Energized by drug case, Venezuela opposition keeps focus on vote

Posted: 12 Nov 2015 04:51 PM PST

By Andrew Cawthorne CARACAS (Reuters) - Adversaries of President Nicolas Maduro can barely disguise their glee at the U.S. drug arrest of two of his family members, but they are focused on legislative elections next month as their best hope of weakening his grip on power. Amid a series of U.S. probes into alleged cocaine smuggling and money-laundering by officials and others connected to Venezuela's socialist government, two nephews of Maduro's wife were indicted in New York on Thursday for alleged cocaine smuggling after being arrested in Haiti. Sinjar battle could give momentum to Obama's Islamic State strategy

Posted: 12 Nov 2015 04:48 PM PST

By Jonathan Landay and Warren Strobel WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S.-backed drive by Iraqi Kurds to wrest the northern town of Sinjar and a slice of strategic highway from Islamic State could give new momentum to the Obama administration's strategy to defeat the extremist group, U.S. officials and analysts said on Thursday. The long-awaited Sinjar offensive is one of several signs, the officials argued, that U.S. President Barack Obama's much-criticized, slow-burn strategy against Islamic State in both Iraq and Syria is starting to produce results. It coincides with a renewed push by Washington to find a diplomatic solution to the Syrian civil war, which U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said on Thursday would hinge partly on perceptions of which military forces were gaining the upper hand.

Monsanto's Roundup weedkiller atomizers are displayed for sale at a garden shop at Bonneuil-Sur-Marne near ParisBy Barbara Lewis BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Glyphosate is unlikely to cause cancer in humans, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) said on Thursday, and the agency proposed a higher limit on the daily amount of residue of the popular weed killer deemed safe if consumed. The EFSA advises EU policymakers and its conclusion could lead the 28-member European Union to renew approval for glyphosate, which was brought into use by Monsanto Co in the 1970s and is used in its top-selling product Roundup as well as in many other herbicides around the world. Environmental groups have been calling for a ban after the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), part of the World Health Organization, said in March that glyphosate was "probably carcinogenic to humans".
