Two suicide bombers hit Hezbollah bastion in Lebanon, 43 killed Posted: 12 Nov 2015 01:26 PM PST By Mariam Karouny and Laila Bassam BEIRUT (Reuters) - At least 43 people were killed and more than 240 wounded on Thursday in two suicide bomb blasts claimed by Islamic State in a crowded residential district in Beirut's southern suburbs, a stronghold of the Shi'ite Muslim group Hezbollah. The explosions were the first attacks in more than a year to target a Hezbollah stronghold inside Lebanon, and came at time when the group is stepping up its involvement in the Syrian civil war -- a fight which has brought Sunni Islamist threats and invective against the Iran-backed Shi'ite group. Hezbollah has sent hundreds of fighters to support Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's forces in the four-year-old conflict over the border. |
Kurds expect to enter and clear Sinjar soon Posted: 12 Nov 2015 02:19 PM PST By Isabel Coles NEAR SINJAR TOWN, Iraq (Reuters) - Kurdish forces who have launched an offensive to retake Sinjar from Islamic State militants expect to enter and clear the northern Iraqi town soon, the Kurdistan regional security council said on Thursday. More than 150 square km (58 square miles) have been seized from the ultrahardline Sunni group and dozens of bodies of its fighters were left behind in a retreat from parts of Sinjar, it added. Backed by U.S.-led coalition air strikes, Kurdish peshmerga fighters reached Sinjar from the east and west, the council said. |
U.S. bombers flew near China-built island in South China Sea: Pentagon Posted: 12 Nov 2015 02:35 PM PST By Yeganeh Torbati and David Alexander WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Two U.S. B52 strategic bombers flew near artificial Chinese-built islands in the South China Sea this week and were contacted by Chinese ground controllers but continued their mission undeterred, the Pentagon said on Thursday. The latest U.S. patrol in the disputed South China Sea occurred in advance of President Barack Obama's visit to the region next week to attend Asia-Pacific summits where he is expected the reassert Washington's commitment to freedom of navigation and overflight in the area. China claims most of the South China Sea, through which more than $5 trillion in global trade passes every year, and the United States has said it will continue conducting patrols to assure unimpeded passage. |
Canadian church wants new PM to help free pastor detained in North Korea Posted: 12 Nov 2015 01:53 PM PST One of Canada's largest churches said on Thursday it wants new Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to bring attention to the case of its pastor detained in North Korea when he meets with Asian leaders next week in Manila. Trudeau, who ousted the nine-year-old government of former prime minister Stephen Harper last month, is under pressure to advance a multitude of issues as he embarks on his first global trip as Canada's new leader, including the case of Rev. Hyeon Soo Lim. Lim, head of the 3,000-member Light Korean Presbyterian Church in Toronto, was detained during a humanitarian trip to North Korea in February, and in July confessed to crimes aimed at overthrowing the state. |
U.S. agencies say not invited to join Egypt probe into Russian plane crash Posted: 12 Nov 2015 03:58 PM PST By Mark Hosenball WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Neither the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) nor the FBI have been invited to join the Egyptian-led investigation into the crash of a Russian airliner in the Sinai Peninsula late last month, officials at the two U.S. agencies said on Thursday. Representatives for the FBI said that the bureau had offered both Egyptian and Russian crash investigators forensic assistance and other investigative help, but as of Thursday its offers had not been accepted. An NTSB spokesman said that for the last several days his agency had been answering technical questions from Egyptian crash investigators on an informal basis. |
Central African government reassures Vatican over pope visit Posted: 12 Nov 2015 03:28 PM PST Political and religious leaders in Central African Republic on Thursday sought to assure the Vatican that the pope would be safe when he visited on Nov. 28-29 as the United Nations also prepared to add troops. Pope Francis will visit the country amid intensifying violence in a two-year conflict that has pitted mostly Muslim rebels against Christian militias, killing dozens in the capital Bangui since late September. Francis hinted in a speech on Nov. 1 that his trip to Central African Republic could be canceled if violence worsens. |
Energized by drug case, Venezuela opposition keeps focus on vote Posted: 12 Nov 2015 04:51 PM PST By Andrew Cawthorne CARACAS (Reuters) - Adversaries of President Nicolas Maduro can barely disguise their glee at the U.S. drug arrest of two of his family members, but they are focused on legislative elections next month as their best hope of weakening his grip on power. Amid a series of U.S. probes into alleged cocaine smuggling and money-laundering by officials and others connected to Venezuela's socialist government, two nephews of Maduro's wife were indicted in New York on Thursday for alleged cocaine smuggling after being arrested in Haiti. Opposition parties demanded a government probe into the case, which they said substantiated long-standing accusations that government and military officials have colluded with drug gangs. |

