Mental illness isn't the only cause – social factors like loneliness, financial ruin and shame can be triggers Posted: 28 May 2020 05:16 AM PDT  The U.S. suicide rate has been increasing for decades. In 1999, the rate was about 10 suicides per 100,000 people. In 2017, the most recent year for which complete statistics are available, it was just over 14 per 100,000 – a rise of 40% in only 18 years. And the problem is not evenly distributed across the country. The increase has been especially severe in rural areas, some of which have seen their suicide rates jump by over 30% in just the past decade. That rates can change from one decade to another, and vary so much across regions, suggests that suicide is shaped by social conditions. Perhaps the most obvious of these is access to mental health services – psychiatrists, therapists and prescription antidepressants. Indeed, the most conventional way of talking about suicide in the modern world is in terms of mental health. This view is not incorrect: Clinical depression increases the risk of suicide, and so therapies that treat depression can help prevent it. But as a sociologist who studies suicide, I think the medical model of suicide is incomplete. My research shows there are additional causes. Suicide in response to an eventNot all who kill themselves do so after a long struggle with depression – from Cato to Hitler, many famous figures of history have taken their own lives after sudden reversals, such as military defeats. Those who already suffer depression can be pushed over the edge by "the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune." It is likely no coincidence that poet Sylvia Plath, with her long history of depression, killed herself shortly after being abandoned by her husband. The human mind does not exist in a vacuum. Thanks to the current pandemic, the National Suicide Prevention Hotline is reporting a nine-fold increase in calls compared to this time last year. Financial causesLoss of material wealth – reduced income, mounting debts and other financial disasters – can certainly provoke suicide. Numerous studies document that the unemployed have higher suicide rates than the employed. Others show that rates rise during economic downturns. Suicide rates spiked during the Great Depression of the 1930s and were more prevalent in areas where banks folded, taking their customers' savings with them. Suicide rates – in the U.S. and many other countries – also rose during the Great Recession of 2008. Some argue, in many parts of the U.S., the recession never ended, which may help explain the rise in rural suicide. South Dakota farmer Chris Dykshorn texted, "I seriously don't know how we r gonna make it. I am failing and feel like I'm gonna lose everything I've worked for," before killing himself in 2019. His case is hardly unique. Along with high rates of suicide go high rates of drug overdose. It's sometimes hard to distinguish an intentional overdose from an accidental one, and some researchers lump them together as "deaths of despair." ShameReputation and good name are extremely important to most people, so all manner of shame and humiliation can cause suicide. For instance, in South Korea, a former president killed himself after a corruption investigation in 2009. In 2017, a Kentucky state legislator killed himself after allegations of sexual misconduct. Gossip and scandal are powerful sanctions in small towns and villages. The growth of social media has made people vulnerable to public shaming on a mass scale. Not surprisingly, social media shaming also provokes suicide. Broken relationshipsIn addition to the loss of stature, people also might kill themselves over the loss of social ties. Sociologists have known for over a century that people with more and stronger social connections have lower rates of suicide. Marriage, parenthood and other sources of social integration provide a protective effect. Suicide victims are more likely than others to live alone, tend to have fewer friends and are less involved in organizations. America's long-term decline in civic and religious organizations – or even voluntary groups such as bowling leagues – likely exacerbates other issues that might encourage suicide.If lacking social ties is bad, the sudden shock of losing them is worse. Breakups and divorces are a common reason for suicide: One study of over 400,000 Americans found that being divorced more than doubled the risk of suicide. The same is true in other countries, and the risk is greatest immediately after the loss. StrifePeople also kill themselves in reaction to social conflict. Depending on the nature of the conflict, suicide might be a kind of protest, punishment or escape. Hundreds of Tibetans, for instance, have burned themselves in protest of Chinese rule. In places such as rural Iran and Afghanistan, large numbers of women burn themselves to protest and escape from domestic abuse. In modern America, people sometimes kill themselves to inflict guilt on someone who has hurt them. In other cases, suicide can be a response to bullying and abuse by one or more people. Rethinking suicide preventionThese realities suggest that suicide prevention involves much more than increasing the availability of therapists and prescriptions. It requires providing economic development and financial assistance to those in distress. People can help by strengthening communities and building social ties. Additionally, they can provide moral support, alternative means of conflict resolution and escape routes from abusive relationships. | Outrage in Iran over gruesome 'honour killing' of teenage girl Posted: 28 May 2020 05:03 AM PDT  Iran's president has called for so-called honour killings to be outlawed following the gruesome murder of a teenage girl, allegedly by her father, for running away from home with an older man. Romina Ashrafi, 14, was allegedly beheaded by her father as punishment for fleeing her home in Talesh, near Tehran, with a 29-year-old man. The couple were detained and Romina was handed back to her family as her father appeared to have forgiven her, according to the state news agency IRNA. But on May 21, the girl's father attacked her while she was sleeping and cut off her head with a sickle, according to a local news website called Gilkhabar. The father has since been arrested, as well as the man Romina eloped with according to local media reports. Under Iranian law, young girls can marry from 13 although most women get married in their early 20s according to the Associated Press. If convicted, the girl's father would face a prison sentence of ten years. Iran's penal code currently reduces the penalties for fathers, or other family members, who carry out honour killings on their relatives. Romina's death has shocked Iran and prompted Hassan Rouhani, the president, to order his Cabinet to speed up legislation against so-called honour killings.

