Turkey's Erdogan warns Russia not to 'play with fire' Posted: 27 Nov 2015 12:11 PM PST By Daren Butler and Maria Tsvetkova ISTANBUL/MOSCOW (Reuters) - Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan warned Russia on Friday not to "play with fire", citing reports Turkish businessmen had been detained in Russia, while Moscow said it would suspend visa-free travel with Turkey. Relations between the former Cold War antagonists are at their lowest in recent memory after Turkey shot down a Russian jet near the Syrian border on Tuesday. Russia has threatened economic retaliation, a response Erdogan has dismissed as emotional and indecorous. |
Voice of Paris attacks; Did he have bigger role? Posted: 27 Nov 2015 11:54 AM PST By Chine Labbé and Marie-Louise Gumuchian PARIS/ALENCON, France (Reuters) - The voice that claimed Islamic State was responsible for the deadly Paris attacks is known to many in the small French provincial town of Alencon. To family, Fabien Clain was a "big teddy bear", to neighbors he was polite and at the local mosque he was a fellow worshipper who came to pray. To the French authorities, he was a veteran jihadi jailed once in the past for recruiting militant fighters and believed by them to have fled to Syria this year. |
Merkel under pressure from her own ahead of EU migration summit Posted: 27 Nov 2015 12:24 PM PST Chancellor Angela Merkel came under renewed pressure from her own conservatives on Friday to stem the flow of refugees into Germany as she heads to a weekend summit of European Union leaders and Turkey's prime minister. Roughly a million refugees and migrants fleeing war and deprivation in the Middle East, Africa and Asia are expected to arrive in Germany this year alone - the majority of those reaching Europe - and local authorities are struggling to cope. Merkel has faced intense pressure from her own conservative Christian Democrats (CDU) and their Bavarian sister party, the Christian Social Union (CSU), to change course on her open-door refugee policy. |
Ringleader of Paris attacks planned more strikes, mocked open borders Posted: 27 Nov 2015 01:34 PM PST The ringleader behind the Nov. 13 attacks in Paris had plans to strike Jewish targets and to disrupt schools and the transport system in France, according to sources close to the investigation. Abdelhamid Abaaoud, a Belgian national of Moroccan origin, also boasted of the ease with which he had re-entered Europe from Syria via Greece two months earlier, exploiting the confusion of the migrant crisis and the continent's passport-free Schengen system, the sources said on Friday. The witness statement, quoted in the Valeurs Actuelles weekly magazine, describes how Abaaoud approached his cousin Hasna Ait Boulahcen two days after the killing spree asking her to hide him while he prepared further attacks. |

Posted: 27 Nov 2015 04:37 PM PST NEW DELHI (AP) — Gunmen attacked a Shiite mosque in Bangladesh, killing one person and wounding three others, in the latest in a wave of deadly assaults this year on foreigners, secular writers and members of the Shiite community in the Sunni-majority nation. Leicester striker Vardy will make history at the King Power Stadium if he scores for a Premier League record 11th successive match and his prolific form has played a major role in the Foxes' remarkable climb to the top. With 13 league goals this season, Vardy has scored more than all of United's strikers combined and fittingly it is former Old Trafford great Ruud van Nistelrooy whose record he will break if he finds the net this weekend. |
