Ukraine government forces recapture separatist stronghold

By Maria Tsvetkova SLAVIANSK, Ukraine (Reuters) - Ukrainian forces routed pro-Russian rebels in a flashpoint area of eastern Ukraine on Saturday and raised the country's blue and yellow flag again over what had for months been the separatist redoubt of Slaviansk. A Reuters reporter saw a convoy of about 20 military transport vehicles and buses filled with armed rebels driving out of Kramatorsk where they had gone after apparently fleeing Slaviansk 20 km (12 miles) to the north. About 100-150 Ukrainian troops patrolled the center of Slaviansk and some soldiers were bringing out weapons and ammunition from one of the administration buildings the rebels had been using as a headquarters. Shooting could be heard from the outskirts of the town which had served as a stronghold for rebel forces command, and one Ukrainian soldier said the city was not yet fully under government control.

Israel has stayed silent on the investigation into the death of an East Jerusalem youth who Palestinians believe was kidnapped and killed by far-right Jews, but the Palestinian attorney-general was reported as saying he had been burned alive. Israeli-Palestinian tensions have risen sharply since three Israeli teens were kidnapped on June 12 and later found dead in the occupied West Bank. This was followed on Wednesday by the kidnapping of Mohammed Abu Khudair, 16, in his neighbourhood in East Jerusalem.

Two militants blow themselves up in southern Saudi Arabia

An Interior Ministry spokesman said the two were part of a group of six al Qaeda militants who attacked the Wadia border post on Friday from Yemen.

Each of the two candidates vying to succeed President Hamid Karzai accuses the other of mass fraud. The Taliban have vowed to disrupt the election process.


Kenya police probe gunfire incident in coastal area

Kenyan police started an investigation after gunfire erupted in the coastal county of Lamu, where 65 people were killed in two attacks last month, officials and the Red Cross said on Sunday. The Kenya National Disaster Operation Centre said on its Twitter feed that the gunfire had been at Hindi trading centre, situated 15 km (9 miles) from the town of Lamu, and close to the town of Mpeketoni, which was nearly destroyed in one of the attacks last month. The Kenya Red Cross said it had dispatched its emergency teams to the area, situated north of the port of Mombasa, adding that the shooting had ceased. "Police (are) investigating the incident," the Red Cross said on its Twitter feed.

JERUSALEM/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States called for speedy investigation of an incident in which it said a U.S. citizen of Palestinian descent appeared to have been badly beaten by Israeli paramilitary police during riots in East Jerusalem this week. A video clip circulated on the internet on Saturday showed two Israeli Border police holding down and repeatedly pummeling a masked youth before carrying him away. The family of Tariq Khdeir, 15, from Tampa, Florida, who was visiting family in East Jerusalem, say he was the target of the punches, although the footage is blurred and the victim cannot be identified as he appears also to be wearing a head covering. He is the cousin of Mohammed Abu-Khdeir, the youth Palestinians believe was abducted and murdered by far-right Israelis on Wednesday.

The fighting in northern Yemen, which has taken on a sectarian tone, is further destabilising a country struggling to overcome a range of problems including a secessionist movement in its south and the nationwide spread of an al Qaeda insurgency. Shi'ite Houthi fighters, officially known as Ansarullah, blamed army units linked to the Sunni Muslim Islah party for breaking the June 23 ceasefire on Friday, when government troops advanced on an area in al-Jouf province, northeast of Sanaa.