Sinjar battle could give momentum to Obama's Islamic State strategy Posted: 12 Nov 2015 04:48 PM PST By Jonathan Landay and Warren Strobel WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S.-backed drive by Iraqi Kurds to wrest the northern town of Sinjar and a slice of strategic highway from Islamic State could give new momentum to the Obama administration's strategy to defeat the extremist group, U.S. officials and analysts said on Thursday. The long-awaited Sinjar offensive is one of several signs, the officials argued, that U.S. President Barack Obama's much-criticized, slow-burn strategy against Islamic State in both Iraq and Syria is starting to produce results. It coincides with a renewed push by Washington to find a diplomatic solution to the Syrian civil war, which U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said on Thursday would hinge partly on perceptions of which military forces were gaining the upper hand. |

Monarch butterfly count expected to rebound in Mexico Posted: 12 Nov 2015 04:44 PM PST By Noe Torres SAN MATEO ALMOMOLOA, Mexico (Reuters) - After a staggering decline over the past two decades, the population of the iconic monarch butterfly is expected to recover following coordinated efforts across North American governments, Mexico's environment minister said on Thursday. The monarchs, unique among butterflies for the length of their annual migration, are a major tourist draw to the temperate forests of central Mexico where millions hunker down for the winter. During the current season, which started earlier this month, authorities expect up to a four-fold increase of the delicate-winged insects in the pine and fir forests of central Mexico, where they arrive after a nearly 2,500-mile (4,000-km) journey that stretches as far north as Canada. |

European scientists say weedkiller glyphosate unlikely to cause cancer Posted: 12 Nov 2015 04:24 PM PST By Barbara Lewis BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Glyphosate is unlikely to cause cancer in humans, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) said on Thursday, and the agency proposed a higher limit on the daily amount of residue of the popular weed killer deemed safe if consumed. The EFSA advises EU policymakers and its conclusion could lead the 28-member European Union to renew approval for glyphosate, which was brought into use by Monsanto Co in the 1970s and is used in its top-selling product Roundup as well as in many other herbicides around the world. Environmental groups have been calling for a ban after the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), part of the World Health Organization, said in March that glyphosate was "probably carcinogenic to humans". |

Flores, Venezuela's first lady and 'first fighter' Posted: 12 Nov 2015 04:06 PM PST Flores, 59, has been engulfed by controversy after two of her nephews were arrested in Haiti and handed over to US authorities, who charged them Thursday with conspiring to smuggle cocaine into the United States. A lawyer by training, Flores rose to prominence in 1992 when she worked on the team that defended Chavez after a failed coup attempt that landed the then-paratroop officer in jail. By the time Chavez came to power through the ballot box seven years later, Flores was part of the leftist firebrand's inner circle -- though this was "more for her loyalty than for the quality of her political work," said Yoel Acosta Chirinos, a retired army officer who was one of Chavez's co-conspirators in the 1992 coup attempt. |

Pierre Pallardy, known as France's "osteopath to the stars" has consistently denied the accusations, arguing that the plaintiffs had misinterpreted his "powerful" therapeutic methods, which he claimed could bring repressed memories of sexual violence to the surface. In delivering its final ruling on appeal, the court confirmed that Pallardy was guilty of raping four patients and sexually assaulting three others, but he was acquitted of similar charges brought by the remaining five plaintiffs. |
