U.S. presses case against Russia on downed jet as horror deepens Posted: 20 Jul 2014 01:19 PM PDT By Anton Zverev and Matt Spetalnick HRABOVE Ukraine/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry laid out what he called overwhelming evidence of Russian complicity in the shooting down of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 as international horror deepened over the fate of the victims' remains. Kerry demanded that Moscow take responsibility for actions of pro-Russian rebels in eastern Ukraine whom Washington suspects of downing the jet with a missile, and expressed disgust at their "grotesque" mishandling of the bodies. |
Hamas says Israeli soldier captured; Gaza death toll jumps Posted: 20 Jul 2014 03:30 PM PDT By Nidal al-Mughrabi and Allyn Fisher-Ilan GAZA/JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Hamas's armed wing said on Sunday it had captured an Israeli soldier, as fighting in Gaza led to the bloodiest losses in a nearly two-week military offensive, with some 100 Palestinians and 13 Israeli soldiers killed. The Israeli military said it was checking on the reported capture, which was announced in a Hamas television broadcast. Israeli television stations ignored the report in their extended evening programing about the offensive. "Qassam Brigades captured a Zionist soldier," said Abu Ubaida, the masked spokesman of the Izz el-Deen al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas, who identified the soldier as Shaul Aron and recited what he said was Aron's identity tag number. |
Iran eliminates sensitive stockpile under interim nuclear deal: IAEA Posted: 20 Jul 2014 01:17 PM PDT By Fredrik Dahl VIENNA (Reuters) - Iran has moved to eliminate its most sensitive stockpile of enriched uranium gas under an interim nuclear deal reached with six world powers last year, according to a monthly update by the U.N. nuclear watchdog obtained by Reuters on Sunday. The report by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) showed that Iran had met the terms of the six-month agreement, under which it limited its atomic activities in exchange for some easing of sanctions that are crippling its economy. The preliminary accord had been due to expire on Sunday but will be extended with some adjustments, after Iran and the six powers failed during negotiations in Vienna to meet a self-imposed July 20 deadline for a long-term deal to end the decade-old nuclear standoff and agreed to continue talking. The four-month extension underlines the difficulties negotiators face in settling the dispute permanently even if Iran has met its commitments under the initial agreement, as Sunday's IAEA report suggests. |
UK's new foreign secretary reiterates earlier stance on EU membership Posted: 20 Jul 2014 04:15 PM PDT (Reuters) - Britain's new Foreign Secretary Philip Hammonds reiterated his position from two years ago that if Britain does not get good renegotiation, it should leave the European Union. In an interview with Andrew Marr of the BBC, Hammonds reiterated his earlier stance that if the European Union failed to change and to agree to new terms for Britain's membership, he would rather leave the bloc. |
Mortar fire south of Baghdad kills nine, police, hospital sources say Posted: 20 Jul 2014 12:39 PM PDT Nine people were killed in a mainly Shi'ite town south of Baghdad late on Sunday by mortar fire that hit near a Shi'ite religious site, police and hospital sources said. The sources in the town of Mahmoudiya said eight mortar rounds landed near a "husseiniya," a religious site devoted to Hussein, a martyr in Shi'ite tradition. Two roadside bombs also exploded in the Abu Ghraib area west of Baghdad, killing five Shi'ite volunteer fighters, police and hospital sources said. At least 27 people were killed in a wave of bombings in mostly Shi'ite Muslim areas of Baghdad. |
Colombia's Santos opens 'Congress of peace,' urges deal with rebels Posted: 20 Jul 2014 03:32 PM PDT By Julia Symmes Cobb BOGOTA (Reuters) - Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos opened a new session of Congress on Sunday, calling on lawmakers to back government efforts to strike a peace deal with Marxist rebels to end 50 years of war. "This will be - there's no doubt - the Congress of peace," said Santos, who will be inaugurated for a second four-year term on Aug. 7. "We have a great challenge - an achievable challenge - to end an armed conflict which has bled us for half a century, and build peace." Santos won re-election last month with support for his bid to bring an end to five decades of war with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, that has killed more than 200,000 people and displaced millions. Santos will face fierce opposition in Congress, not least from ex-President Alvaro Uribe, a newly minted senator and leader of the right-wing Democratic Center party. |

