Kerry: critics of Iran deal spinning 'fantasy,' urges approval Posted: 23 Jul 2015 11:07 AM PDT By Patricia Zengerle and Matt Spetalnick WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry on Thursday mounted a furious counterattack against critics of the Iran nuclear deal, telling skeptical lawmakers it would be fantasy to think the United States could simply "bomb away" Tehran's atomic know-how. Testifying before Congress for the first time since world powers reached the landmark accord with Iran last week, America's top diplomat was confronted head-on by Republican accusations that Iranian negotiators had "fleeced" and "bamboozled" him. The vitriolic exchanges on Capitol Hill reflected a hardening of positions as Congress opened a 60-day review of the deal considered crucial to its fate. |
Laws passed, Greece to open bailout talks as recession pushes goals further Posted: 23 Jul 2015 10:58 AM PDT By Angeliki Koutantou and Francesco Guarascio ATHENS/BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Greece's creditors prepared on Thursday for the start of bailout talks in Athens, after lawmakers adopted a second package of reform measures before dawn despite a left wing rebellion that may bring early elections. In a sign of how the goal of coming to grips with the country's debt is swiftly sliding even further away, Greece's most influential think tank predicted a sharp drop back into recession. After another marathon session that ended in the early hours of Thursday, the Greek parliament voted overwhelmingly to approve the second package of reform measures. |
Turkish army returns fire on Islamic State after soldier killed: officials Posted: 23 Jul 2015 01:25 PM PDT By Orhan Coskun and Sylvia Westall ANKARA/BEIRUT (Reuters) - Turkish forces returned fire on Islamic State militants in Syria with tank shells on Thursday after a Turkish soldier was killed and two others were wounded in a cross-border firefight, military and government officials said. The fighting comes days after a suspected suicide bombing by the Islamist radical group in a Turkish border town killed 32 people, many of them students and some of them Kurds, touching off waves of violence in the largely Kurdish southeast. Turkey's NATO allies have long expressed concern about control of the border with Syria, which in parts runs parallel with territory controlled by Islamic State. |
Frontlines of Yemen's war shift in favor of Riyadh Posted: 23 Jul 2015 12:42 PM PDT By Noah Browning and Mohammed Mukhashaf DUBAI/ADEN (Reuters) - The tide of Yemen's messy war has unexpectedly turned, handing a morale boost and possibly decisive military momentum to Gulf Arab-backed forces bent on ending the ascendancy of the Houthis, a powerful militia they see as a puppet of Iran. The loss of the strategic southern port of Aden in the space of just a few days is a spectacular reversal for the Houthis, a once obscure rural group that won national importance last year before gaining the upper hand in a four-month-old civil war. At stake in what happens next is the stability of a country that is a cockpit of rivalry between regional powers Saudi Arabia and Iran, sits on leading international shipping routes and provides a haven for al Qaeda's boldest international wing. |
Ukraine, rebels urged to sign deal extending arms withdrawal Posted: 23 Jul 2015 01:36 PM PDT The leaders of France, Germany, Russia and Ukraine agreed in a telephone call on Thursday that preliminary accords to extend a pull-back of weapons in east Ukraine should be signed quickly, French President Francois Hollande's office said. Ukraine and pro-Russian separatists agreed earlier this week that tanks and smaller weapons systems should also be withdrawn in addition to heavy artillery, as was previously agreed. The leaders of the four countries "want the agreements to be signed as soon as possible", Hollande's office said in a statement following the telephone call lasting over two hours. |
Two killed in new push by Libya's eastern government forces in Benghazi Posted: 23 Jul 2015 04:20 PM PDT Two Libyan soldiers were killed and 10 wounded on Thursday when eastern government forces made a new push against Islamist fighters in the embattled center of Benghazi, medics said. Forces loyal to Libya's internationally recognized government have been fighting Islamist groups in the country's second-largest city for over a year, part of a wider struggle since Muammar Gaddafi was overthrown and killed in 2011. Army forces backed by armed residents have regained some of the territory in the eastern city lost last year, but critics say their use of war planes has heavily damaged Benghazi without gaining much on the ground. |
Boko Haram holds territories in Nigeria's NE: governors Posted: 23 Jul 2015 04:46 PM PDT Boko Haram Islamists are still holding on to some territories in Nigeria's troubled northeast, state governors from the region said on Thursday, after the military claimed a series of major victories against the Islamists. Borno and Yobe governors told a monthly national economic council meeting in Abuja that the rebel group -- whose insurgency has claimed more than 15,000 lives since 2009 -- still controlled five municipalities within their states. "On Boko Haram issues, governors of Yobe and Borno raised the alarm of five local government areas of the two states still being in possession of the insurgents," an official document made available to reporters after the meeting said. |

