Top Asian News at 1:00 a.m. GMT Posted: 02 Nov 2014 05:02 PM PST WASHINGTON (AP) — Big Republican gains on Election Day would be a blow to much of President Barack Obama's agenda, but one stymied item on his to-do list might get a fresh chance to move forward: trade. That could breathe life into Asia-Pacific trade talks essential to his efforts to deepen engagement in the region. Obama needs special authority, known as fast track, to negotiate trade deals that Congress can accept or reject, but cannot change. It would smooth the way for the Trans-Pacific Partnership, which is under discussion with 11 nations, and help advance separate negotiations with the 28-member European Union. |

Miner's son, Lenin fan set to win separatist Ukraine votes Posted: 02 Nov 2014 04:25 PM PST Two pro-Russian separatists were confirmed as leaders in controversial elections in eastern Ukraine on Sunday -- one a rebel chief who highlights his status as a miner's son and the other a fan of Communist icon Vladimir Lenin. Alexander Zakharchenko, who commands rebels fighting Ukrainian government forces in the mining and industrial town of Donetsk, faced no real opposition, taking 81 percent of the vote according to rebel election officials. His ambition, he said in a pre-vote meeting with students, "is to build a new state that will become legitimate after elections and get back the territories in the east (of Ukraine) that are now under control of the Ukrainians." The 38-year-old businessman turned warlord says he sold his business to finance the rebels and took part in the storming of the regional administration building in Donetsk on April 16. |

Troops moved into Place de la Nation in the capital Ouagadougou and took over the national television headquarters in a show of force, despite calls by the international community and protesters for a return to civilian rule. The military had stepped into the power vacuum left by president Blaise Compaore, who was forced to resign in the wake of violent street demonstrations over his 27-year-rule of the impoverished country that some have likened to the Arab Spring. "What is currently at stake is more than self interest," it said in a statement issued after Isaac Zida -- the man it named as interim chief -- met with opposition leaders. |
