Egypt’s example of cross-faith goodwill Posted: 11 Apr 2017 01:50 PM PDT As it loses ground elsewhere in the Middle East, the Islamic State (ISIS) has stepped up terrorist attacks in Egypt, the Arab world's most populous country but also home to the region's largest Christian community. The latest attack was the killing of 45 people at two Christian churches on Palm Sunday. ISIS seems intent on sparking a religious conflict between Egypt's majority Muslims and minority Christians. |
Presidential hopeful Fillon's staying power highlights France's conservative face Posted: 11 Apr 2017 01:40 PM PDT As a deeply devout Catholic, François le Forestier takes the "fake jobs" scandal engulfing France's conservative presidential candidate personally, not just politically. US-Russia diplomacy: Why one airstrike does not leverage make Posted: 11 Apr 2017 09:05 AM PDT Secretary of State Rex Tillerson arrives in Moscow Tuesday with an unexpected card in his hand – after the US airstrike in Syria last week signaled President Trump's willingness to use military force to address egregious and deadly infractions of international norms. The Russians now know they are no longer dealing with the cautious, cool, and intervention-resistant Barack Obama. No longer can Moscow simply string along US diplomatic overtures – as it did former Secretary of State John Kerry's efforts last year to negotiate a humanitarian cease-fire to halt the gruesome siege of Aleppo – knowing there are no American teeth to worry about. |

Wells Fargo’s recovery from a costly scandal Posted: 10 Apr 2017 01:52 PM PDT Six months after Wells Fargo bank was heavily fined for creating nearly 2 million fake bank and credit-card accounts without customer permission, its board released a report Monday on the causes of the costly scandal. The main conclusion: Senior managers failed to detect the unethical practices of employees, many of whom felt pressure from certain managers to meet unrealistic sales targets. In addition, former chief executive officer John Stumpf did not critically challenge corrupt practices for more than a decade. |