Top Asian News at 11:30 p.m. GMT Posted: 23 Jul 2015 04:32 PM PDT HONG KONG (AP) — Since China took control of Hong Kong from Britain in 1997, the city's billionaires have played a leading role in hewing the Asian financial center to Beijing's priorities. So too have a dwindling band of fishermen and farmers. The desire of China's communist leaders to enlist the tycoons' cooperation is understandable given the influence they have through their control of large swathes of the semiautonomous Chinese city's economy. Chinese President Xi Jinping last year summoned a group of them for an emergency meeting as political tensions in Hong Kong mounted. |
Illinois seeks USDA disaster declaration due to flooding Posted: 23 Jul 2015 04:23 PM PDT Governor Bruce Rauner of Illinois, a top producer of soybeans and corn, on Thursday formally requested that U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack declare a disaster in counties hit hard by flooding. Illinois had its wettest June on record this year, and July rainfall as of Tuesday totaled 5 to 10 inches (10 to 25 cm) in central areas of the state, roughly double the norm, according to the State Climatologist Office. About 40 percent of the crops in Iroquois County in east-central Illinois, were under water at one time, Illinois Department of Agriculture Director Philip Nelson said. |

U.S. lawmakers seek to change Cuba travel, shipping rules Posted: 23 Jul 2015 03:56 PM PDT By Patricia Zengerle and Matt Spetalnick WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A U.S. Senate committee on Thursday approved amendments that would end restrictions on travel by Americans to Cuba and ease some trade barriers, advancing efforts to implement President Barack Obama's rapprochement with the communist island. By an 18-12 vote, the Republican-controlled Appropriations Committee backed a measure that would ease travel limits, making it the first legislation to pass any congressional committee to facilitate normalization of relations. The committee later passed other amendments, by voice vote without objections, to a Financial Services appropriations bill to allow private financing for U.S. agricultural sales and lift restrictions on ships that call at Cuban ports. |
Montana wildfire rages unchecked for third day in Glacier National Park Posted: 23 Jul 2015 03:55 PM PDT By Emmett Berg KALISPELL, Mont. (Reuters) - Flames roared unchecked through heavy timber for a third day in Montana's Glacier National Park, where the main road has been closed through the eastern half of the park, along with two campgrounds, during its busiest time of year. The first major wildfire to hit Glacier in nearly a decade has charred roughly 4,000 acres (1,600 hectares) since igniting on Tuesday just east of the Continental Divide at Logan Pass, officials said, and has defied firefighters' attempts to contain it. A group of hikers initially feared to have been in harm's way returned safely, and no injuries have been reported, though one historic log cabin was lost, the National Park Service said. |

EU reviews cooperation with Burundi after disputed polls Posted: 23 Jul 2015 02:38 PM PDT The European Union said Thursday it would begin reviewing its cooperation with Burundi in the wake of controversial presidential polls boycotted by the opposition over President Pierre Nkurunziza's refusal to refrain from seeking a third term. Nkurunziza pushed ahead with presidential polls on Tuesday, even though they had been branded as illegitimate by the international community after sparking months of deadly violence that caused tens of thousands to flee the country. Results from the vote are expected Friday, but Nkurunziza is seen as a shoo-in for a third consecutive term -- which the opposition says violates a constitutional two-term limit. |

The EPA is expected to propose regulations later this summer on methane emissions. |
