Preventing Iran bomb more important than past nuclear activity: Kerry Posted: 04 Dec 2015 06:59 AM PST U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said on Friday that preventing Iran developing a nuclear weapon in future was more important now than "ambiguities" about its past military efforts. Kerry said it would be premature to comment on a leaked report by the U.N. atomic watchdog that strongly suggested Tehran had a nuclear weapons program for years until 2003, since deliberations were not completed. From the get-go, we have consistently said we know that Iran was pursuing a nuclear project." What really mattered now, Kerry said, was "making certain that none of whatever happened in the past can happen going forward into the future". |

"Turkish soldiers have reached the Mosul Bashiqa region. |
Uncertainty deepens over Afghan Taliban leader Posted: 04 Dec 2015 01:20 PM PST By Jibran Ahmed PESHAWAR, Pakistan (Reuters) - Uncertainty over the fate of Afghan Taliban leader Mullah Akhtar Mansour deepened on Friday, as speculation grew over a possible successor, despite repeated denials by the spokesman of the Islamist movement that he had been badly wounded in a gunfight. Several sources in the Taliban have said that Mansour, whose claim to the leadership is rejected by rival factions, was seriously wounded and possibly killed in a shootout at the house of another Taliban leader near Quetta in Pakistan on Tuesday. According to one senior Taliban commander, who said that Mansour had died of his wounds on Thursday, Sheikh Haibatullah Akhundzada, one of Mansour's two deputies, is poised to take over the leadership. |

Israel trained against Russian-made air defense system in Greece: sources Posted: 04 Dec 2015 06:30 AM PST By Dan Williams and Karolina Tagaris JERUSALEM/ATHENS (Reuters) - Israel has quietly tested ways of defeating an advanced air-defence system that Russia has deployed in the Middle East and that could limit Israel's ability to strike in Syria or Iran, military and diplomatic sources said. The activation allowed Israel's warplanes to test how the S-300's lock-on system works, gathering data on its powerful tracking radar and how it might be blinded or bluffed. One defense source in the region said Greece had done so at the request of the United States, Israel's chief ally, on at least one occasion in the past year. |

The US military swept into Panama on December 20, 1989 with the stated aims of upholding human rights, protecting Americans living there, curbing drug trafficking, and to ensure the neutrality of the Panama Canal. |

Posted: 04 Dec 2015 04:26 PM PST WASHINGTON (AP) — The United States is preparing to amend sanctions on Myanmar after banks complained they can't finance trade that goes through the nation's main port terminal because it is run by a blacklisted business tycoon. State Department officials have been sounding out Congress about remedial policies, which an administration official said could take effect as early as next week. The administration is keen to promote economic growth with the country also known as Burma, which recently held landmark elections, but its fix could draw criticism from U.S. lawmakers and human rights groups. It would mean giving the green light to banks to process transactions related to trade that passes through a container port terminal in the main city of Yangon that is run by Steven Law, the son of a deceased heroin kingpin. |

The Russian defense ministry claimed this week that it has proof Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan and his family were benefitting from smuggling oil from Islamic State-held territory. Liberal leader Justin Trudeau won a parliamentary majority in the Oct. 19 election promising to return Canada back into deficit in order to support an economy suffering from low prices for oil and other commodities.
