KCNA file picture shows North Korean leader Kim Jong Un looking at a rocket warhead tip after a simulated test of atmospheric re-entry of a ballistic missileBy Jonathan Landay, David Brunnstrom and Matt Spetalnick WASHINGTON (Reuters) - North Korea has restarted production of plutonium fuel, a senior State Department official said on Tuesday, showing that it plans to pursue its nuclear weapons program in defiance of international sanctions. The U.S. assessment came a day after the U.N. nuclear watchdog said it had "indications" that Pyongyang has reactivated a plant to recover plutonium from spent reactor fuel at Yongbyon, its main nuclear complex. China fighter jet made 'unsafe' intercept of U.S. spy plane: U.S.

Posted: 07 Jun 2016 04:09 PM PDT

A Chinese fighter jet carried out an "unsafe" intercept of a U.S. spy plane in international airspace over the East China Sea, two U.S. defense officials said on Tuesday. In May, the Pentagon said that two Chinese fighter jets flew within 50 feet (15 meters) of a U.S. EP-3 aircraft over the South China Sea. Earlier this week, Secretary of State John Kerry said the United States would consider any Chinese establishment of an air defense zone over the South China Sea to be a "provocative and destabilizing act." U.S. officials have expressed concern that an international court ruling expected in coming weeks on a case brought by the Philippines against China over its South China Sea claims could prompt Beijing to declare an air defense identification zone, or ADIZ, as it did over the East China Sea in 2013.