The Minneapolis unrest ravaged several blocks in the Longfellow neighborhood, with scattered rioting reaching for miles across the city. It was the second consecutive night of violent protests following Floyd's death, which was seen in a video that showed him gasping for breath while an officer kneeled on his neck for almost eight minutes.

Sergei Sobyanin, the Moscow mayor, announced something that could be a cause for celebration on Wednesday, telling Vladimir Putin, the president, in a televised conference call that the Russian capital was poised to begin lifting some of the lockdown restrictions. The number of new Covid-19 cases recorded in Moscow on Thursday, was just over 2,000, the lowest in five weeks, and the number of hospitalisations dropped by 40 per cent in a fortnight, according to the mayor. Most of Moscow's shops and parks will re-open on Monday, and walks and outdoor exercises will finally be allowed but with a caveat. The details of what the City Hall dubbed an "experiment" have angered even the mayor's supporters who have credited him for stemming the outbreak. Each apartment building will be assigned three days a week when residents will be allowed to venture outside but only between 9 am and 9 pm, exercising will be permitted only before 9 am, and face masks will be mandatory.

| Iran outraged by 'honour killing' of 14-year-old girl Romina Ashrafi Posted: 28 May 2020 03:36 AM PDT  The killing of an Iranian teen by her father after she eloped with an older man sparked outrage on Wednesday, with local media denouncing "institutionalised violence" in "patriarchal" Iran. Iranian media covered the apparent "honour" crime extensively, with Ebtekar newspaper leading its front page with the headline "Unsafe father's house". According to local media, Romina Ashrafi was killed in her sleep on May 21 by her father, who decapitated her in the family home in Talesh in northern Gilan province. The reports said her father had refused her permission to marry a man fifteen years her senior, spurring her to run away, but she was returned home after her father reported her. The legal marriage age in Iran is 13 for women. Iranian media reported that after authorities detained the teenager, she told a judge she feared for her life if she was returned to home. But what most outraged public opinion was the lenient punishment the father is likely to face, Ebtekar wrote. The newspaper notes that Iran's normal "eye for an eye" retributive justice does not apply to fathers who kill their children. Accordingly, he is likely to face three to 10 years in prison, a sentence that could be reduced further, the newspaper wrote, denouncing the "institutionalised violence" of Iran's "patriarchal culture". With the farsi hashtag Romina_Ashrafi focusing outrage on Twitter, President Hassan Rouhani "expressed his regrets" in a cabinet meeting on Wednesday, pleading for the speedy passing of several anti-violence bills, his office said. On Twitter, Vice President for Women and Family Affairs, Masoumeh Ebtekar, said a bill on the protection of young people was in the "final phase" of validation by Iran's Guardian Council. The council, which vets legislation to ensure compliance with Iran's constitution and Islamic sharia law, has thrice previously called for changes to the law after it was passed by lawmakers, Ebtekar newspaper wrote. The publication fears that if the council sends back the bill, it will be buried by Iran's new parliament, which held its first session Wednesday and is dominated by conservatives and hardliners opposed to Rouhani.

