Ukraine fears spread of war after blast in eastern city Posted: 22 Feb 2015 09:40 AM PST By Anton Zverev and Vitaly Gnidy NIZHNYAYA KRYNKA/KHARKIV, Ukraine (Reuters) - Ukraine said on Sunday it feared unrest could spread beyond territory held by pro-Russian separatists, after an explosion killed two people at a memorial rally in an eastern city far from the front line. Kiev said it arrested four people who had been armed and trained in Russia after the blast, which killed a policeman and a demonstrator at the rally in Kharkiv, the biggest city in the east, 200 km (125 miles) from the war zone. A week after a ceasefire agreement that Moscow-backed rebels ignored to capture a strategic town, Kiev and its Western allies are trying to determine whether the separatists will now halt, or advance deeper into territory the Kremlin calls "New Russia". |
Tough choice for U.S. in Afghanistan's Kandahar province Posted: 22 Feb 2015 03:46 PM PST By Phil Stewart KANDAHAR AIR FIELD, Afghanistan (Reuters) - A once bustling military hub at the heart of America's war in southern Afghanistan, Kandahar Air Field seemed destined to quietly shut down this year as part of a U.S. withdrawal that had already thinned its numbers. New U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter visited the sprawling complex on Sunday, but kept reporters guessing whether he thought it should remain operational longer - keeping a U.S. toe-hold in an important region of Afghanistan. The prospect of exiting Kandahar altogether has sounded alarms in Washington, where Republican lawmakers critical of President Barack Obama's withdrawal strategy note the region's importance to Taliban militants and the threat they pose. "Kandahar is just not a spot on the map. |
Kerry and Iran's Zarif meet for two hours in nuclear talks Posted: 22 Feb 2015 03:23 PM PST By Lesley Wroughton GENEVA (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif met for two hours in Geneva on Sunday in another round of nuclear talks to try to narrow gaps as they pressed against a March 31 deadline to reach a political agreement. The meeting included for the first time U.S. Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz and Iran's nuclear chief Ali Akbar Salehi, who spent most of the day separately negotiating technical details of curbing Iran's nuclear program. Some Western countries, the United States in particular, see sanctions as an asset, a lever to exert pressure on Iran. As long as this thinking persists it will be very hard, difficult to reach a settlement." Zarif said the inclusion of Moniz and Salehi reflected a need "for higher level people with all-embracing command over all issues." The presence of a close aide and the brother of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, Hossein Fereydoon, meant better "coordination with the president," he added. |
Bangladesh ferry capsizes after collision, at least 66 dead Posted: 22 Feb 2015 04:55 PM PST By Serajul Quadir DHAKA (Reuters) - At least 66 people died when a passenger ferry carrying more than 150 passengers and crew capsized after colliding with a trawler on a river in central Bangladesh on Sunday, police said. Rescuers managed to save at least 50 passengers and were still searching for more survivors, regional police official Harun-ur Rashid told Reuters on Monday. Low-lying Bangladesh, with extensive inland waterways and slack safety standards, suffers regular ferry disasters, with deaths sometimes running into the hundreds. Rescuers from the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority and Red Cross were still searching the river. |
Turkish military enters Syria to evacuate soldiers, relocate tomb Posted: 22 Feb 2015 11:56 AM PST By Orhan Coskun ANKARA (Reuters) - Turkish forces swept into Syria overnight to rescue about 40 soldiers who had been surrounded for months by Islamic State militants while guarding the tomb of a revered Turkish figure. The Syrian government described the operation as an act of "flagrant aggression" and said it would hold Ankara responsible for its repercussions. The action, which involved tanks, drones and reconnaissance planes as well as several hundred ground troops, was the first incursion by Turkish troops into Syria since the start of the civil war there nearly four years ago. The 38 soldiers who had been guarding the tomb of Suleyman Shah, grandfather of the founder of the Ottoman Empire, were brought safely home. |
Hong Kong 'radicals' up ante in democracy push against China Posted: 22 Feb 2015 01:11 PM PST By James Pomfret and Clare Baldwin HONG KONG (Reuters) - Nearly three months after police cleared away the last of Hong Kong's pro-democracy street protests, lingering anger is stoking a new front of radical activism that has turned shopping malls and university campuses into a fresh battleground. While still relatively few in number, a cluster of outspoken groups have staged small but disruptive protests in recent weeks targeting mainland Chinese visitors - tapping a seam of grassroots resentment to call for greater Hong Kong nationalism and even independence from China. "Go back to China," protesters shouted at visitors, including an elderly Chinese woman who fled with her trolleyload of shopping. A pro-Beijing newspaper, Wen Wei Po, thundered that the "radicals", some of whom waved a British colonial flag, were "inciting the foul culture of Hong Kong independence". |

Syrian Kurds attack Islamic State in northeast Posted: 22 Feb 2015 02:49 PM PST By Tom Perry BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syrian Kurdish forces advanced against Islamic State fighters in two separate attacks in northeastern Syria near the Iraqi border on Sunday, an organization tracking the war reported, compounding recent losses for the militant group in Syria. The Kurdish YPG militia has been one of Islamic State's toughest enemies in Syria and last month flushed the group out of the town of Kobani with the help of U.S. and allied air support and Iraqi Kurdish reinforcements on the ground. Hasaka province in the northeastern corner of Syria is strategically important in the fight against Islamic State because it borders areas controlled by the group in Iraq. |

The Damascus government, which no longer controls the area in Aleppo province but is at loggerheads with Ankara over the Syria conflict, lashed out at what it described as a "flagrant aggression" on Syrian territory. Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said the mission had succeeded, with the soldiers returning safely home and also salvaging the tomb containing the remains of Suleyman Shah, grandfather of the Ottoman empire's founder, Osman I. A Turkish government official confirmed to AFP that the mission was the first incursion Turkish troops had launched inside Syria since the civil war began in 2011. |

Maverick Hungarian PM Orban suffers by-election blow Posted: 22 Feb 2015 01:01 PM PST Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban lost his two-thirds majority in parliament in a key by-election on Sunday that could trigger a further slide in the maverick premier's popularity. Orban's right-wing Fidesz party and its junior coalition partners, the Christian Democrats, have ruled Hungary with an all-powerful two-thirds majority since 2010. In elections last year, the parties retained the super-majority by one seat in the 199-seat parliament. The so-called super-majority however came to an end as voters in Veszprem, a traditionally conservative town southwest of the capital Budapest, chose independent candidate Zoltan Kesz, supported by opposition leftist parties, with 43.1 percent of the votes over Fidesz's local man, Lajos Nemedi who received 33.4 percent. |
