 16 Feb 2014 04:43 PM PST US President Barack Obama warned Ugandan leader Yoweri Museveni against enacting anti-gay legislation Sunday, calling it a "step backward" that would complicate ties with Kampala. Obama, who was in California for a holiday weekend of golf, issued a strong statement saying he was "deeply disappointed" in the Ugandan leader's apparent plans to move forward with the bill. "We believe that people everywhere should be treated equally, with dignity and respect, and that they should have the opportunity to reach their fullest potential, no matter who they are or whom they love," Obama said in a statement. "That is why I am so deeply disappointed that Uganda will shortly enact legislation that would criminalize homosexuality," he added. |
Britain gets respite from flooding crisis Posted: 16 Feb 2014 04:38 PM PST Britain's flooding crisis eased with the arrival of drier weather following a series of fierce storms, while the government on Monday pledged a £10 million package of support for flood-hit businesses. Despite the drier weather conditions, swathes of Britain remain on high alert as people struggle to protect homes from floodwaters, which are still expected to rise. Britain's Environment Agency (EA) has 16 severe flood warnings in place for the south west and the Thames Valley, with almost 130 flood warnings and 187 flood alerts. Prime Minster David Cameron on Monday announced that small and medium sized firms would have access to £10 million ($16.7 million, 12.2 million euros) in funds from the emergency Business Support Scheme in order to keep trading during the clear up. |
Free Syrian Army fires military chief over leadership 'paralysis' Posted: 16 Feb 2014 04:37 PM PST The rebel Free Syrian Army said Sunday it had fired Selim Idriss as its military chief, citing the "difficulties faced by the Syrian revolution" in its battle with the regime. In a video broadcast on the Internet, the rebel coalition said its military council had decided to replace Idriss with Brigadier General Abdel al-Ilah al-Bachir. Colonel Qassem Saadeddine said the decision was taken due to "the paralysis within the military command these past months" and the need to "restructure". A source inside the Syrian opposition told AFP that Idriss -- who was appointed to the role in December 2012 -- had faced criticism for failings on the battlefield. |

EU halts research, educational talks with Switzerland Posted: 16 Feb 2014 03:39 PM PST By Adrian Croft and Katharina Bart BRUSSELS/ZURICH (Reuters) - The European Union said on Sunday it has postponed negotiations with Switzerland on its participation in multibillion-dollar research and educational schemes in the latest fallout from a shock Swiss vote in favor of immigration curbs. The decision follows Switzerland's announcement that the result of last week's referendum on immigration means that it will not be able to sign a labor market pact with new EU member Croatia on July 1 as planned. European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso has warned that the narrow Swiss vote to restore quotas for migrants from the EU in breach of an accord with Brussels, would have "serious consequences" for relations between the wealthy Alpine nation and the 28-member union surrounding it. In one immediate consequence, the EU's executive Commission said it was postponing talks on Swiss participation in both the EU's 80-billion-euro ($109 billion) Horizon 2020 research program and its 14.7-billion-euro Erasmus+ educational exchange program. |

Asylum seekers injured, arrested after PNG incident: Australia Posted: 16 Feb 2014 03:35 PM PST A number of people seeking asylum in Australia have been injured and some arrested after an overnight "disturbance" at a processing center in nearby Papua New Guinea, Australia's immigration minister said on Monday. Manus Island in impoverished Papua New Guinea hosts a detention center for would-be refugees who have been sent there after trying to get to Australia, often in unsafe boats after paying people smugglers in Indonesia. Papua New Guinea police had arrested "a number of transferees" after the incident, Immigration Minister Scott Morrison said in a statement. Media outlet PNG Edge, quoting an unidentified security guard at the camp, said about 1,000 male asylum seekers had rushed the main gate, with a number of detainees breaking out in the melee before being rounded up. |

The attackers stormed the village in Nigeria's restive northeastern Borno state on Saturday, slaughtering scores of civilians and sending many others fleeing. "A hundred and six people, including an old woman, have been killed by the attackers, suspected to be Boko Haram gunmen," senator Ali Ndume told AFP. The raid took place on Saturday in the mostly Christian village of Izghe in Borno, which has been under emergency rule since May last year in a bid to stop an Islamist rebellion that has claimed thousands of lives since 2009. |
