Austria to revoke measures that let migrants cross from Hungary Posted: 06 Sep 2015 04:55 PM PDT By Michael Shields and Irene Preisinger VIENNA/MUNICH (Reuters) - Austria said on Sunday it planned to end emergency measures that have allowed thousands of refugees stranded in Hungary into Austria and Germany since Saturday morning. Austria had suspended its random border checks after photographs of a Syrian toddler lying dead on a Turkish beach showed Europeans the horror faced by those desperate enough to travel illegally into the heart of Europe, which is deeply divided over how to cope. After 71 people suffocated in the back of a truck abandoned on an Austrian highway en route from Hungary, and as thousands headed from Budapest toward Austria on foot, Vienna had agreed with Germany to waive rules requiring refugees to register an asylum claim in the first EU country they reach. |
Saudi-led coalition jets kill 20 at a wake in Yemen: residents Posted: 06 Sep 2015 01:08 PM PDT By Mohammed Ghobari SANAA (Reuters) - Jets belonging to a Saudi-led coalition killed at least 20 people at a wake in northern Yemen on Sunday, local tribesmen said, as warplanes pounded Houthis and other forces behind a missile strike that had killed dozens of Gulf Arab soldiers. The air strikes targeted troops loyal to former president Ali Abdullah Saleh, an ally of the Houthis, across the country and hit a Houthi base in what had been the al-Imam University, a religious school in northern Sanaa, locals said. In Sanaa, residents said buildings had been leveled as explosions rang through the night and morning before stopping around noon. |
Experts dismiss Mexico's account of apparent student massacre Posted: 06 Sep 2015 04:29 PM PDT By Lizbeth Diaz MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexico's official account of the abduction and apparent massacre of 43 students last year does not add up, a team of international experts said on Sunday, citing deep flaws in the government's investigation and dismissing its claims that the victims were incinerated in a garbage dump. The case provoked a global outcry after the missing students were abducted in the city of Iguala in southwest Mexico on Sept. 26, 2014. The government's failure to capture the killers or even persuade Mexicans that its investigation was serious has hit President Enrique Peña Nieto's reputation, and the report on Sunday was certain to pile more pressure on. |
Kurdish militants claim deadly ambush, Turkish jets retaliate Posted: 06 Sep 2015 01:43 PM PDT By Orhan Coskun and Ece Toksabay ANKARA (Reuters) - Kurdish militants said on Sunday they had killed 15 soldiers in an attack on an army convoy in southeast Turkey, and a security source said the military responded with air strikes. In a statement posted online, the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) said its guerrillas had ambushed the convoy of armored vehicles in Yuksekova district, in what could be the bloodiest assault since the collapse of a ceasefire in July. "An attack from several sides left 15 soldiers dead, and a large number of weapons were seized in the action," the statement read. |

Shanmugam dropped in to a bustling food court to greet voters, listen to their grumbles and urge them to back the People's Action Party (PAP) in this Friday's general election. A bedrock of support from communities like this guarantees that the PAP, which has ruled this city state since it won independence 50 years ago, will be returned to power this week. |

The two sides have been negotiating for four years over the so-called "umbrella agreement" that would protect personal data exchanged between police and judicial authorities in the course of investigations, as well as between companies and law enforcement authorities. |
After G7, Pope and World Cup, Munich takes on refugee crisis Posted: 06 Sep 2015 04:55 PM PDT By Georgina Prodhan and Irene Preisinger MUNICH, Germany (Reuters) - Munich has cranked up a formidable administrative machine to meet a tidal wave of refugees, taking in 18,000 exhausted human souls at its central station and getting most of them to shelter this weekend while still keeping the trains running on time. "It's getting tight," Christoph Hillenbrand, president of the government of Upper Bavaria, told reporters at the station, where almost 11,000 new migrants arrived on Sunday on top of 6,800 who came on Saturday. |

Riot police intervened to disperse the group, Hurriyet said on its website. |

Several suspects have been arrested after the family's home in the West Bank village of Duma was firebombed with Molotov cocktails on July 31, sparking anger among the Palestinian community. "Riham Dawabsha died in the night," a spokeswoman for the Tel Hashomer Hospital in Tel Aviv told AFP, where the 26-year-old teacher was admitted with third-degree burns covering 80 percent of her body. |
Independent probe doubts 43 Mexico students cremated Posted: 06 Sep 2015 04:41 PM PDT Independent foreign investigators tore apart on Sunday the Mexican government's investigation into last year's abduction of 43 students, refuting official conclusions that they were incinerated in a landfill. Urging the authorities to keep looking for the students snatched by corrupt police a year ago, experts from the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights said there was no evidence that they were cremated in a huge bonfire. After a six-month investigation, the panel released a nearly 500-page report that undermines the official account of a crime that sparked protests and the biggest crisis of President Enrique Pena Nieto's administration. |
