Pope returns with 12 refugees after visit to Greek island Posted: 16 Apr 2016 09:33 AM PDT By Philip Pullella and Karolina Tagaris LESBOS, Greece (Reuters) - Pope Francis took three families of Syrian refugees back to Rome on Saturday after visiting the frontline of Europe's migrant crisis at a camp in Greece where migrants wept at his feet, kissed his hand and begged for help. At a sprawling fenced complex on the Aegean island of Lesbos, adults and children broke down in tears before the head of the Roman Catholic Church, after their onward journey to Europe was cut short by an EU decision to block a migrant route used by a million people fleeing conflict since early 2015. While borders have now largely been shut for migrants, Francis symbolically took a small group of refugees with him on his aircraft as he left the island after a five-hour visit. |
Thousands evacuated from homes as hunt for Japan quake survivors goes on Posted: 16 Apr 2016 11:51 AM PDT By Minami Funakoshi and Kiyoshi Takenaka TOKYO (Reuters) - Japanese authorities have ordered nearly a quarter of a million people from their homes after a deadly earthquake struck a southern island and the search for survivors went on into the early hours of Sunday amid worsening weather conditions. It was the second major quake to hit Kumamoto province on the island of Kyushu in just over 24 hours. "The wind is expected to pick up and rain will likely get heavier," Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told a government meeting. |
Saudi Arabia could sell off billions in American assets if bill passes: NYT Posted: 16 Apr 2016 12:59 PM PDT The Saudi Arabian government has threatened to sell of hundreds of billions of dollars' worth of American assets should the U.S. Congress pass a bill that could hold the kingdom responsible for any role in the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, the New York Times reported on Friday. In September a U.S. judge dismissed claims against Saudi Arabia by families of victims of the attacks, saying that the kingdom had sovereign immunity from damage claims by the families and from insurers that covered losses suffered by building owners and businesses. |
Syria's Aleppo hit by government air strikes and rebel rockets Posted: 16 Apr 2016 09:26 AM PDT Government air strikes hit rebel-held areas of Aleppo on Saturday as rockets fired by insurgents pounded neighborhoods under state control, part of escalating violence in northern Syria that has undermined a truce agreement. The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which monitors the five-year-long war, said air strikes had targeted at least four parts of Aleppo. The Observatory said three people had been killed in the rebel bombardment of government-held areas of the city. |

U.S. sends nine Yemeni prisoners from Guantanamo Bay to Saudi Arabia Posted: 16 Apr 2016 03:33 PM PDT By Matt Spetalnick WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States on Saturday transferred nine Yemeni men to Saudi Arabia from the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo, including an inmate who had been on a hunger strike since 2007, under a long-sought diplomatic deal between Washington and Riyadh, U.S. officials said. The transfer, which took place just days before President Barack Obama's visit to Saudi Arabia for a summit of Gulf Arab allies, marked the latest step in his final push to close the controversial detention center at the U.S. naval base in Cuba before he leaves office in January 2017. The Saudis agreed, after lengthy negotiations that at one point involved Obama and Saudi King Salman, to take the nine Yemenis for resettlement and put them through a government-run rehabilitation program that seeks to reintegrate militants into society, the officials said. |

UN weighs options for Burundi police force Posted: 16 Apr 2016 04:06 PM PDT Calling the situation in Burundi "alarmingly precarious," UN chief Ban Ki-moon is proposing three options for a new UN police mission there, ranging from a full force of 3,000 officers to a light dispatch of 20 to 50. The options were detailed in a report to the Security Council obtained by AFP on Saturday, two weeks after the council agreed to send a police force to the African country to help quell a year of violence there. A second option, he said, would be to send 228 UN police officers to work with human rights officials and possibly with African Union monitors to provide early warning, but it would not offer any protection to civilians. |

Wall through Brazil's capital shows impeachment divide Posted: 16 Apr 2016 03:32 PM PDT By Stephen Eisenhammer BRASILIA (Reuters) - The wide open spaces of Brazil's futuristic capital were hailed as a sign of the vast, fast-growing country's optimism for the future when it was inaugurated in 1960. Now a steel barricade 2 meters (6.6 feet) high runs like a scar down Brasilia's central esplanade outside Congress to stop a divided people from coming to blows. The barrier, which is 1 km (0.6-mile) long, will separate rival demonstrators on Sunday when Congress votes whether to impeach leftist leader President Dilma Rousseff on charges of manipulating budget accounts. |

Syria rebel group slams Geneva talks, opposition body Posted: 16 Apr 2016 03:22 PM PDT A Syrian rebel group on Saturday said United Nations-led peace talks had so far been extremely negative and criticized opposition negotiators as divorced from a deteriorating military situation on the ground. The statement from Ahrar al-Sham, an Islamist group and one of the biggest rebel factions involved in the conflict, indicates the pressure facing the opposition High Negotiations Committee as it takes part in a second round of indirect talks with the government in Geneva. The talks appear to be making no progress toward ending the five-year-long war that has killed more than 250,000 people, while a military escalation has stretched to breaking point a truce agreement brokered by the United States and Russia. |

Posted: 16 Apr 2016 01:49 PM PDT OZU, Japan (AP) — The wooden home barely withstood the first earthquake. An even stronger one the next night dealt what might have been the final blow — if not to the house, then to the Tanaka family's peace of mind. The Tanakas joined about 50 other residents of the southern Japanese town of Ozu who were planning to sleep in their cars at a public park Saturday after two nights of increasingly terrifying earthquakes that have killed 41 people and injured about 1,500, flattened houses and triggered major landslides. "I don't think we can go back there. Our life is in limbo," said 62-year-old Yoshiaki Tanaka, as other evacuees served rice balls for dinner. |
