On eve of defining British EU referendum, rivals race for final votes Posted: 22 Jun 2016 03:54 PM PDT By Guy Faulconbridge, Michael Holden and David Milliken LONDON (Reuters) - British Prime Minister David Cameron and his eurosceptic opponents made final pitches for wavering voters on Wednesday on the eve of a defining referendum on European Union membership with the outcome still too close to call. The vote, which echoes the rise of populism elsewhere in Europe and the United States, will shape the continent's future. Most pollsters said the result was too close to predict, and would depend on turnout on the day and any late swing among the substantial number of undecided voters. |
North Korea leader says missile gives ability to attack U.S. in Pacific Posted: 22 Jun 2016 03:40 PM PDT North Korea leader Kim Jong Un said after supervising the test launch of a "medium long-range strategic ballistic missile" that the country came to possess "the sure capability to attack" U.S. interests in the Pacific, official media reported on Thursday. The second reached a high altitude in the direction of Japan before plunging into the sea about 400 km (250 miles) away, they said. South Korea and the United States condemned the launch as an unacceptable violation of U.N. Security Council resolutions. |
U.S. warns China against provocations once court rules on sea claims Posted: 22 Jun 2016 03:43 PM PDT By David Brunnstrom and Matt Spetalnick WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States warned China on Wednesday against taking "additional provocative actions" following an impending international court ruling on the South China Sea that is expected to largely reject Beijing's broad territorial claims. A senior State Department official voiced skepticism at China's claim that dozens of countries backed its position in a case the Philippines has brought against Beijing and vowed that Washington would uphold U.S. defense commitments. Colin Willett, deputy assistant secretary of state for East Asia, said Washington had "a lot of options" to respond to any such Chinese moves in a region she said was vital to U.S. interests. |
Killing of British lawmaker was 'an act of terror', says husband Posted: 22 Jun 2016 09:53 AM PDT By William James LONDON (Reuters) - The widower of murdered British lawmaker Jo Cox said her killing was an act of terror as he paid tribute to his late wife on Wednesday alongside hundreds of mourners at an emotional memorial in London's Trafalgar Square. It was an act of terror designed to advance an agenda of hatred towards others," Brendan Cox said in a tearful speech to a large crowd packed into the London landmark. "What a beautiful irony it is that an act designed to advance hatred has instead generated such an outpouring of love." The vigil marking what would have been her 42nd birthday, and also attended by Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai, fell silent at 1518 GMT (1118 EDT) in a mark of respect also observed at other events across the country and around the world including in Beirut, Brussels, Melbourne, Nairobi, New York and Washington. |

The painstaking process of validating the signatures began earlier this week. The electoral council has required that those who signed for a recall vote against the 53-year-old president return to polling stations to verify their signatures through fingerprint detection. |

Posted: 22 Jun 2016 05:09 PM PDT SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea endured international humiliation with five failed launches in about two months before it finally pulled off what appears to be a successful test of a powerful new midrange missile. Scientists managed to satisfy a direct order from an impatient strongman looking for a credible military backup to his repeated threats to strike his enemies in all corners of Asia. The latest development came Wednesday, with back-to-back launches of what Seoul, Tokyo and Washington believe are Musudan missiles, the second of which appeared to succeed. The North's remarkable commitment to quickly launching the missiles, despite the failures, flies in the face of past practices, when scientists usually took their time after a bad launch to figure out what went wrong and make adjustments. |

Kim, who personally monitored Wednesday's Musudan missile test, said it was a "great event" that significantly bolstered the North's pre-emptive nuclear attack capability, the official KCNA news agency reported.