| Trump stumbles toward a big blunder in Afghanistan Posted: 28 May 2020 02:35 AM PDT  President Trump reportedly wants to bring all U.S. soldiers home from Afghanistan by Election Day so that he can brag on the campaign trail about fulfilling his promise to "end endless wars." But if he doesn't do it right, the withdrawal from Afghanistan will blow up in his face, setting back broad-based efforts to change the course of American foreign policy.It's understandable that the president would take the position he has on Afghanistan. From North Korea to China, Iran, Syria, Venezuela, and beyond, Trump's foreign policy has been a chaotic, incoherent mess. He campaigned against using the American military to undertake interminable exercises in nation-building and counter-insurgency. Yet nearly four years into his presidency, American troops remain in Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Trump would like nothing more than to be able to campaign on having finally brought the longest war in American history to an end.The problem is that a peace agreement reached with the Taliban on Feb. 29 set a timetable of more than a year for American troop withdrawal, with projected dates contingent on the Taliban meeting certain conditions. If the U.S. abandons that timetable and disregards those conditions, the Taliban will almost certainly treat it as an indication they can abandon the peace agreement the moment American troops depart. This implies it would be better to hold off on withdrawing from the country until after the election in November — which is clearly the consensus position inside the Pentagon and within Washington's foreign policy establishment.But this presumes that the peace agreement with the Taliban will survive our departure if it comes in 2021 instead of in 2020. It won't. Whether American troops leave in the next few months, next year, or later this decade, the Taliban are bound to make a strong push to take over Afghanistan once we're gone — and they are very likely to succeed. The question then becomes whether this is an outcome we are willing to accept. If it is, it probably makes more sense to leave sooner rather than later — but only if Trump is willing and able to prepare the American people to accept this eventuality.That is the challenge that confronts us. We either need to be willing to see Afghanistan fall to the Taliban — or be willing to keep troops in the country indefinitely. The latter option is the tripwire tactic that the U.S. first deployed after World War II, when we extended security guarantees to Western Europe, letting the Soviet Union know that any attempt to push the Iron Curtain further westward would trigger an American military response. We did the same thing a few years later with the armistice agreement between North and South Korea. Sixty-seven years later, the American tripwire (backed up by American troops) is still there in the Demilitarized Zone separating the two countries.Today the U.S. has multiple tripwires in the Middle East, an informal but potentially momentous one in place between China and Taiwan, and a series of them under NATO auspices separating Russia from Eastern Europe. And then of course there's the one that's been in place in Afghanistan since we deposed the Taliban in late 2001, preventing their insurgency against American-backed successor governments from prevailing.The tripwire tactic isn't designed to achieve a defined military goal — like the taking of territory from a foe or the decisive defeat of a foreign army — that is followed by victory, the completion of the mission, and the withdrawal of troops. Instead, we provide security guarantees to project American power across the globe, taking on responsibility for the preservation of order, stability, and peace in countries or regions thousands of miles from the American homeland. And this responsibility is almost never withdrawn — because to withdraw is to relinquish control, and to relinquish control is to risk the re-emergence of disorder, instability, and war, all of which would supposedly look like evidence of American fecklessness.A foreign policy founded on military tripwires is one with no possibility of winning and the ever-present likelihood of losing. That's why the Pentagon is so reluctant to endorse withdrawal in Afghanistan — because as costly as a nearly two-decades-long mission in a country 7,000 miles away might be, it's better than that nearly two-decades-long mission culminating in the very thing the mission was intended to prevent. A slow, controlled bleed is much preferable to having to accept the blame when the whole thing goes south after we leave.This is the dynamic Trump is pushing back against in trying to withdraw American troops from Afghanistan. The only way for him, his party, and those who favor withdrawal to avoid a massive (and perfectly predictable) round of blowback once the Taliban (in all likelihood) return to power is for him and his administration's surrogates to acknowledge this probable outcome and own it ahead of time, along with its broader implications.What are those implications? That the U.S. has defined its interests too broadly since the end of the Cold War, if not before. That American security isn't assured or advanced by attempting to exert direct control over far-flung regions of the world. That attempting to do so is a form of light-footprint imperialism that drains American resources while giving our opponents an object of resentment that serves as a powerful catalyst for recruitment. That the political fate of Afghanistan is not a matter of pressing concern to the United States. That terrorist threats can arise in any country of the world, and that if such a renewed threat emerges in Afghanistan after our departure, we will deal with it swiftly and decisively, but without a renewed long-term military presence on the ground.Though its critics are bound to denigrate such a shift in priorities as "isolationism," it need be nothing of the sort. The U.S. has the world's largest military in the world by far, along with roughly 800 bases in more than 80 countries and territories. (That's 90-95 percent of the world's extraterritorial military outposts.) We have historical ties and treaty obligations to NATO as well as long-standing interests in our own hemisphere. We face abundant opportunities and threats in Asia. Reassessing our priorities and selectively pulling back from some of our more costly security guarantees is not an act of withdrawal from the world or evidence of weakness. It's a realistic response to the wider world — a world with which we cannot help but to be actively engaged.But this modest and defensible shift in priorities can only be accomplished if Trump undertakes the crucially important intermediary step of explaining the underlying rationale to American voters. Declaring that it's "time to bring our people home" and pinning hopes for a happy outcome on the Taliban playing nice in perpetuity isn't going to cut it. However, British Columbia's Superior Court Associate Chief Justice Heather Holmes ruled, "Ms. Meng's approach ... would seriously limit Canada's ability to fulfill its international obligations in the extradition context for fraud and other economic crimes."Why It Matters Meng is the daughter of Huawei's founder, Chinese billionaire, Ren Zheng.