Ex-Libyan rebel commander appeals ruling on British torture case Posted: 20 Jul 2014 04:06 PM PDT By Michael Holden LONDON (Reuters) - A former Libyan Islamist commander who says he suffered years of torture by Muammar Gaddafi's henchmen after British and U.S. spies handed him over to Libya will try this week to overturn a ruling blocking legal action against the British government. Abdel Hakim Belhadj, a rebel leader who helped topple Gaddafi in 2011 and is now leader of the Libyan al-Watan Party, says he and his pregnant wife Fatima were abducted by U.S. CIA agents in Thailand in 2004 and then illegally transferred to Tripoli with the help of British spies. Two years ago, he began legal action against former British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw, Britain's MI5 and MI6 spy agencies, a former intelligence chief, and relevant government departments. This week, Belhadj launches an appeal against that decision. |

Kerry strengthens U.S. case against Russia over Malaysia jet downing Posted: 20 Jul 2014 03:47 PM PDT By Matt Spetalnick and Mark Hosenball WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Secretary of State John Kerry on Sunday laid out what he said was overwhelming evidence of Russian complicity in the downing of a Malaysian airliner in eastern Ukraine as he made the U.S. case against Moscow in the most emphatic and explicit terms yet. Delivering his points in a blitz of U.S. morning news shows, Kerry demanded that Russia take responsibility for actions of allied separatists suspected of shooting down the passenger plane and he expressed disgust over the rebels' "grotesque" mishandling of victims' bodies at the crash site. Kerry threatened further sanctions against Moscow and called on European partners, who have lagged behind Washington in imposing penalties over the Ukraine crisis, to take Thursday's plane downing as a "wake-up call" to get tougher with Russia. |
Factbox: U.S. intelligence assessment on Malaysia jet downing Posted: 20 Jul 2014 03:47 PM PDT (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry spelled out on Sunday what he called overwhelming evidence of Russia's complicity in the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 in eastern Ukraine. While stopping short of placing direct blame on Moscow, Kerry put forth the most detailed U.S. accusations so far, based on the latest U.S. intelligence assessments, that Russia provided pro-Moscow insurgents with the sophisticated anti-aircraft systems used to down the plane. Following are the main points in the U.S. intelligence assessment, which was posted on the weekend on the U.S. Embassy website in Kiev: - "Over the past month, we have detected an increasing amount of heavy weaponry to separatist fighters crossing the border from Russia into Ukraine. Last weekend, Russia sent a convoy of military equipment with up to 150 vehicles including tanks, armored personnel carriers, artillery, and multiple rocket launchers to the separatists. |

Exclusive: U.N. Security Council to vote Monday on Ukraine resolution Posted: 20 Jul 2014 03:22 PM PDT By Michelle Nichols UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - The U.N. Security Council is due to vote Monday on a resolution that would condemn the downing of a Malaysian passenger plane in Ukraine and demands that those responsible be held accountable and that armed groups don't compromise the crash site integrity. While Russia engaged in negotiations with the 15-member council on the resolution - drafted by Australia which lost 28 citizens - it was unclear if it would support the final version, said diplomats, speaking on condition of anonymity. In an apparent bid to compromise with Moscow, the wording of the condemnation was change to characterize the incident as the "downing" of the Malaysia Airlines flight - with 298 people on board - instead of "shooting down," according to the final draft obtained by Reuters. Ukraine and its Western allies accuse Moscow of fueling a pro-Russian uprising that threatens to break up the former Soviet republic of 46 million people. |

UN Security Council to hold emergency meeting on Gaza Posted: 20 Jul 2014 03:03 PM PDT The United Nations Security Council will hold an emergency meeting late Sunday on the situation in Gaza, where the Palestinian death toll passed 100 in a single day. Diplomats said the meeting, open to the public and set for 9:30 pm (0130 GMT Monday), was requested by council member Jordan, following a call by Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas. As regional leaders met in Doha for urgent talks on a ceasefire, Abbas said that "what the occupation forces did today in Shejaiya is a crime against humanity," referring to a blistering hours-long Israeli assault near Gaza City that has claimed 62 Palestinian lives and wounded another 250. As the Palestinian death toll soared to 438 in the bloodiest single day in Gaza in five years, a spokesman for the enclave's emergency services said more than a third of the victims were women and children. |
